They don't really have anyone for him to compete with, and the certainly aren't going to spend the money to get anybody else.

So IF, and it is a big if, Bret's comes back, Dana already said he'd be back at 3B. So then why don't we move Paredes or Altuve to SS and let pena figure some **** out in the battters box? I get there would be a drop off from a defensive stand point, but Alice's bat is miles ahead of JP3

This whole "I'm the closer" thing is dumb. The most valuable guy is the one who comes in the most pressure and high leverage situation not necessarily the one who pitches the 9th up 3 runs.
I get it. Saves get you a bigger contract. But it's dumb.

Yeah very weird to need "the title"
Go in there and throw around 30 pitches. That's your title

Dude wants to get paid again with another contract, so I suspect being the Closer increases his potential free agent market, assuming he performs well. And that latter part is really all that matters IMHO, but all else being equal I think he feels being a closer again would help his chances at a better contract

Dude should realize there is ZERO chance he gets another contact. Title or not. No one is giving a 37 year old closer a fat contract

At this point I don't really want Bregman back. We gave him a more than fair offer but he decided to chase the bag instead. I'm really excited for Paredes and the (soft?) rebuild.
Thanks for the memories and the salsa Breggy, but I think it's better if we both went our separate ways.

You don't want the team to be better because you got your feelings hurt he wanted as much money as he could get?
I don't fully believe that. They may have been open to the idea depending on the return, but I don't think they were fully all in on wanting to trade him. If so I would think they would've been more aggressive with adding a RP during the offseason.Farmer1906 said:
The plan was to trade Pressly regardless of Bregman.
