They don't really have anyone for him to compete with, and the certainly aren't going to spend the money to get anybody else.

Yeah I don't see why the Cubs would say no to that.

It's a short term deal (1 year) for a good reliever (better than their alternative options) and fairly cheap, that has a stellar playoff record of experience.

Not sure how they "enforce" this into the trade though...like if Pressly starts out as their closer and has a 5.00+ ERA going into June, are they somehow beholden to maintain him as the closer? Just seems like that's not practical and Pressly is just going to have to take their word for it...

This whole "I'm the closer" thing is dumb. The most valuable guy is the one who comes in the most pressure and high leverage situation not necessarily the one who pitches the 9th up 3 runs.

I get it. Saves get you a bigger contract. But it's dumb.

It's more about routine and how he's been used to preparing over the years at this point.

So IF, and it is a big if, Bret's comes back, Dana already said he'd be back at 3B. So then why don't we move Paredes or Altuve to SS and let pena figure some **** out in the battters box? I get there would be a drop off from a defensive stand point, but Alice's bat is miles ahead of JP3
No matter what!
Epstein didn't do, you know, the thing...
I'm the rare Astros/Cowboys/Spurs fan. We do exist

You really want Altuve at SS?

And Peña's bat is just fine when he's giving you gold glove defense.

I'd have a better chance of throwing guys out from SS than Altuve, and I'm staring down 50.

I love Altuve, but at SS, just no.

At this point I don't really want Bregman back. We gave him a more than fair offer but he decided to chase the bag instead. I'm really excited for Paredes and the (soft?) rebuild.

Thanks for the memories and the salsa Breggy, but I think it's better if we both went our separate ways.

Yeah very weird to need "the title"

Go in there and throw around 30 pitches. That's your title

Dude wants to get paid again with another contract, so I suspect being the Closer increases his potential free agent market, assuming he performs well. And that latter part is really all that matters IMHO, but all else being equal I think he feels being a closer again would help his chances at a better contract

I think it's more about him not wanting to uproot his family for a lateral move. He probably wants to know that he's gonna be closing if he's gonna go to so this trouble. This is just a guess, so who knows

You guys are surprised some of the most competitive men on the planet have egos? It's not just ego and title, it's money. I understand wanting the guys you root for to take it for the team, but for relievers, the closer role is quite literally multiples better for salary.

When Hader got here, he essentially said he needed to be the 9th inning guy. Used the whole routine argument too.

Hader got what he wanted because Jim paid way too much for him.

Six letters could make you 10M-15M more per year. You willing to leave that on the table?

Dude should realize there is ZERO chance he gets another contact. Title or not. No one is giving a 37 year old closer a fat contract

Never said it would be fat, but he wants it to be as fat as it can be even if it's short term

You don't want the team to be better because you got your feelings hurt he wanted as much money as he could get?

I personally don't want Bregman back either. Him back means we've lost a high leverage reliever in Press which means an already thin bullpen is thinner, and means we've spent more money and still haven't addressed adding another OF. Also means VC, Dubon, someone else will be traded as well to thin payroll.

The plan was to trade Pressly regardless of Bregman.

If someone has said on haloween:

Astros are going to resign Bregman, trade Tucker for Parades & a good prospect, and sign Walker

Who in their right mind would say "good, except the Bregman part" ?

I don't fully believe that. They may have been open to the idea depending on the return, but I don't think they were fully all in on wanting to trade him. If so I would think they would've been more aggressive with adding a RP during the offseason.

Our resident insider brought up the idea of him being traded a long time ago. They've been shopping him all off season
