I think the play here is to ball out this year and opt out and hit the market next year.

I'm glad Crane doesn't accommodate these opt out deals.
Balling out and having a record year when pairing back up with Cora is gonna be suspect
An MVP-type season, maybe, but that won't happen. Alex hits better at Fenway than anywhere else.

He wanted to play in Boston. He's really close to Cora.

He never ruled Houston out but at the end of the day Boston was where he decided to go.

Boston, Houston and Chicago were his three preferred destinations in that order from what I understand.
Also -- look at this way:

He's already won two rings. He's reached the pinnacle in Houston. He knew what he would get with the Astros.

When he was growing up in a town without a close MLB team, he probably dreamed of playing for an historic baseball club like the Sox, Yankees, Cubs, Cards or Dodgers. Those clubs have long, storied histories, nostalgia and over the years -- players that were icons.

He has the rings. Now -- he can chase the money and enjoy the experience of one of the historical clubs. I know if I were in his position, I'd like to see what playing for those clubs was all about.

You're spot on with this. That's a big reason why Chicago and Boston were two of the three finalists.

Arenado's bat is awful. He's washed.

Just knowing how committed Bregs is to working hard and knowing all aspects of the game, it doesn't surprise me that Boston was his choice.

We talk here about baseball trips and stadiums we all want to visit. Boston and Wrigley come up regularly as favorites. Imagine getting to play in Fenway half of your season -- and the feeling of all the history there.

Bregman was supposed to "ball out" last year so he could get a mega-contract this year

Arenado had the best year of his career 2022. All-Star 2023. Still elite with the glove.

Put him in a better park on a squad that wants to win- he could be primed for a bounce-back.

I think he makes our team better.

This is what happens when Jim Crane hit Altuve with his car instead of Bregman, causing Bregman to never take Julia Morales to the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance.

Is there a realistic time to expect Cam to be called up this season?

Between YED, Zach, and (eventually) Cam we're gonna have some trees in this lineup. Throw in Isaac and Christian, and i think this lineup may surprise some folks.

A couple of dorks boo Bregman while vast majority give him the standing ovation he deserves.

He definitely deserves and, like I do for Springer, I'll always pull for him individually. Still one of my favorite players in the game today, but I do think we did the right thing in not paying what Boston did. They clearly overpaid. Good luck to him, though. He's a great guy and one we'll never forget during his time as an Astro.

Agreed, and, 2015 makes it sound like them taking montero is a requirement, so, that offsets his salary nicely, combined with colorado picking up 4million each of the next 3 years, and 6 million of each deferred 15 years, really brings down his cost. in the december deal he blocked, supposedly the cards were going to also kick in 15-20 million

wonder what the original deal was last fall, was it straight up montero for arenado?

Going to be interesting to see how much he enjoys all that "history and nostalgia" raining down on him from Boston fans when he pops up to the infield while hitting .205 at the end of May on a $40M/ year contract.

Come on Dana. Work a trade for an outfielder. Getting someone like Donovan, I'd grade this offseason as an A. Otherwise a B- for leaving us with one of the worst (if not THE worst) OF in MLB.

And potentially the best IF. Maybe i'm just drinking the kool-aid, but i'm optimistic about guys like Chas and Jeremy taking a step forward, and we won last year with a similar OF for half the season without Kyle.

I read their message board last night in a couple of places. Most of them were excited to get him on a short deal. There were a few "I hate that guy, but I guess "comments. Since it's not their money, I'm sure they are happy to get him on a shorter deal than a bloated one.

If the Astros were overpaying for a guy on a short deal who historically absolutely mashes at MMP / Daikin / whatever, I'm sure most of us would be happy.

Reasonable I guess. Also realistic for a big market club, where overpaying for one guy for a few years doesn't necessarily hamstring you for future acquisitions.

As always, appreciate your shared insight on this board.

Two questions:

1) You keep mentioning Arenado (which I like) but didn't he already block a trade with us? Why would that change?

2) Anything new on Luis Robert II? Can't help but feel like this team looks massively different with him in CF.

The Red Sox just made an absolutely awful deal. Lol.

Good, we continue to move on.
Not necessarily. They're only committing $40M year by year. If he continues to decline he'll be back on the market after next year and really wishing he had that 6 or even 5 year deal he was offered. If he performs and it works for them, they keep it going.

Opt outs and some deferred money are the only way to justify big contracts like that.

I'm glad we didn't do it, but I don't hate it as a deal overall for them.

I am not sure you're understanding how his contract works. If he has a crappy year, he isn't going back out on the open market. He will stay with the Red Sox. Bregman can opt out, the Red Sox cant.

I dont see a chance in hell Alexs Opts out at ANY point of this contract. To be 1 of 5 dudes in baseball making an AAV of 40+ million is absolutely mind boggling to me.......
