Paredes is still only 26, right? Probably hasn't had the opportunity to grow or develop those intangible skills that Bregman has. I'm not saying he will just that it's too soon to tell.

I don't think baseball needs to have a salary cap compared to other spots, but ignoring challenges of collective bargaining for the moment, one thing that would immediately make baseball better would be if there max deals like the NBA - not necessarily in AAV, but in length.

Make it where at any given time, a player is eligible for a five year contract. Make it wear teams compete by throwing crazy salaries at guys if they so wish, but take away stupid 10 and 13 year contacts. And if a team and player want to renegotiate or extend said deal each year to push out further, they can. But at no time can you be under contract for more than 5 years out.

The length is what scares smart teams off more than the money. And the teams that do sign them always end up with albatrosses where the player is loathed by fans late in their careers.

Imagine how much different the offseason would look if Soto, Burnes, Bregman, Alonso, etc. were all eligible for five year max contracts and were simply competing to see who would offer the highest salary. The Mets could see if anyone would top a 5 year/$255 deal for Soto.

Honestly, I bet the players would end up happier in the long-run as well. They could still make a ton of money, but neither side is pinned down in a bad relationship for a decade.
All I do is Nguyen

This whole situation has to hurt Boras' reputation. Last offseason two of his clients had to wait a long time to sign albeit for fairly good offers but the market isn't showing that for Bergman.
No matter what!

Yep. Players need to realize that the market is a fickle beast. This is a major league with only a small number of teams in the running. It's very risky to just chase money while dicking around the team that gave you the original opportunity (and had a very good competitive deal on the table....for what? One more year?)

Don't feel bad for Bregman, he got paid generational money already. He was just trying to squeeze out every last dime and potentially hurt our moves this offseason. We had to move on.

I think they shouldn't have been surprised since you said not only did the Astros make one public offer, but came back with an improved offer.

They miscalculated with the Astros and have played everything else since then terribly. He's known Crane for years and for some reason thought he could bluff Crane or change his mind.

My opinion is he needs to sober up, face the reality of the situation, and accept the best offer from the best situation soon because I think it's going to get worse the longer he lets this draw out.

I honestly think he's getting something like 3/80-90, 4/110-120, or 5/125-150 contract at this point, which the 4 year deal being more likely.

They might have banked on more fan pressure to
resign Bregman. I think the leak of the 6/156 really dowsed any fan pressure as most everyone thinks that is a really fair deal.

If Altuve played in NY they wouldn't be debating whether he's a HOFer. The debate would be is he the best second baseman of all time.

In the modern era it's a good argument. Since expansion it's a no brained. But over all? Hornsby and LaJoie were pretty decent in their era.

One of the things about Jose is he's made the absolute most of the glut of okay off games he's played in. There is also a good argument that he has been the greatest all around postseason performer of all time.

I'd love if Crane did this:

I regularly tell Space City Sports on their social media channels that if they offered direct streaming, I and so many others would be happy to pay even upwards of $20 a month to get their channel directly. They could make so much more than what they get off their local sports fees to cable companies.

I worked in the RSN industry for most of my career. Streaming is still a net negative for most RSN unless it is priced significantly higher. Rangers are doing as a consequence of the Bally bankruptcy proceedings. Space City has one revenue advantage on the cable/satellite distribution side that virtually no other RSn has, though it will run its course several years down the line. Once that happens I would expect them to explore a streaming option, but for now the status quo is really more lucrative
can you explain on the idea that streaming is a net negative? i don't understand how adding a revenue stream decreases revenue for the astros

His numbers are fairly comparable to Jeter's. Altuve has more pop and is better league-adjusted, but the raw slash line is similar.

I play a thinking game with my brother some time - which great player from our lifetime would have been elevated to the highest God status if he had played in New York or Boston?

Biggio would have been Jeter - never day die, always getting dirty, almost never hurt, constantly giving to kids, etc.

Our #1 answer is usually Tony Gwynn. San Diego made the playoffs - maybe twice in his career? So he was almost never on national TV. He would have been as second Dimaggio - pure hitter. 19 straight years hitting at least .309.

Sure.

Not what about the other impacts of the majority of your fanbase not being able to watch their team. I imagine that ultimately hurts support and ticket sales not to mention merchandise. Add in it severely limits adding any new fans and that seems like a an unwise big picture decision.

Just about every industry has instances where you have to take a small loss in some places to make more in others. And in this day and age if they don't understand the impact of limited exposure, then I guess their decision makes a lot more sense.

I find it interesting we want our players to play with a chip on their shoulder and push the envelope of confidence vs arrogance, but somehow expect them to approach their pay differently.

I think it's hilarious that Manfraud thought limiting bonuses would somehow help small markets. Since the money is the same regardless of team, all it did was make it so that Japanese players will pick whoever the best west coast team is and allow them to do it for well below market value (as if they needed the help). Complete idiot.

Gonna need a new commish with half a brain to negotiate the next CBA.

Still think international players should be subject to the draft if they want to come play in the league personally.

I'm all for this move. But it has to mean they continue to make moves and start the rebuild so we're competitive in 2026 / 2027 instead of just comparable stop gaps. I get the feeling they plan to sit on their hands at this point and use the good will from the last 8 years to make money this year instead of trying to win.

That's a little disappointing and makes it harder to justify not bringing back fan favorites if it wasn't to start the rebuild.

Probably the right answer. Hard to say a 20 season, 15-time All-Star, seven time Silver Slugger, five Gold Glove winner, eight batting titles player is underrated, but I think you're exactly right regarding national notoriety.

I usually throw out Kirby Puckett.

I dunno WTF you're talking about. Many sites have the Astros in the top 7 as World series favorites, and most if not all have them predicted to win the division. Not sure where you're getting they aren't trying to win this year????

Check those numbers. He's got a decent case for the HOF.
