Based on last year, I'm not sure we do.

I think we're getting some recency bias (for once) aided by playing in a really weak division. We know the farm system is depleted. We know we're heading for a FA cliff. We got the ball rolling by moving Tuck. It's normal for teams that had sustained success to try and hold on to it a little too long and delay the needed rebuild.

Let's go all the way and move this from we might have a chance the next 2 years to having a chance at another half decade or longer run in a couple years.

This team was never, ever, ever going to pay Tucker money. Ever. And they probably shouldn't. Not giving out those kinds of contracts is a big reason this team has stayed competitive for so long. The Tucker trade was a master stroke, and exactly the kind of move you make to keep kicking the window open longer.

It kind of baffles me that some still can't see that.

MLB network folks really really want the astros to trade Parades if Alex resigns for a legit LH OF hitter. I think we need Parades, but who knows.

Championship windows are few and far between. If you think you have a shot, you go for it.

They thought that last year. And we weren't' close.

Do you believe we're a better team this year as things stand today?

The way I see it we're probably stronger with starting pitching, weaker in the bullpen, and subpar offensively.

We had 2 bad games against a hot team last year. It happens. Go ask the Dodgers.

Take a real good look at this pitching staff and tell me it's time for a fire sale. If everyone comes back healthy we will be 8 deep in studs. Add to that a lineup that's still projected in the top 5 in OPS.

This is still a legitimate contender.

I think too many are thinking of the Bregman deal in a vacuum. is he worth 6/156? Maybe. Maybe not. Paying 30 years old 5+ years is usually a bad idea. I think we'r heading to a very large cliff after 2027.

The following will be free agents after '27 (a few after '26)
  • Walker
  • McCullers (26)
  • Abreu (26)
  • McCormick (26)
  • Garcia (26)
  • Paredes
  • Pena
  • Meyers

Altuve will be 38 & Yordan/Diaz/Brown will be on their walk year. If I am running the show, I go all in on the next 3 seasons then unload Yordan/Diaz/Brown to usher in a new crop of minor leaguers.
Biggest reason I hope we pass on Bregman and if we're going to spend money, we do it to acquire young players with potential and start the rebuild now.
I love bregman, but tend to agree

we are in danger of trying to limp along and recapture glory that has left the building instead of an actual rebuild.

This also goes to why it was dumb to jump the gun and trade Tucker, would rather had given it one more run at a title
yes, having Tucker in the lineup would've been nice. However, it was basically a foregone conclusion we wouldn't resign him so they were basically forced to trade him to at least get something for him instead of nothing. Not to mention at the time everyone thought Bregman would've signed with another team.
but I would trade letting him walk and one more title run over the prospect and peredes all day

If you can make the playoffs you have a shot at the title.

They underachieved for a big chunk of the regular season and lost to the hottest team in baseball in the playoffs. It happens.

This team certainly isn't the juggernaut team we got used to seeing but they're a good team that can win a title.

And we certainly don't have a below average offense. We were among the best in the league last year.

Why?

I actually think we should get real weird and move Bregman to 2B, Parades to 3B, and Altuve to LF.
Bregman won the gold glove at 3B last year. Why would you swap his gold glove defense for Paredes?

I was halfway tongue in cheek, but I think Bregman is a plus defender who might be able to handle 2B better than Parades. Paredes range is somewhat limited and is a better natural fit in a corner.

If Bregman is a 9/10 at 3B and a 7/10 at 2B & Paredes is a 6/10 at 3B and a 3/10 at 2B then 13>12.
Depends on what happened in 2024. In 2023 Paredes was basically average at 3B per statcast with his arm and range (slightly better with range than arm). Both took a dip last year.

It's a valid opinion. I strongly disagree with it, but it's not an absurd view. I look at it as this team scuffled all year and was a quick out in the playoffs. The roster would not have been better this year, so we would basically be running it back with the same cast (perhaps less Pressly, and certainly less Verlander). I think we can state with a straight face that it would be the same team, at best, from a potential aspect. I don't consider that good enough to let Tucker walk as Correa, Springer, and Cole did.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

I randomly thought of this option last night but opted not to post. It would make for a weird "3-team trade" type situation but could be feasible. Would be curious what the market for him might be and what we could expect for a return.

Agreed What an idiotic move to make for sure. You gave up an mvp candidate for him. You don't move him.
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

It's an opinion. Feel free to spell out how you see it.

I can see where the bullpen could be good enough as we should have starters that will have to move back to the bullpen once the rotation is set (IF everyone we expect to be healthy is).

Our offense was a let down last year. That's just reality. And as we stand today it isn't better on paper. We don't have a single outfielder we expect to be a top 4 or 5 hitter on a good team.

I think the only reason to do it is if it nets you a quality OFer and you get to keep Cam.

Otherwise, yeah, don't do anything.

He had a stellar relief outing in the 2017 ALCS with his flurry of breaking balls. I don't hate this idea

Last year we were top 10 in the MLB in the following categories: home runs(#10), batting avg (#2), OBP(#7), OPS (#8), SLG (#8). While we weren't excellent they were still good. AND that is with Tucker missing most of the season. The home run/power totals should go up with the addition of Walker and Paredes

I'd say our offense IS better on paper this year. You add Parades, and Walker and possibly keep Bregman.

Thats a pretty potent top 6 in the batting lineup, in no particular order:

Altuve
Bregman
Yordan
Walker
Diaz
Paredes

I do agree they need another OF bat, and I'd be willing to bet if the team is doing well come summer time Crane will go out and make a trade for one if it isn't addressed prior.

The reality is the offense was good.

5th in the AL in runs, 3rd in wRC+, lowest K%, Highest BA, & 5th in HRs. NY and BAL were better. No one else in the AL was.

Would I like a better offensive OF? Sure, but it doesn't matter which positions produce as long as they produce.

If we get Bregman the offense is better, potentially a lot better with Peredes and Walker which add a lot of pop we were missing

Why do I feel the urge to defend the Astros offense? It's like I've been dropped into the hellish landscape of an alternate universe named Cintronia.

Can we get back to trashing Boras, lamenting LMJ's slow recovery (again^10), or wondering if McCormick has started swinging at sliders yet?

The main issue with the offense last year was with RISP. Especially when we were trailing in a game.

110 wRC+ with RISP. 7th in the AL.

Could be better, but not some major flaw. We're spoiled because we are usually near the tip-top of the league.
