I'm probably in the minority, but I'd rather trade for Arenado and have him on the books for only three years than sign Bregman for five or six at a much higher AAV. Of course, what we'd lose to St Louis could impact that. Option three of doing neither of those still exists, too.

And what's Caratini's status? No one needs a catcher? I don't see how we have enough ABs for him this season, especially if another bat is added.

Sounds like they are taking to the Yankees, dodgers, and red Sox at this point. Ultimately he has to sign off on any trade because of his no trade clause. If he has those options available to him, he'll probably reject a trade here too.

Me too but then again my folks are from Wisconsin and hence went to quite a few games at County Stadium when I was a kid when we made trips up north to visit the family not smart enough to move to Texas.

I think Pete is going to come out okay in the end.

He's getting his 30 M a year. He will be sandwiched between or right after Lindor and Soto. He's still fairly young. I could see a monster year in 2025.

He hits the market again without the OQ and coming off a huge year. I could easily see a 4/96 or 5/115 M-type deal. If he were to get those then he's only need 2/31 or 1/12 to finish out his career to break even. It wouldn't be shocking if he ended up with more in the long run. There is just a lot more risk involved now.

Here is another thing to factor in.

2026 the CBA is up. Owners (or a subset of them not named the Dodgers) are already hammering for a salary cap. I'm guessing we get a work stoppage and maybe a big one.

A 3 year deal with opt outs places Bregman in the rock hard place of being out of work on a stoppage in his last year. That's a very bad place.

He can't afford to get in that spot.

This is getting so old. This will be what the 4th strike in my lifetime. Figure it out and play the game and handle the politics during the off season.

Another strike like the 94-95 thing will really bury the sport. I hope they're smarter than that.

This is going to be big owners who want to spend what they want and not share revenue, coupled with small owners that do not want be be forced to spend any money at all versus mid level teams that can't afford their own free agents and who don't have the massive media packages.

I think this one may get ugly.
