Good. I never wanted to pay Bregman for longer than 3 years without a club option beyond that. If somebody out there is going to exceed what we offered, I think they are overpaying and will regret the contract 3-4 years from now.

My guess is Bregman really wants to be in Boston and they are really close on acquiring Arenado so he is finally giving up on a long term deal and going 2-3 with opt outs with Boston.
Hoping to catch some of that 2017 magic with Cora. He has a break out year compared to the last two up there and his legacy will be so stained not even this can help erase it.....

So no mention from Dana about acquiring another outfielder?

As far as Bregman goes if he signs with Cubs, Red Sox, Tigers or Savannah Bananas , good luck to him. And thanks for the memories.

Earlier 2015 said they were still working on it and something may happen soon, asking prices are high.

$38.588MM.

That's what the Angles will pay Rendon to be injured this year. And it's what they will pay him again next year to go away.

The worst contract ever.
Oh, there's definitely been worse. It's not even July 1st yet.

Rendon just barely made the top 10 in this article.

how did they overlook stephen strasburg, 245 million for 31 innings pitched after 2019

Yep, Dana (and any other front office exec in sports) is never going to tell everything they're doing into a microphone.

Yes I read what 2015 said but Dana stated that the roster was set. Hopefully they will sign another left handed hitter and a pitcher.

I don't get his preference for that vs. taking the Astros offer.

He's betting on himself. He thinks he can produce well enough to get a better deal than the Astros offer once he opts out.

Luis had TJ surgery in May '23 and isn't throwing on a mound. I know recovery can take up to 2 years but good grief.

I was listening to the sports map guys and apparently he was one of the big complainers about how espada handled things last year (got pissed about how he communicated that he was being moved down in the lineup when he was really sucking, etc). Maybe he likes Cora/AJ more and doesn't want to play for Joe.

That sounds petty

Bregman was awful for a huge part of the year

Which is really dumb. He will be a year older with declining stats. I doubt he gets a better offer long term with multiple contracts

A lot of risk is baked into betting on yourself again

Injury, performance, team chemistry, etc

Gotta remember these guys think differently than fans. Some guys have always wanted to play for certain organizations, have relationships with people in the organizations, or just simply want changes of scenery for any number of reasons (baseball related or not). There's a lot that goes into it.

I agree completely. Not sure this works out in his favor in the long run.

I was just explaining the rationale of why he'd want that over what the Astros offered.

I guess the only saving grace is he hits pretty damn well in Fenway and that gives his numbers a bump.

And Bregman is a baseball guy thru and thru. I bet there is some part of him that thinks playing for the Red Sox and getting to call Fenway home is pretty cool. Also, Cora being the manager (for how long? who knows).

I don't remember Alex moving down the order for very long last year, but it seemed to work. Joe made the right call.

I know he's really close to Cora. Also grew up cheering for the Yankees so playing in the AL East and being a part of the Yanks/Red Sox rivalry might be appealing to him

I think Boras is going to have to work his ass off to get Boston to offer as much as some others. Based on what Carabas has been saying, I think the trade is way more likely. Sox seem to be waiting on Bregman to decide for the they pull the trigger on the trade.

It's going to be interesting over the next few years to see how much "betting on himself" ends up costing Breggy. He'll be 31 years old when the season starts. Is going to sign a deal for $30M/yr for 3 years and then go for another contract at the age of 34? Will that contract be worth $65M?
