The problem is Montero sucks. Last we saw of him he wasn't even rosterable.
My guess that's what the hang up is. STL is looking to dump salary. Makes sense that they don't wanna dump salary only to take on a AAA pitcher making major league money.

If we assume nothing else that means they got from 60 M present day (74 actual) million to 11 M. 49 M in savings. They'd do that deal. However, I think we are asking for more.
I think this is the sticking point.
When we originally wanted to get Arenado, we had plenty of room in the 2025 payroll. Since then we inked Walker and only got rid of part of Pressley, we sit at only ~5 M of space. Maybe before we were fine with taking on 30.5 M in AAV but now we're not. So we're asking for more relief in 2025.

In the last deal it was reported the Cards would take on 15-20 M. That means we can probably squeeze 8.5 M more out of them. However, I am sure they wanted it spread out over 3 seasons, not all in 2025. Can we toss in a prospect to make it work? IDK

Only Caratini would fully get it done, assuming the Cards threw in 8.5 M all for 2025. I don't think that is a safe assumption. I think we need to move both to truly make it work.
If we feel good enough about Salazaar, Rogers, and/or Whitcomb then I think you can find a way to make this work.
Life without Caratini and Dubon would look something like this:
C - Diaz, Salazaar
1B - Walker, Dezenzo, Paredes. Diaz
2B - Paredes, Altuve, Rodgers or Whitcomb
SS - Pena, Rodgers or Whitcomb (both backups are kind of reaches)
3B - Arenado, Paredes
LF - Altuve, Alvarez, Deznezo, Gamel
CF - Meyers, McCormick
RF - McCormick, Gamel
It is a very strong offensive and defensive starting lineup, but the depth up the middle (C, SS, CF) is kind of scary. Dubon's versatility is a big deal defensively. Caratini is a damn good back up and bat off the bench.
One other thing to note - Arenado's AAV is much larger than his actual pay. Crane would be saving some serious money between the difference there and clearing another 11 M in Caratini and Dubon.
