If we're in contention for the division you'd want to trade away a piece and not compete for it? That seems like crazy talk. The goal is to win a title. You gotta make October to do that.
I will give an example. Let's say the Dodgers have SP injuries again and need a starter. They have a switch hitting SS named Alex Freeland in AAA who is blocked by Mookie and Edman. I would trade for him and immediately plug into 2B to get that extra lefty bat. Will he be as valuable as Framber this year? Probably not but it isn't impossible either. This team has better pitching than hitting so maybe that gives you more of what you need.
