Here is what I did not expect this season: The bottom of the order essentially setting the table and carrying for the rest of the order.

This is going to come at the cost of a lot of injuries. Trying to get pitchers to go at world series level during spring training is not a great idea.

Maybe, maybe not, but the WBC is great for baseball, the last one was one of the better international sporting tournaments in years, and the players from all over the world clearly cared deeply about representing their countries and winning it. I am not swayed by arguments that it should be all JV teams because of hypothetical possible injuries.

Yeah that's kind of the problem. There's never a good time to have it. During spring training isn't good. After the season isn't good. Certainly can't do it mid season.

I didn't remember how long Wandy was on our roster.
That app seems to take a lot of pleasure in making me recall the misery of the 2000 Astros.

Gotta love the questions about 2008-2014 Astros. Especially the pitchers
I went to a game in 2009 and then not again for almost a decade (had kids). We had AT&T when they were only on Comcast in that stretch so I also didn't see them play on TV for a long time. . In 2013, we rented a beach house in Galveston, ideal for 2 1 year olds, and I was so enthused to see the Astros on TV for the first time. Got in the beach hours, turned on Comcast, and they were losing to the A's 10-0 in the 4th inning.

2013 was rough. But those were the glory days where you could buy a ticket with a Powerade label for like $3 and then scoot all the way up to the dugout seats. You almost always watched a beat down of a game, but it was much more cost effective than it is now
Well not to be Old Man Astro, but until my brother turned 14 in 1984, my family could go to a game in the pavllion of the Dome for $11.
$4 x 2 adult tickets = $8
$1 x 2 child tickets = $2
$1 for parking = $1

As late as 1997 -- you could get a pavilion seat at the Dome for $4, and parking for $4. I ended up going to about 25 games that summer.

I loved the outfield seating at the Dome. I wish Daikin had more of it.
In '94 when I was home from A&M, I got a 20-game mini season ticket plan for $200. Fortunately all of the games were before the strike. I was there on a Monday night when the team got down 11-0 to the Cardinals and won 15-12.

In '95 my buddy and I went to a doubleheader vs. the Padres in the Pavillion - first game was 17 innings. Got to see 26 innings of baseball for $4.

You could do it mid season IF you ditched the ASG and cut the season back to 148 games or so. It would probably take some weekend DHs too.

Of course cutting back games is a complete deal breaker for owners.

Pitchers Overperforming
  • Bowden Francis (TOR): -.092 (wOBA-xwOBA), -2.29 (ERA-FIP)
  • Tyler Anderson (LAA): -.038, -2.62
  • Shota Imanaga (CHC): -.059, -2.22
  • Tyler Mahle (TEX): -.090, -1.83
  • Kevin Gausman (TOR): -.066, -1.37
  • Garrett Crochet (BOS): -.069, -1.06

Maybe not super high on the list, but a name to keep up with is our own Hunter Brown -.053, -.087. On the flip side, a few names that have sucked that should bounce back - Dylan Cease, Chris Sale, & Cole Ragans top the list. Stuff like this was always helpful to me when looking at fantasy trades and pickups.

We should see both Gausman and Francis today and Wednesday. Let's start the regression.

Why does SCHN deprive us of this

This is a consequence of the deals the network got when they emerged from bankruptcy. Unlike any other RSN they got guaranteed long term carriage agreements from Directv and Comcast as part of the bankruptcy settlement. Those deals still provide more revenue than launching a DTC product which is actually dilutive to the bottom line for all RSNs and would be significantly more dilutive to SCHN due to their long term rate structure. Not saying they won't eventually launch a DTC product, but they have more incentive than any other RSN to hold off as long as possible.

Kinda makes you wonder how they're gonna handle the Olympics in 2028. They having it at dodger stadium, but are any MLB players gonna get to play?

I think the NHL just showed you can in fact do an int'l tourney midseason. Just replace the now completely worthless HRD and All-Star Game with it on those years.

But if they don't, I don't actually care that it's during ST.

Jake climbed the bating order last May when he started to hit well and proceeded to struggle. I'd prefer to see him remain at 7-8-9.

Seems like you could make the All-Star Break 2 weeks and tell guys who are considering the Olympics to decide if they are opting in for the Olympics or not. Everyone who is going to be on the Olympic consideration list is exempt from the All-Star ballot.
Toss in a couple of futures games, or have an Old-Timers' game, which used to be my favorite part of both the NBA and MLB all-star breaks, and you're good to go with content.

If you don't think an Old-Timers game is a good idea, here's a clip from 1982 of 75-year-old Luke Appling jacking a home run off Warren Spahn. Spahn was 61.

Zach with the spot start at first. We've essentially taken one of our top prospects and turned him into right handed Jon Singleton. Expect he's also taken some starts away from Chas, whom we don't really know anything about this season other than that he can lay down a bunt.

Meyers, Altuve, and Walker are all terrible vs splitters. Gausman throws more splitters than anyone. From '23-'25. he's thrown 2255. The next closest is Eovaldi at 1555.

He's also much better away from Rogers Centre. Don't feel great about this matchup. HB gonna need to be on his A game
