Tatis Jr is carrying the Padres. Right now he's slashing .354/.436/.691, with a wRC+ of 210. It's early and anyone can be on a heater. But…

Know what the last time was when he was playing this insanely well? The season before he got busted for "ringworm medication".

And of course his former teammate who just happened to have the season of his life in SD last year was recently busted for said "ringworm medication".

Nothing to see here. Move alone.

I love how the announcers talked about giving him a second chance, and yet none of the media had that sentiment for the Astros after 2017

Was out of town this weekend but have updated the Astros Bingo Pace Board

If you picked the Astros to win 75-79 games, you're in luck! They are on pace for 77.

The offensive pace house of horrors currently includes:

Yordan: 15 HR, 85 RBI
Diaz: 8 HR, 54 RBI
Walker: 15 HR, 31 RBI
Yordan hitting 94 points below .300
Meanwhile, Jake is now 75 points ahead of his .230 barrier.

If you want to feel better, consider:
Carlos Correa is on pace for 7 HR
Justin Verlander is on pace for 0 W
The A's lost 14-1, made 4 errors, and are drawing 10,047 fans per game
The White Sox are going to lose 123 games
Aaron Judge is down to a pace of a sluggish 52 HR

What is wrong with yordan this year? Is he hurt and not telling anybody? He has almost no power, which makes me wonder about the knee he messed up at the end of last year.

Not sure but he just missed the barrel and was a fraction of a second late on that fastball for the SAC FLY last night. He did his job in driving in a run but he normally gets more of the barrel there. He is strong enough to get a fly ball out of that but he got jammed.

I also think they made a great point last night about how Tucker's departure has had a negative affect on Yordan.

And I think they are 100% spot on. With no one to protect Yordan he's getting pitched differently with lots of spin and given that he's basically the only power threat there's that much more pressure on him. He looks like a completely different hitter than what we've seen in the past.

Not sure there's a solution with Walker on the struggle bus.

Except Tucker didn't bat directly behind Yordan all that much, maybe 30ish times last year & about the same the year before.

Yordan has 14 hits and 12 walks...so reached base 26 times...scored 4 runs

the guys hitting behind him are having significant issues too

Yeah…I felt this was just hot air espn was using to fill air time. It's easy to say that in general terms without having to look at specifics like pointed out above.

I mean Tucker missed 70+ games, no?

They said the same about Bregman, essentially saying by default bregman would have gotten on base instead of striking out, bringing up yordan with the bases loaded vs starting the next inning. Ignoring Bregman starting last year at or below .200 until mid may.

Might as well sing Jake's praises while the results are so good.

21 games into the season, Jake is hitting .305 with a .727 OPS and his WAR is already at 0.8 - his career high is 1.7 last year.

He's on pace for:
70 runs
139 hits
31 doubles
54 steals
39 walks
77 strikeouts

the walks/strikeouts is a real eye opener. Last year he struck out 117 times in 461 at bats.
The steals even more so. There's a very short list of Astros to top 50 steals in a season, led by two guys
that I'm assuming 99% of baseball fans outside of Houston have even heard of.
And how bad-ass was Cesar Cedeno?

1. Gerald Young, 65, 1988
2. Eric "Cool Breeze" Yelding, 64, 1990
3. MIchael Bourn, 61, 2009
4. Cesar Cedeno, 61, 1977
5. Cedeno, 58, 1976
6. Cedeno, 57, 1974
7. Jose Altuve, 56, 2014
8. Cedeno, 56, 1973
9. Cedeno, 55, 1972
10. Billy Hatcher, 53, 1987
11. Bourn, 52, 2010
12. Biggio, 50, 1998
13. Cedeno, 50, 1975

To add to the Jake love, he's currently 3rd in OAA for OFers.

1/2 on 5* (0-25% catch prob)
0/4 on 4* (26-50%)
3/3 on 3* (51-75%)
2/2 on 2* (76-90%)
3/3 on 1* (21-95%)

Reading about someone from Daily Walkoff today brought me to this all-time gem of a deal we did.

Ezekiel Astacio was traded to the Houston Astros along with Taylor Buchholz and Brandon Duckworth in exchange for Billy Wagner.

I don't expect Jake to bat .300 this season, but his approach has looked better. His chase and whiff percentage are down considerably, which has improved his overall numbers. The only thing lacking right now is power, but he'll start to connect on a few here and there.

Joe just needs to resist sliding Jake up in the order like he did last season. Keep him in the bottom third.

When did most of those come about? Where they within the last couple of years or more? Space City may not have been thinking that far ahead or Xfinity is paying them enough to not warrant having to do it on their own.

I went to a game in 2009 and then not again for almost a decade (had kids). We had AT&T when they were only on Comcast in that stretch so I also didn't see them play on TV for a long time. . In 2013, we rented a beach house in Galveston, ideal for 2 1 year olds, and I was so enthused to see the Astros on TV for the first time. Got in the beach hours, turned on Comcast, and they were losing to the A's 10-0 in the 4th inning.

2013 was rough. But those were the glory days where you could buy a ticket with a Powerade label for like $3 and then scoot all the way up to the dugout seats. You almost always watched a beat down of a game, but it was much more cost effective than it is now

This is going to come at the cost of a lot of injuries. Trying to get pitchers to go at world series level during spring training is not a great idea.

Agreed. Walker is more than adequate protection if he's hitting like he did the last two years. 2023 and pre-trade 2024 Paredes was better than Bregman the last couple years. While those guys aren't hitting this year, I doubt pitchers started to completely change their approach because of those guys around him.

Looking at his numbers, some of his current outcome is luck. The only thing that really sticks out is his meatball swing % is way down. He is getting roughly the same number of meatballs, he just isn't swinging at them. That tells me he either isn't seeing the ball as well or his approach is flawed (e.g. looking heater so not swinging at a hanging curve). He is really struggling against sweepers but he wasn't good against them last year either and is only seeing them fractionally more often so I wouldn't call that his biggest problem.

Well not to be Old Man Astro, but until my brother turned 14 in 1984, my family could go to a game in the pavllion of the Dome for $11.
$4 x 2 adult tickets = $8
$1 x 2 child tickets = $2
$1 for parking = $1

Expected Stats and who's "lucky" & "unlucky".

Unlucky
Yordan .280 wOBA, .375 xwOBA (-.095) - 7th overall
Diaz .183 wOBA, .272 xwOBA (-.089) - 12th
Pena .300 wOBA, .369 xwOBA (-.069) - 31st
Walker .240 wOBA, .291 xwOBA (-.051) - 60th

Lucky
*Altuve .324 wOBA, .253 xwOBA (.071) - 266th (out of 273)

Altuve pretty much always outperforms his metrics because he pulls the ball in the air, has some speed, and will take the extra base on hits.

As a team, the Astros ranked 7th most "unlucky" at -0.029.

As late as 1997 -- you could get a pavilion seat at the Dome for $4, and parking for $4. I ended up going to about 25 games that summer.

I loved the outfield seating at the Dome. I wish Daikin had more of it.

Maybe, maybe not, but the WBC is great for baseball, the last one was one of the better international sporting tournaments in years, and the players from all over the world clearly cared deeply about representing their countries and winning it. I am not swayed by arguments that it should be all JV teams because of hypothetical possible injuries.
