Well, if you're one of just 3 people to pick Hunter Brown All-Star on your bingo card, April 22 is looking
pretty good to you.
After last night's tour de force, Hunter is on pace for a 22-7, 1.16 ERA, 228 K year.

That's 4th in the AL in ERA
First in quality starts (5-for-5, no one else ha more than 3)
Second in wins
Tied for 5th in strikeouts
16th in strikeouts per 9 innings (9.0)
First in WHIP (0.74)

Other notables in the early AL leaders

Pitching
Hader is tied for 2nd in saves with 6
Abreu is tied for 1st in holds with 7
Bryan King is tied for 8th in holds with 5
Framber is tied for 15th in strikeouts with 26
Hayden Wesneski is tied for 9th in K/9 at 9.8

Batting
Altuve is tied for 7th in hits (27) with Bregman
Alvarez is tied for 12th in walks with 13
Jake is tied for 2nd in steals with 7
Pena is tied for 10th in steals with 5
Pena 16th in WAR (1.0)
Paredes 18th in WAR (0.8)
Altuve 14th in batting average

And while Mr. Judge is mocked and derided (by me) and others often, look at this freaking stat feat he's serving up so far in 2025.

#1 in BA (.384)
#1 in runs (21)
#1 in hits (33)
T-7th in doubles (6)
T-4th in homers (7)
#1 in RBI (25)
#1 in total bases (60)
#2 in walks (16)
#1 in OBP (.490)
#1 in SLG (.698)
#1 in OPS (1.188)
#1 in WAR (1.8)

At the 1/7th (14%) of the season mark, he's on pace for:
148 runs scored
232 hits
42 doubles
49 home runs
176 RBI
113 walks
And .384-.490-.698

He'll fall of certainly, but those numbers haven't been seen since Ruth and Gehrig.

Most surprising is Jake with 7 steals. He was always a fast guy that never seemed to be able to maximize the steal total. Maybe it is also due to the fact he is actually getting in base. I hope they keep him in the bottom third of the order. If he can create havoc on the base paths, then it could allow the 8-9 hitters to get more fastballs.

If Jake Money Meyers can keep playing CF like he is and somehow continue his 114 OPS+ while swiping 50 bags, he'll be worth his weight in gold.

fun or alarming stat about Jake from the radio broadcast last night...

he's 0 for 26 this year when batting with 2 strikes

He's also 0 for 13 with 3 strikes.

I guess he needs to swing early in the count.

What this game showed me:

Dezenzo should get more ABs
Rodgers should get more ABs
Dubon should get zero ABs

Back of the baseball card has turned into "HEB food commercial"

We have to play Dubon because he's supposedly a TV superstar

Current crop of Astros HEB commercials are straight garbage. Compare them with vintage Altuve sampling ice cream ("it's good") in a tux and see how far these commercials have fallen

Jake was awful last year with two strikes, so that's nothing new. It has to be a mental thing for him. He's always come across as somewhat of a mentally weak player, preventing him from realizing his full potential.

That's probably why he struggles when moved up in the order, too. Jake hadn't had a multi-strikeout game since game two of the season. The first time Joe bats him higher than 7th, he goes 0-4 with three Ks.

Keep it simple for him. Leave him at the bottom and let his focus be on getting on base.

All of Jakes strikeouts have come with 2 strikes

Point being, and I've said this for years, He needs to start avoiding this a little more

Wild statistical anomaly for the day - 100% of strikeouts for everyone have come after 2 strike counts. What are the odds?!

Teams in the AL West are also only .500 in division play. What a down year!

The key to getting strikeouts as a pitcher is putting batters in two-strike counts.

Man - with the way the bottom of the order is currently hitting 2-3-4 need to get it going. This team could really go on a run if the big guys could get it going.

Someone asked a good question about what happens if two players qualify for one team. You can only get one pick a year. However, MLB doesn't explain how that rule is applied. A player can only earn a team one pick in their career so which player does it apply to? Or does the pick roll to the next draft.

If you are the Astros and it has to be one player then you'd probably prefer Cam because it seems less likely get is a top 3 MVP candidate in the future than it is that HB is top 3 in Cy Young.

How are we feeling just past the 1/8th pole of the 2025 season? I'm surprisingly bullish considering the offensive struggles. I do not expect Alvarez, Diaz, Paredes, or Walker to slump this much through the entire year. The starting pitching has been good (tied for 6th in ERA and 1st in quality starts), and the pen has been better (4th in ERA). Pitching depth will improve once Arrighetti and McCullers join the rotation. The defense has also been consistent, with a borderline top 10 fielding percentage. And, I think Espada has purged most of the "Dusty" out of his system and settled into the manager role well.

The offense has been lukewarm, but the good news is that the proven stars are the ones scuffling. I wish Dana would have found another LH bat, but overall the Astros have avoided the big hole they tend to dig early in seasons.

I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Well, the team is +4 wins from this point a year ago when they were 7-15 and on their way to a 12-24 low point.
Hovering around .500 with new guys at 1B and 3B and LF and RF and 2B and your top 2 RBI leaders from last year playing like trash is respectable. And they are only 2 games out of first, as everyone is playing pretty much the same level of baseball. I'm super excited about Cam Smith, and unless the Cubs resign Tucker for 5-8 years, it seems like the early returns are that we ripped them off badly in that trade.

They were 12-10 at this point in 2023 and didn't get 2 games above .500 to stay until they reached 21-19. And yes, in 2022 they were also 11-11 at this point, but at the start of a 11-game win streak that saw them take over first and never lose the lead again.

From my cursory glance, the schedule doesn't get really nasty until August, when you've got:
@ BOS Aug 1-3
@ NYY Aug 8-10
vs. BOS Aug 11-13
vs. BAL Aug. 15-17
@ DET Aug. 18-20
@ BAL Aug. 21-24

The Orioles are scrapping right now, but I don't think any of us expect that to last. The Yankees and Tigers are both playing .609 ball and Boston is at .542. The Astros need to have a lot of wins stacked up before that 3 week stretch.

the most encouraging thing...

the American League as a whole looks very average / unimpressive

it may take just one 2-week hot streak in August or September to make the playoffs

speaking of dWAR...

it's bagging on Altuve already: -0.5

doesn't seem like he's been that bad

I'm about as confident as I can be about this team, and it is because of the second part I bolded - it's the big hitters who haven't gotten it going. With the way the rotation and bullpen are playing, once Yordan and Walker get it going, this team has the potential to make a run.

I hope Yordan and Walker get it going staring today, because the schedule sets up alright over the next couple of weeks to get multiple games over .500.

If Yordan and Walker get it going to end April - the Astros will have the division lead by the end of May at the latest and not give the lead back.

Interesting conundrum there. I would presume that if the season ended today, HB would be in the top 3. So not being there means doing worse than he has so far, so hard to root for. Who is Cam's competition for ROY? His numbers, while good for what may have been expected coming directly to the show, are somewhat pedestrian to think about post-season awards at least in my mind. Who should we be keeping an eye on for his competition for the top 3?
