Yainer 8 for 28 with 2B, 3B, HR and 5 RBI in last 7 games

Feels like an explosion from him given how he's started the season

We don't play Seattle until the last week of May. Hopefully Jorge Polanco won't be riding the hottest streak of his life by that point. 2 homers tonight (2- and 3-run variety) and a 260 (!!!) wRC+

You don't get a save by making the situation happen yourself.

For reference, Barry Bonds 2004 wRC+ for the full season, where he had a 37.6% walk rate and .450 ISO in accumulating 11.9 fWAR, was 233.

Absolutely insane tear for Polanco.

Edit: maybe 04 sticks out to me because of the walk rate, that was only his 3rd highest single season wRC+. Also had seasons of 244 and 235.

Pitching performance to date has knocks wood prevented team from building an early hole while offense struggled

If staff can continue this puts less pressure on Arrighetti, Javier, Garcia, and McCullers to return earlier

Astros to promote top pitching prospect AJ Blubaugh

By Chandler Rome
April 29, 2025Updated 11:02 pm CDT

HOUSTON The Houston Astros will promote pitching prospect AJ Blubaugh to make his major-league debut on Wednesday afternoon in a spot start against the Detroit Tigers.

Blubaugh boasts a 4.29 ERA across his first 21 Triple-A innings. He represented the Astros in the Futures Game last season. The 24-year-old right-hander finished with a 4.19 ERA in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

The Athletic's Keith Law slotted Blubaugh sixth in his preseason ranking of Houston's prospects, higher than any pitcher in the Astros' system. Blubaugh participated in major-league spring training, but is not on the team's 40-man roster, so Houston will have to create a spot prior to Wednesday's game.

The Astros selected Blubaugh in the seventh round of the 2022 Draft from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. When Blubaugh throws his first pitch on Wednesday, he will become the school's first pitcher to ever reach the major leagues.

Blubaugh closed for almost all of his college career before converting into a starter upon his entrance into pro ball. Blubaugh can reach 97 mph with his four-seam fastball, but usually hovers around the low to mid-90s. Before the season, Law wrote that Blubaugh's "probability of sticking in the rotation has gone up substantially since last offseason."

How long he sticks in Houston's major-league rotation is a mystery. Blubaugh will start on Wednesday in place of Hayden Wesneski, whom Espada said "needs a couple more days to recover from his last start."

The velocity on all of Wesneski's pitches declined throughout that outing against the Kansas City Royals, though he still managed to throw five innings of two-run ball. Asked twice this week whether Wesneski is healthy, Espada said he is.

Espada did not answer definitively whether Wesneski could return to the Astros' rotation during this weekend's series against the Chicago White Sox, only saying "I'm going to wait to make that call."

"I just want to make sure he plays catch, recovers well and I'll make a decision on that," Espada said.

If Wesneski is not ready to return in Chicago, the Astros could compensate by welcoming back a long-lost face.

Right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday morning at Daikin Park and, if all goes well, Espada hinted he could make his next start at the major-league level.

McCullers has not started a major-league game since Game 3 of the 2022 World Series. He underwent flexor tendon surgery in 2023 and missed all of last season after encountering a slew of setbacks

Another fun update of Astros Bingo

Team is up to an 89-win pace

Winning streak up to 3 (8 wins in a row gets you a point)

Yordan on pace for 101 RBI

Diaz suddenly up to a 67-RBI pace. And while it might not seem that consequential, he still only has 2 GIDP on the year. He had 22 last year. He's on pace for only 11 so far.

Walker has his RBI pace up to 50. It's been in the 20s most of the year.

Hader on pace for 112 strikeouts (100 is the money maker)

Rafael Montero has dipped under the 4.50 mark to 4.35 with Atlanta.

Bregman hits his 6th homer, on pace for 31. He hasn't hit 30+ since 2019

The Angels turning up the heat on 100 losses, now on pace for 93

White Sox on pace for 123 losses (115 is their target)

Dodgers get to 20 wins, on pace for exactly 108 (their target)

Ohtani hits his 7th homer, on pace for 38 HR, 38 SB

Judge hits his 9th homer, on pace for 49 (55+ target)

As frustrating as the early season has been at times, the Astros have a legit shot at being in first at the end of April, a square picked by our own TexAgs 2001. If the good guys win and the Mariners lose today, the two teams would be tied at 17-13. The Angels are throwing Tyler Anderson (2-0, 2.60) vs the Mariners Emerson Hancock, who I think is a character from a Civil War novel, and also 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA.

Oct 2022 - May 2025. Is there a pitcher that has had that much time off due to injury (or other reasons) and come back with success? What a great story for LMJ if he can pull this off and props to the Astros for hanging in there with him.

Chat GPT is a wizard…

Yes, one notable example is **Chris Carpenter**. The former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher had several significant injuries throughout his career, including shoulder and elbow issues. After undergoing multiple surgeries and being sidelined for more than two years, Carpenter made a successful comeback to the majors in 2011. He played a crucial role in helping the Cardinals secure the World Series title that year and was named the NLCS MVP.

Another example is **Jake Peavy**, who faced injuries that kept him out for extended periods, including surgeries on his shoulder. After missing considerable time, he returned to pitch effectively, including a key role in the San Francisco Giants' rotation during their 2014 World Series-winning season.

In fairness, the past week has done little to answer long-term concerns. I waffle between views, but my worst fear is becoming the Reds or Cardinals of recent years. Mediocrity should not be the goal... and I'm not claiming that it is. But, a known couple of facts are that Crane has a specific mindset on long contracts, and the organization has lost some of its historically better players as a result. I don't begrudge anyone asking what will be left if Alvarez and Valdez walk for nothing like Bregman, Springer, and Correa. It may be premature or not applicable for today's team, but it remains a valid question within context.

As you found the conversations funny, I find it amusing that anyone might expect this board to be monolithic in expectations. A discussion board built for the discussion of a passionate topic will generate a wide range of opinions. It doesn't make anyone a better or worse fan. I personally like the variety, and I enjoy a good rant when one of us loses his **** (lol). it beats a thread like the Rangers that can generate five posts over an entire game.

Garner was the perfect manager at the perfect time for the Astros in the 2000s.

Also some really low-key great yeares for those Pirates teams in the 70s. In 1977 he scored 99 runs, and had 35 2B, 10 3B, 17 HR, 77 RBi, and stole 32 bases. #3 overall pick in the 1971 draft. The two guys drafted ahead of him never made the Majors.
