Looks like they baited him with the high glove and then just executed high and away in the zone.

Patrick Corbin is about to complete his 10th consecutive season without missing a start. No, he's not in contention for a Cy Young, but with baseball's best defense behind him, this has to be the Moneyball signing of the year.

I would definitely look into signing him again. He shouldn't be too expensive.

His first 12ish starts were good, but he's been pretty poor since then and he has a -0.4 WAR for the season. He's eaten innings, which is great, but there's a reason he was available when he was at the price he signed for.
94chem

His season ERA is exactly the same as a quality start.

One way of looking at it, but another is that he's below replacement-level. His ERA+ is not good and it hasn't been even close to average since 2020.

One of the reasons I wanted to sell high on him at the trade deadline. He has a 5.19 ERA in the second half of the season. It was 7.17 in August.

I'll add that you could do a lot worse than an innings-eater at your 5th starter spot. But he hasn't been some revelation or anything. I say that as a guy who said he was a revelation in May haha.

No Eovaldi
No Seager
No Semien
No Garcia
No Carter

18 games to play.

1.5 back of a playoff spot, 4 back in division.

I think the point is that for $1mil he's over delivered on expectations and has provided extremely good value.

Will be interesting to see what the rotation is next year with Latz making a case, along with maybe Rocker

Right and my point was you are paying him below replacement level money and you are getting below replacement level production. I'm fine signing him for another $1 million next year if you tell me he's the 5th starter and he's just there to be a warrior and eat as many innings as possible over the course of the season. Just don't tell me he's actually good haha.

I don't think you can be in the running for "moneyball signing of the year" when you have an 83 ERA+ and a negative WAR lol.

Outside of Carter and Evo, what's realistic expectations for these guys back?
Mr Gigem

I think Seager and Garcia by end of regular season

Semien probably in the ALDS

Evo by the World Series. Although I would treat this very carefully. Still need him for two more years. Is another WS victory worth the risk of a further injury to Evo and missing part of next season?

Over his last 8 seasons, he has averaged 176 IP. Three of those seasons he led the league in losses, AND averaged 168 IP with a cumulative 5.8 ERA. Now, how many pitchers would be allowed to throw that many innings with that ERA, this side of the steroid era? The team has to be really bad, and he had to be the scapegoat several times. His ERA is going to be about 1.4 runs lower this season, and he is on pace to throw about 20 fewer innings than his 8 year average, AND finish second on the team in IP. So you can use WAR if you like, but the reason this pen has been one of the best in baseball isn't because of Eovaldi or Mahle or Leiter or Rocker or Latz or Kelly. It's more because of Corbin and deGrom. Only deGrom in 2025, Eovaldi in 2024, and Dunning in 2023 are on pace to throw more innings than Corbin this season. He will be roughly tied with 2024 Heaney and 2023 Gray.

Would I want him starting a playoff game? No, not really. But he would be a big reason why the pen is ready to go.

Freeman needs to be in the lineup every night here on out. I don't care who the starting pitcher is for the opponent.

I imagine Evo is shutdown for the year. To pitch in the WS he'd have to ramp up with a few simulated starts, which he wouldn't do unless he knew we were in WS... Which he won't know until it's too late to ramp up.

They said during the broadcast that Seager goes to the Dr this week (Tues?) and they will give him a plan to return based on that.

I could see Evo positioning himself as a 1 IP/G RP for the playoffs. Maybe a guy to come in with 2-outs

Zero chance they are risking the next two years of a Cy Young candidate on a potential inning of two.

I thought you were ignoring me. LoL.

The presumption is that his return would not further injure him. As you noted, he would not be able to give many innings.

He is the ultimate competitor and if he thought he could add 1.0 in relief... he'd make himself available.

I'm sure he'd gladly tell anyone who would listen he could go.

He's guaranteed $50M over the next 2 years to be our frontline starter. If he was due back mid-September for the final few weeks anyways then sure, but there's zero sense in having him ramp up his rehab for a World Series appearance that has about a 1% chance of happening.

Hard to know who to root for down the stretch. Really seems our best shot may be to have the Mariners overtake the Astros for the division and I think as long as we don't get swept next series we'd have the tiebreaker over the Astros.

Wish we still had tiebreaker games.
Mr Gigem

I have this weird feeling that we are going to win the division and both the Mariners and Astros miss the postseason entirely.

Admittedly I have not done any research into who they to play for the remaining games. Just a feeling I have.

Seems like the Yankees and Red Sox will take two of the WC spots, and there are 5-6 other teams all still in contention for the final WC spot
