So, a player has to be on the 40 on Sept 1, in order to be eligible for the playoffs.
Houston has 2 P - JP France (SP) and Hernandez (RP) on their 40.
They have 4 on the 15IL and 4 on the 60IL.
They have 14 on the Active. Luis Garcia (SP) went down tonight. Likely done for the season. France is the likely replacement.
What happens to a team that doesn't have 14 available Ps on their 40 that are eligible for the playoffs?

You can add to the 40 for injury replacements.
Remember, Evan Carter wasn't on the 40 man until after 9/1/2023, but was allowed to play by replacing an injured Brad Miller.

I noticed that Duran came in at 2nd for Freeman in the 9th. Was that purely a defensive replacement? Imo, Duran should be playing RF. I like the arm, and the offense vs. Osuna is a wash. But I wasn't aware that Duran was considered a defensive upgrade over Freeman.

I've been saying to anyone that will listen that Houston is who we would likely catch, if we catch anyone. They had a spectacular May and June but it looked like smoke and mirrors.
I'm not saying we'll catch them but if we make the playoffs it will probably be Houston watching from the couch this October.

Garcia isn't going against anybody. Elbow injury last night. Very unfortunate after 2 years away.
I was listening to the Astros last night when they went to the 10th. Altuve was the ghost runner, and I thought to myself, well, at least there's a chance they won't score because Altuve is base-running. Darned if he didn't get thrown out at 3rd on a routine grounder to 1st! The radio crew didn't mention this part, but apparently Altuve was half-assing it to 3rd base.
I assumed it was a screamer like once when I saw Odor gun him down on a one-hopper, but this was a bouncer to deep first.

Haven't been watching as much because of football season, busy at work etc., but I've been sitting on this take for a bit; I desperately think the MLB needs to chop off games from 162.
It'll never, ever happen imo, and I understand why for the most part, but if the MLB really wanted to inject energy, passion, stakes, meaning etc. into these games, they would get rid of 40+ games on the schedule. The energy and detail this team has been playing with for the past three weeks or so is so great to see, but I can't help but think it's mostly brought on by the desperation that each of these games is GIGANTIC if they want to make the playoffs.
I also think some of the guys in the lineup have brought a different energy as well, but most of it I believe comes from being in a dog fight on a night to night basis in order to win, and to replicate that across the regular season more often I think chopping off games and making each mean that much more would help 100x.
