Haven't been watching as much because of football season, busy at work etc., but I've been sitting on this take for a bit; I desperately think the MLB needs to chop off games from 162.

It'll never, ever happen imo, and I understand why for the most part, but if the MLB really wanted to inject energy, passion, stakes, meaning etc. into these games, they would get rid of 40+ games on the schedule. The energy and detail this team has been playing with for the past three weeks or so is so great to see, but I can't help but think it's mostly brought on by the desperation that each of these games is GIGANTIC if they want to make the playoffs.

I also think some of the guys in the lineup have brought a different energy as well, but most of it I believe comes from being in a dog fight on a night to night basis in order to win, and to replicate that across the regular season more often I think chopping off games and making each mean that much more would help 100x.

Go read the realignment thread on the board, if you haven't already.

Someone posted a Jomboy video of him discussing shortening the schedule, I think by only about six games. But the main point was having a 1st half winner and a 2nd half winner. I think this is a good idea because it gives an incentive to a team that has a rough April and/or May to do better in the 2nd half of the season.

His plan also allows for each league to have a day off every week. The AL on Monday and NL on Thursday.

I'll go to YouTube and see if I can find it a post it here. It is about 30 minutes in length but you can skip the last 5 to 7 minutes.

I believe 6 games over .500 has been our high water mark several times this season. Time to break through that. I love that we are clawing our way back into contention. Not sure if we'll win today, but I fully expect Merrill Kelly to pitch his ass off today.

I don't want less baseball because I enjoy it too much. However, the only real reason it is this long is because there was nothing else. It started when it was warm enough to play in the northeast and rust belt and ended before it was too cold. They added more with expansion later to try and keep games played even. Now, with postseason expansion going from strictly World Series to LCS, DS, and now wild card series it has stretched it even further. Perhaps a 154 game schedule is ideal.

They need to shorten regular season and grow the playoffs.

No other sport has this short of a post season compared to the regular season. You only have to win 11 games to win the WS… after playing 162. ~8% of games

By comparison, NFL: 3 to win of 17. 18% games
NHL: 16 games. 20%
NBA: 16 games. 20%

Should go to 4 rounds of best of 7 and shorten by about… 20 games. Would be ideal if playoff baseball started Labor Day weekend.

You can win your division with 90 wins and then season is over if you lose 2 out of the next 3.

I get it, current format puts SO MUCH pressure on the playoff games, especially early on but not sure we always see the best club win. That being said, getting hot and sequencing brought us our first World Series.

I like the 162. It is a grind.

How you manage the season and your body relies on the grind.

Hate the idea of 1H/2H winners.

You can't take your 1H winner team/players to the playoffs. Your roster is different.

1-0 today.

Yeah I don't like the 1H/2H winners either. So if you're in after the first half, you can then rest your players and coast the rest of the way knowing you're already in? Come up with some shoulder discomfort or hamstring tightness to get a look at younger players in what amounts to exhibition games?

It would also kill attendance for the ones already in since the second half games would be meaningless.

And one league gets Mondays off and the other league gets Thursdays off? What happens when they play each other?

I can poo poo on that idea all day long, but I'm good there.

Pretty neutral on reducing the number of games though. I can make a case either way on that.

Going to have to disagree with you here. I think Jomboy's idea/formula rocks. It creates intensity and meaning for basically every game throughout the season without getting rid of a ton of games, and it makes things incredibly uniform across MLB, which I think is a huge issue with baseball these days. It would be awesome to get this type of recent Rangers drama at the end of June. It also keeps teams invested across a whole season and not everyone just becomes a fire sale at the deadline etc.

The playoff seeding and formula also still rewards the best records in each division and league across the year, so you still get some resemblance of the best team across the full season. Some minor leagues already do similar things with a first and second half.

It's not perfect but I think it does a lot of good to make 156 games more palatable and mean more.

I don't want intensity and meaning during the season. It is a time to explore talent and strategy.

Jim Lites tried to give us NHL intensity and it resulted in constant blaring sound and unnatural over-production.

If you want gimmicks, look to the NBA and their in-season tourney.

Not a fan of drastically decreasing the sample size in a sport where the best team only wins 60% of the time. Also the longer season creates more storylines.

Just looking at it from a Rangers perspective, the proposed new schedule would not have allowed for Evan Carter to come help the Rangers make the playoffs down the stretch and it wouldn't allow for the current little rascals to be pushing the Rangers towards the playoffs.

Ah, yes, sorry.

Regardless, it looks like Grapesoda hasn't posted since 2/1/25. I sincerely hope he's OK. Do permabans keep you from re-registering with a new account? It's always odd when someone just completely disappears seemingly in mid-post.

Ok, got out with only 2 runs. It's time for the offense to pick up Kelly.

Also, I just noticed that Helman has the highest AVG of anyone in the lineup today, at .255.

The MLB app made it look like strikes 2 and 3 caught the zone. But either way, that's tough to go up 3-0 and then go down on 3 straight called strikes.

I don't specifically recall strike 2, but strike 3 was close, but clearly a ball when watching on tv.

Strike 3 was certainly out of the zone. I've been working so only half watching but that call was noticeable.
