Perhaps, but a .750 OPS is better than what most franchises endure from an aging icon. That is still an above-average offensive player, even if a defensive liability.

I also think Altuve's decline will be more tapered than drastic. In some ways, his style will insulate him a bit. He is a true see ball, hit-ball guy, for better and for worse.

I don't disagree, and he earned the money for what he's done, but he's still going to be a massive overpay on a team that needs money badly

I think Correa's deal is riskier than Altuve's, personally. The good news is he still plays good defense, but his bat is already worse than Altuve's at a significantly higher AAV.

His contract doesn't last long though and I have more confidence Correa is young enough to turn it around while Altuve should be straight up decline

the reality is that most big contracts and big salaries are bad ideas

in part because players seem to get hurt nowadays more than ever

The face of a crook. If I defrauded an organization out of $250M, I'd be facing charges, the Angels want to pay him off and send him on his way.

Phew, JP, you're leaving a lot of potential doubles, triples, and homers out there getting engaged at age 28.

Arlington busy signing free agents. Signing Jansen for catcher hopefully will give Astros good chance of resigning Caratini.

Chandler's article today said that it's unlikely because teams are looking at him for primary catching jobs. He also said the Astros don't want to use Salazar as the backup for fear of "exposing him", whatever that means.

I thought I read that Caratini couldn't physically handle the workload of being a primary catcher for 162 games.

I believe that has been discussed, but some other team is certainly welcome to pay him to try.

No catcher plays 162 games but we would likely need to commit to 120+ games for him.

$20M/yr??? that seems like a wild overpay.

I guess I should have worded that as over a 162-game season. As the primary, he'd be catching 3-4 games in a row most of the season. He's only come close to that once or twice in his career, catching 93 and 84 in back to back seasons. I'll be shocked if he catches more than 80.

Polanco doesn't turn 33 until late July. Walker will be 35 on Opening Day. I honestly thought Walker was already 36-37 based on the slow swing on fastball last year. That said, if you can give me

Pena
Paredes
Altuve
Yordan
Diaz?

in front of him, I'm totally OK with a 25-90-.240 season.
