It just makes so much sense. I say this as someone who really likes Paredes. There just aren't a ton of trade partners who want to do player for player type deals. I don't want to get rid of such a valuable bat for more cap room and prospects. I want to go for it in 2026.

If you asked me today... I would say Paredes is in another uniform on opening day. I have this on good authority.

Obviously nothing is guaranteed and trades are complicated to make happen, but I would be fairly surprised if he's not moved.

What are we expecting from Cam Smith this year?

15-20 HRS
.270 at the plate
OPS .800?

I cross my fingers we see that kind of upgrade in his second year.

I fear 7 HR, 10 at the plate and an OPS of .680.

I really think Paredes/Duran is one of those trades that benefits both teams. Boston gets a guy to play 3B, with controllable years and one whose swing is tailor made for that park. We get a LHH CF/corner outfielder with controllable years with proven speed and a proven hitter.

Exactly. I hate to lose Paredes, but it allows you to clear the logjam while acquiring another useful bat who has even more team control.

It just makes too much sense.

I just know we are gonna do this and then Correa or Walker is gonna get hurt and be out for the year. Also Paredes is only 26 years old. Don't like this.

The opposite fear is that Paredes injures his hammy again, but this time it requires surgery and months of recovery. That thinking can go both ways!

It's amazing how this board establishes the value of players. I like Paredes, but he has been traded twice in his career already. He fits Daikin Park because he's a pull/lift hitter, but he doesn't hit the ball exceptionally hard. Walker gets bagged on for his slowing bat speed, yet he's still above league average while Paredes is well below.

Walker

Paredes

Duran

Personally, I appreciate Paredes ability to be a tough out and work counts and foul off a number of pitches. A quality this team severely lacks without him.

But I'm also in the camp of being fine if he's traded for Duran and having Walker play 1B. I don't view Walker as the liability people think he is.

Someone has to go and it doesn't look like it'll be Walker.

If the Boston return for Parades doesn't include Duran I'll be puzzled

No clue what happened to my response, but I suspect Dana will seek an active roster, left-handed hitting outfielder with service time remaining.

The only haul I would consider is Duran + Controllable pitching

It would still be hard to pull the trigger on because it hurts us in 2026/2027

what about Walker's -1.5 dWAR at first base?

we okay with that for 2026

And unfortunately a less imposing bat with far fewer home runs. Only big bopper in our lineup is now Yordan and *maybe* Walker

Duran also has mental health issues, which need to be considered

Duran hits a lot of doubles and triples. Which would really help our RISP stats if he can do it with guys on base (I'd bat him 2nd behind Pena or 4th behind Yordan/Correa and in front of Altuve). He also steals a lot of bases.

60 extra base hits for Duran last year (16 HR, 41 2B, 13 3B) and a 4.7 WAR.

Even if Paredes was healthy the whole season he wouldn't have matched those numbers.

If Duran was on the 2025 Astros offense

WAR: 2nd behind Pena
OPS: 4th
HR: 5th
2B: 1st (by a lot)
3B: 1st (by a lot)
RBI: 2nd
Games Played: 1st

That bat hitting 4th or 5th in our lineup would be awesome

I'm legit concerned about his hammy.

Paredes and the Astros are headed to arbitation as well if he isn't traded. That $1.2M difference in salary numbers between the two parties will factor into trading him with payroll already close to the CBT.

Duran is more valuable than Paredes. We'd had to add to get him.

no it won't. They know he's a stud and will help this team. Not saying they won't trade him, but his salary wont be the reason why.

Paredes crushed expected #s because pulling the ball in the air is such a valuable tool, especially in ballparks with short porches.

To everyone. The Red Sox model is going to say we need to throw in something to make the deal fair.

It's actually 70 EXB - 41+16=57+13=70

But a full season projected of Paredes last year would have been 24 2B, 2 3B, 32 HR (58 EXB).

I'm not sure Durran's doubles and triples totals are worth more than 32 HR

Other notables from looking up Durran's stats.

Slugging dropped 50 points from '24 to '25
OPS dropped 60 points from '24 to '25.
Average has gone from .295 in '23 to .285 in .24 to .256 in '25.

He walked 60 times in 2025, struck out 169 times, while Paredes was on pace for 80 walks and 120 K.

The biggest factor in Paredes .> Durran for me is Durran will be 30 on September 5th, while Paredes turns 27 in February. 27 is supposely the "start your prime age'.

He's only more valuable due to an extra year, and defense (which we don't need)

I want us to be the best we can be this year and the next, and our best odds are with Paredes and not Duran

That's why I only trade him in a lopsided Tucker type move
