Walker isn't going anywhere.

If he's gone who the fack plays 1B? With Caritini and Dubon gone we have no one to play 1B.

Yanier or Parades I suppose but each one of them have serious question marks at that position.

Paredes can handle 1B fine. He played some there back in his TB days.

While messing around with MLB Filmroom, I came across some Astros highlights.

Longest Home Runs

OF Assists

Hardest Hits

Best Catches

I knew he played some but the biggest concern would be how his hamstring holds up stretching at 1B over a full season.

Guess that's the dice roll in clearing Walker's salary and finding a spot for Isaac.

Walker would upgrade their defense!

But would it?

Defense is one of the few things he's still decent at.

He did show up to work every day and hit more home runs and drove in more runs than anyone else. He probably could have watched from the dugout like some others but give him credit for playing through some things and not taking the other way out.

Interesting trade proposals from Schoenfield:

Quote:

Houston Astros trade 3B Isaac Paredes + cash to Pittsburgh Pirates for LHP Hunter Barco, 3B Jared Triolo
Speaking of third basemen, the Pirates are apparently looking for one. They were in on Suarez, matching and willing to exceed the Cincinnati Reds' offer of $15 million, according to reports. The Pirates rank 23rd in projected WAR at third base, with Triolo soaking up most of that projection. Well, the Astros have two third basemen in Paredes and Carlos Correa, and as much as they might try to jam Paredes somewhere into the lineup, he's an awkward fit. If he plays second, that means playing Jose Altuve in left field, which is a terrible idea. If Paredes is DHing, that means playing Yordan Alvarez in left field, which is also a terrible idea. And if he plays first base, you're benching Christian Walker and his $20 million salary.

The Astros already acquired one Pirates starter this offseason in Mike Burrows in a three-team trade with Tampa Bay, but the rotation still has questions beyond Hunter Brown, including Cristian Javier (coming back from injury), Lance McCullers Jr. (his last good season was 2021) and Tatsuya Imai (transitioning from Japan to MLB). Ronel Blanco, Hayden Wesneski and Brandon Walter all underwent Tommy John surgery last season. Barco doesn't possess more than fourth starter upside but would give the Astros another rotation option, while a new-look Pirates infield with Paredes (who has two years of team control remaining and will make about $9 million in 2026), Brandon Lowe, Ryan O'Hearn and perhaps rookie Konnor Griffin would provide Pittsburgh with much more production (the Pirates were 29th in infield OPS in 2025).

Don't really see the need for another #4 starter, and we don't need a jag infielder. But, this second option might be intriguing:
Quote:

Astros trade 1B Christian Walker + cash to Padres for RHP Bradgley Rodriguez
This would be an alternate trade option to Paredes for Houston, with him then playing first base. Walker didn't have a good first season in Houston, his OPS+ slipping from 120 to 97, although he hit 27 home runs and Statcast still viewed him as a plus defender at first base. (Other metrics weren't as generous, but Walker won three straight Gold Gloves from 2022 to 2024, so I would be more inclined to go with the Statcast evaluation.)

After finishing 28th in home runs in 2025, the Padres need more power, and with Walker at first, they can slide Jake Cronenworth on a full-time basis over to second base. The current alignment doesn't project well, with the Padres ranking 28th in FanGraphs' projected WAR at first base (a mix of Gavin Sheets and Cronenworth) and 20th at second base (a combo of Cronenworth and Sung-Mun Song). Rodriguez is a big-league ready reliever who can help a Houston bullpen that is a little thin from the right side beyond Bryan Abreu, and while the Astros would have to pay down some of the $40 million owed to Walker the next two seasons, trading him would still clear some payroll to make another move.

That first trade does nothing for me. We already have a logjam of guys who can fill the 4-5 starter role and we already have 1 too many 3B. Any trade you make to get rid of a hitter as good as Paredes should solve a major lineup problem for you and this solves none of our current problems.

The 2nd one makes more sense to me, and Walker going back to the NL would be a good move for him given how well he hit the NL parks last season. Anything he can do to minimize how much he hits at Daikin should improve his stats over last year. It feels like an overpay though if we are carrying a decent amount of his salary. I would want another prospect (even if it is somebody down their list).

I'm trying to figure out what exactly they would consider a "prospect". I'd be interested in Mayer as a lefty infield bat. If you are trading me him and a good young arm I'm listening.

Yanks and Stros feel like teams buoyed by generational talent (when healthy) in Judge/Yordan, but overall the lineups are limited by age/defensive restrictions. Both teams seem to be pitching over offense for the most part.

Seeing what the Mariners/Blue Jays do in a follow up this year will be interesting, both of them not used to having the expectations of a division winner lately.

If the Athletics could cobble together a half decent pitching staff they could go on a mini run before the inevitable sell off. Their lineup reminds me of the relentless early dynasty Stros teams but the problem for them will be getting into the postseason to begin with. Can they find their own JV?

I will say this, if Yordan has a monster year I'd sell high and trade him. As many health issues as he has now I can only imagine his 30's. Reminds me of Beltran.

In terms of batting, OPS+ Judge is at 179 for his career and Yordan is 163. (Fangraphs wRC+ is similar, 178 vs 163)

The last two years Judge has been nuclear obviously, but they're relatively in the same ballpark offensively, at least for Judge's first 8 years.

According to Chandler, trade talks have intensified in the last 2-3 days, mainly around Parades. Potentially 5 teams interested (only willing to say the Pirates and Red Sox, but there are 3 others).

Red Sox "not interested" in moving Wilyer Abreu

If they aren't moving Duran or Abreu the Mayer is the only one that I'm mildly interested in.

No clue who the Pirates have to offer. Barco is an interesting arm but not really a need and they don't have any big league ready bats. If they offer Barco and say Esmerlyn Valdez then it may be one of those too much value to pass up scenarios.
