Because Texas has other things to offer like culture and food and climate and scenery that others don't have. And that’s why people love it here.

i don't really love Texas. it has always been home for me, but i am ready for a change. i hate the climate and the scenery/landscape is flat and boring. colorado is tops on my list. i personally don't care for louisiana, as i think it has little to offer. i just thought it was funny that you are sticking up for louisiana but conceded that it is a "poor, uneducated, badly run state." you mention cajun food/culture, gambling, and new orleans..... i don't think that does much for a lot of people. new orleans is alright for mardi gras, but is not a very nice city. i can gamble online or get cheap/free flights to vegas. cajun food is good, but it is not one of my favorites. i actually have a friend from new orleans that is desperately trying to get to colorado.... he said something like "i'd rather live in a shack in the mountains than a million dollar house on the swamp." to each his own; i just thought i would throw my 2 cents in.

quote:
In fact, Texas loses to many states when put to those same criteria.

most states don't have the large # of illegals that texas has. it certainly drags down our numbers with respect to education and income.

quote:
Do they have gaming? I can't tell you 1 special food that comes from there or that they are known for.

i had no previous knowledge on the gambling laws in big sky country, but a quick google search reveals that montana has some gambling while there is only one casino in wyoming. i guess you really love your cajun food.

So go live in Connecticut. It’s well run, you’ll make a ton of money, and the schools are great. I’d take Louisiana 8 days a week.

you realize that i never commented on education, wealth, or how a state is run in my original post? so you are just assuming that they are important to me.

BTW Is Nise your last name? Is Charlie from Channel 5 your husband?

Wow... I never thought about that. Actually, Nise is just a nickname. My name is Denise, but in college all my friends shortened it to "Nise" and so it's stuck. Even my husband (who is the reason I'm in Nashville -- a musician, go figure) never uses my full name. I think my Mom and best girl friend are the only people these days that know there are two more letters to my name. LOL!

And speaking of roads... what's with street names changing names mid-way through, and then picking back up later? I thought that was something unique to A&M (where a street is one name on campus and another going into CS)... boy was I naive! Nashville takes the cake there!

Fuddruckers... yummm... I'm flying down to Texas in a week and a half for a wedding. I'm getting all sorts of ideas of places to go eat now.

But... I think I like Baja Burrito/Blue Coast Burrito better than Freebirds.

Louisiana is just a complete dump, plain and simple. New Orleans is one of the ugliest and most dangerous cities in America. The climate is awful....parts are even more humid and rainy than southeast Texas. I've always said that the ONE reason to at least drive through Louisiana is the food, but thats IT. I'd much rather go to Vegas to gamble and outside of a few days of Mardi Gras, Louisiana has nothing else to offer.

How ironic- one of my managers at Fuddruckers was also named Denise. She was a real cut-up.

I wish Fudd's still sold their mustard- man its awesome

if you go, eat a half-pounder and some fries for me

The closest I have ever come to a Fudd's tasting burger is the Toots here in the Boro. They cant even come close on the fries though

From this statement, you obvious know nothing of New Orleans and Louisiana. You are too ignorant of the city and state to make any type of claim.

He is ignorant of the state and city. Not because he disagrees with me, but because he obviously has not spent an extended period time there. The only areas I have lived in for an extended period are Louisiana, Texas, and the District of Columbia. I only consider myself capable of taking an educated stance on the 3 areas I have lived in for multiple years.

I've driven though all of southern Louisiana a few times (along I-10 and south of I-10 through New Orleans) and don't remember passing through one area that was really appealing in any way. My dad has had to do work out of New Orleans and knows people from there and has about the lowest opinion of it that anyone could possibly have. I'm sure NO is better now though since some of it's more esteemed residents have moved to Texas in the last few years.

I TOTALLY agree with that statement also. Crime has gone up alot in CS. I know there are both good Katrina apples and bad Katrina apples. I have heard some fantastic feelgood stories and some not so good stories...

Which has been disproven on this thread by anyone who has spent any amount of time there. And certainly not the least amount to offer among all 50 states. What advantage is there to living in Delaware over Louisiana, for instance?

quote:
i just thought it was funny that you are sticking up for louisiana but conceded that it is a "poor, uneducated, badly run state."

I was making the point you can find flaws with any place and I recognize the state I grew up in has its fair share.

quote:
you mention cajun food/culture, gambling, and new orleans..... i don't think that does much for a lot of people.

You'd be wrong. Louisiana has a good tourism industry, among the best in the US for those reasons. people like fun interesting places, not drab dull places like Wyoming, Montana, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska, The Dakotas, etc.

quote:
new orleans is alright for mardi gras, but is not a very nice city.

It is still recovering from Katrina but the grades are in from All star weekend and N.O. gets a A+ according to the media.

quote:

The point is for Houston/Dallasites, Louisiana offers the best gambling option, not having to spend $$ on flights to Vegas. I never said it was better, just an attraction. Since gambling isn't available in all 50 states, the fact that Louisiana has it and it is a major attraction to the surrounding states makes it an advantage.

quote:
cajun food is good, but it is not one of my favorites.

You are entitled to your food opinion but most people like the spicy, unique food of Louisiana. It is something very few states can compare to. The culinary wonderment of Wyoming is hard to beat though...

I don't know if I have ever heard anyone say "let's go out to Big Sky contry for some gambling". It is something to do while you're there. In Louisiana it brings in tourist $$.

Which is really the best way to know something about an area, what you can see from I-10.

I can't believe I am talking to someone who has only driven through Louisiana and surmised it is the worst of the 50 states, or thinks New Orleans isn't all that great because his daddy told him so. Try going there first ace. I promise you'll have the time of your life as long as you're not a stick in the mud. Even if you don't drink or gamble, New Orleans has as much interesting things to do and things to explore/learn about as any major city.

And Montana and Wyoming (and many other states that are boring) don't have anything close to that to offer. I don't know why that's so hard for you to admit. Louisiana is a fun interesting state, and is no way the worst of the 50 states. You can admit it, I won't tell your daddy.

I have never been to New Orlens, but I can easily agree that New orleans does have alot to offer from what I have read, and the Cajun food that I have eaten. Cajun food is- well- EXTREMELY tasty! Talk about a mouth dance. Just dont go TOO spicy and you will be fine. Also, my parents were there one year for their anniversary and went to a bar in the French Quarter- O'Briens or something like that- it started with an O'. The drinks she said were excellent as well as the entertainment and the atmosphere. New Orleans Jazz is quite good, and Im not even a fan of Jazz.

Fair enough...I like cajun food, gambling and drinking....And I'm sure there are SOME states that have less to offer than Louisiana...But I haven't been to any. I won't deny that VISITING Louisiana would be ok, if you went to the right place the right time of year. I do disagree that states like Wyoming and Montana are worse though. They are 2 of the most scenic states in the nation. You can't really say that a Louisiana swamp is better than Yellowstone National Park.

I think the tradeoff of being in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do 99% of the time in awful weather is not worth the pretty scenery. Not to mention the lack of amenities, shopping, industry. It would be an awful place to live. Yellowstone is great but that's not indicative of the whole state of Wyoming and Montana. Cool place to vacation once or twice in a lifetime. Not somewhere most people want to live or visit often.

As for you swamp comment, in Louisiana they have beautiful tropical plants and lakes and fishing and hunting. It's not one big swamp or as you put it, a dump. I'd say it's a lot harder to appreciate the beauty of Yellowstone in the bitter cold and blinding snowstorms than it is in Louisiana's mild winters and hot summers.

To each their own. If I were forced to live in either Louisiana or Wyoming, I'd pick Wyoming in a heartbeat. I'd also take cold and snow over rain and horrid humidity (I grew up in southeast Texas, and I'm still not used to it). I get that some would feel that complete opposite though, and thats fine. Everyone has their likes and dislikes.

Consol and Nise- I did a little intranet searching and there are 3(THREE) Fudd's in the Knoxville area.

Johnson City
2519 Knob Creek Road, Johnson City, TN 37604
Phone: 423-915-1004
Knoxville
8851 Town & Country Circle, Knoxville, TN 37923
Phone: 865-531-9494
Sevierville
168 Collier Drive, Sevierville, TN 37862
Phone: 865-453-2221

Any yes the roads are crazy as is the way people tawlk, but it is so beautiful here along the I-75 corridor. Chattanooga has a lot of stuff, as does Knoxville and I am 30 minutes from one and 1-1/2 hours from the other.

Middle and West TN may have more money, but East TN has the scenery, etc.

Thanks!! I'll definitely take some pictures! I have to go over to the Association and get my ring looked at. Somehow I cracked the band and I don't wanna mail it in for fixing. So not only will I be in CS, I'll be on campus for awhile. It'll be a nice trip back home just for THAT.

I will definitely agree with that! My husband and i make our way out that way at least once a year for the scenery. It may be touristy, but we get a cabin in Gatlinburg and... well... mostly just stay up in the mountains for a couple days. Love it.

Consol- Live in Angelo for 37 years until someone figured out that I was worth a whole lot more than my previous employer.

A really good friend of mine, who is also a sip, , lives near Nashville and loves it there. But even he and his wife make their way to Chattanooga or Knoxville when they can.

He was born and raised in Angelo and told me 15 years ago that he wouldn't go back. Like TN to much.

There is also a '66 Ag in Cleveland that told me at Muster 3 years ago that once we got settled in we wouldn't want to go back. Almost starting to feel that way, but I do miss not making all FB games......

Damning the entire state based on Katrina-exposed New Orleans and surrounding areas is ignorant. We don’t base Texas on Lubbock or various other less desirable places in the Lonestar.

If you like culture, unique food, unique entertainment, world class hunting and fishing, Louisiana is a great place. And yes you can get all that in many other states. Hence why we have 50 of them and for the most part everyone is real proud of theirs.

It is amusing hearing someone that has gone to Bourbon St. and/or Mardi Gras and has dealt with some “Katrina’s” cut on Louisiana as if they were some sort of authority.

Sidenote - Obviously said posters aren’t outdoors folks, because well then you are just morons, but this entertaining, please carry on…

It all comes down to things that you value and don't value....To some people, a state like California is perfect....to others, its hell on earth. The same could be said for Louisiana or even Texas. If you took a liberal hippie from California and forced them to move to Texas, they would hate it. The same would happen if you took a conservative Texan and moved them to LA. How much you love or hate a state just depends on what you place value in. I'm sure there are people in all of the states that we've named so far that love it there and woudln't move for anything.

I'll settle this Louisiana argument (or at least give it a shot).

I live in New Orleans right now and I have to agree that it's a lot of fun with a great culture, a bunch of cool places to explore and things to do.

At the same time, the entitlement attitude of the natives is absolutely mind-boggling. The entire place needs to be scrubbed down with bleach (its so dirty I don't even wear my shoes inside my house anymore). The corrupt politicians are unrivaled by any locale in the nation.

I've also spent time hanging out and going to games in Baton Rouge and playing in Lake Charles. Both places have a completely different feel than New Orleans and really aren't half bad at all. I think Baton Rouge is pretty nice (the women aren't half bad either).

Bottom line:
Peoples opinions about about Louisiana aren't really pertinent to this thread because there's now way in h@ll this place is worse than New Mexico, not even close!
