Anyone have anecdotes on public places being hurt by inflation.

I ate at chipotle today in Northwest Houston today (11:45 - 12:00) ---- Only one person came in!

I'm in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago right now and the restaurants and mall area is packed! I guess the 6 dollar a gallon gas isn't doing much yet.

I doubt that is because of inflation, grocery prices have gone up so much that fast food is a bargain even with higher prices. Every fast food restaurant I have been to the past month, including our local Chipotle, has been slammed.

Until we start seeing recession-induced job loss on a national scale, I don't think consumer spending will tighten. Saw a report that all Americans that were planning to vacation this summer aren't changing their plans or lowering their estimated spending for those vacations

They must have either just accepted current hotel/resort rates as the new normal or made reservations some time ago. Because I've been planning vacation for us the past two weeks and the lodging rates I'm seeing everywhere are categorically insane.

Yah, we have a couple of family vacations the rest of the year which were booked last fall but are balking at doing anything else into 2023 for now, prices are getting ridiculous.

just had lunch at "Not Your Average Joes" in Bethesda MD

not even half filled at noon

vegetable burger was not even a real burger, a few pieces of vegetables on a brioche. for 20$

ONE person cooking the food (we were told this because we were waiting so long to have our food brought out)

never again!

was at Gettysburg yesterday and some of the tour folks were discussing how the visitors have collapsed

guessing that it is because you have to drive a distance from any major city to get there.

but the state park at Fort Stockwell was full of El Salvadoreans!

I know because they literally had up flags and signs saying "El Salvador"

Probably says more about chipotle than inflation…

No data on public places, but certain things are continuing to increase in price.

The pre-packaged ham and turkey I buy at HEB had already gone up from $6 or $7 something per pound to $8.99. It was $9.99 when I bought it the other day.

One brand of egg white protein powder I've been buying was $33 for 2 lbs as recently as February. I checked the price yesterday and that same 2 lbs is now $70.

Others above are right about fall/holiday travel. Airline tickets are crazy expensive, flight times suck, and flights are very limited.

I was pricing hotels/condos along 30A for Thanksgiving and I cannot believe what places are charging for the redneck riviera! $650 a night for a hotel room in Rosemary Beach. I can't believe anyone would pay that!

I'm hoping those prices go down as the holiday approaches and they aren't rented.

Not tracking individual items, but my overall grocery bills are up ~20-30% no matter what we buy.

Fast food near me is slowing way down because they don't have workers. Understaffed and long wait times in store & at drive thru. Prices are higher, but the bigger issue appears to be service is being dragged down because workers don't show up and customers keep coming. Very very weird things are afoot.

Bunch of Chipotle haters up in here. Usually 10-12 in line at noon for the location.

Rode my bicycle to the grocery store like I always do yesterday. (bonus: exercise / no gasoline cost)

Avocados were on sale so I loaded up.
Fresh salad ingredients are about the same price - romaine & spinach bunches are $1/ea.
5lb of rice was $4. Gotta be careful with meat. Found some chicken thighs on sale. Making curry dishes this week.

Seems like the unhealthy and/or packaged foods are what have gone up in price, but I tend to stay away from those anyways.

Got all I could carry on my bike which is about 50 lbs. for $40. That's a slow bike ride home up the canyon road and its in the 90's here in Utah.

I (partially) stand corrected. You could technically buy 50 pounds of rice at walmart for 40 plus tax, so north of $45. Looking forward to seeing you compete on Survivor.

Very good, you found some loss leaders at that store. Doesn't negate reality of inflation.

Here is my 1 datum. I shop at Smith's, owned by Kroger.
Their store brand 64 oz apple juice used to go on sale for 99, now it is $1.29, a small 30% increase.

Milk has gone up even more, most likely due to fuel and feed prices.

Flew round trip from SA to Denver this weekend.

The combined security time for both trips was 10 mins and both airports were relatively empty. Wasn't flying at strange times either.

Prices are hurting folks. Thank goodness for SW CC sign up bonus + companion pass as a result.

-----

Also had to wait 30 mins at La Fogata in SA on Sunday night at 730p. Half the restaurant was empty. Just not enough staff.

Another anomaly, air travel is at a record.

I meant to post this earlier, although it's specific to women, so most of you probably won't be as interested.

The prices of beauty services are up. My hair stylist increased her price (modestly) back during Covid. But other things like nail manis/pedis, waxing services, and injectables (ie Botox) have also gone way up. And there aren't as many specials and discounts being offered.

I went to my injection provider on Friday. It's integrated into a plastic surgery practice, and they offer facials and massages and other stuff. I was the only one in there. Normally when I go the place is packed. I also had to pay full price (normally, I get discount offers via text, but I haven't received one in a long time).

I'm noticing the same thing at other places…plenty of appointments available and very few customers when I go. Maybe I just go at weird times, but I do think these types of services are the first to get cut when money gets tight (especially if you have a family to support).

This. I posted in another thread that prices really didn't start going up until about March. Fall and holiday tickets are crazy expensive (worse than I've ever seen it, and we always travel that time of year). Schedules are limited, too.

TSA screenings surpass 2019

The TSA screened nearly 2.15 million people on Thursday, close to 3% more than the 2.01 million people who passed through security checkpoints at U.S. airports on July 1, 2019.

The trend is unlikely to hold. July 1, 2019 was a Monday and a low point for the week, when screenings increased by more than 706,000 people to peak on July 5.
Fake news. Why is this article comparing Monday July 1st to Thursday June 23rd?

https://www.tsa.gov/coronavirus/passenger-throughput

There have been only 6 days (less than 4%) so far this year where passenger throughput is higher than the same day in 2019

I quit eating out much because the quality is way down and the price is way up.

If the food was good, I don't mind paying but they are rolling out **** on a shingle and charging $30 a head by the time you get out of there.

Whatevers left of mid-range restaurants are fixing to go tits up. Especially these specialty fast food joints.

Yeah, I've noticed the quality of food has detoriated as well. Not sure if it's half ass preparation or a downgrade in quality food or both.

Using $3500 in flights from my thrice delayed honeymoon since Spring 2020. The money they held on to for safe keeping and hoped I forgot about until now when it expires end of year.

I think we have 2 years of credits coming into the system. Prices went sky high because of the "demand" of people filling the spots on credit/lack of new revenue.

got takeout from Texas Roadhouse last week

the "half rack" of ribs was the saddest thing I have ever seen. It looked like two bones rather than a half rack. The chicken critters looked like nuggets.

Texas Roadhouse has been our go-to for a quick, quality and rather cheap to-go meal, but I don't think we will order there again for a while. The quality has gone way, way done and portions being cut (which I don't blame them if everything is going to be the same price)

1000% this. As I mentioned above, my wife and I have had our honeymoon delayed, and we have noticed the sticker shock on flights and hotels.

We booked our first class honeymoon seats on delta back in early 2022 to go DFW to SEA to catch an Alaskan cruise/mainland trip. Price then was $1400 a person. Same price now is $2500 a person.

Yah, I forgot that we also have $1K in credits that we have to burn by the end of the year or they are lost. Guess we will be spending a long weekend in Cancun or Arizona this fall.
