Long story short, I was severed from my company recently...16 years with them. Been awhile since I had a serious interview, but I have one scheduled for next week. (I've been on a couple internal interviews, but I suspect this one coming up will be more demanding/intensive).

The company is O/G, refining. Position is somewhat of a hybrid position...about 50% of it is involved in logistics/shipping (truck and rail) and all associated activities (contracts, invoicing, payments, etc) and 50% is sales/marketing of said products. I would have 3 people reporting to me...2 people involved in the logistics side (shipping/billing) and a 'clerk' that does the invoicing and a/p duties.

I'm certain I'll get the 'tell us about yourself' question, the 'describe a time you had a difficult coworker/customer' question, along with other 'standard' questions. I've been told they use Behavioral Based interview questions, as most people do now.

What are your top 5 questions you think I should prepare for?

Here are ten common behavioral-based job interview questions:
  • Tell me about a time when you had to overcome a challenge at work.
  • Can you give an example of when you had to work as part of a team to achieve a common goal?
  • Describe a situation where you had to use your problem-solving skills to resolve an issue.
  • Can you provide an example of when you had to adapt to a change at work?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to handle a difficult customer or colleague.
  • Can you give an example of when you had to communicate effectively in a high-pressure situation?
  • Describe a situation where you had to take on a leadership role.
  • Can you provide an example of when you had to work under tight deadlines?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to make a difficult decision.
  • Can you give an example of when you had to learn something new in a short period of time?
Behavioral-based questions are designed to assess your past experiences and how you handled certain situations. It is important to provide specific examples and describe the steps you took to resolve the issue or achieve the goal.

Those feel like "bloated company" questions. the kind with 7 layers of middle management where people who are able to generate politically correct and cheesy answers will fit right in. so in that sense they're good.

Agreed on all points, but based on everything I've found on the internet, those are right in line with everyone else. I'd love to sit down for an interview where we talked about strengths and expectations and how I would fit in with the team, but sadly, I don't think major corps do that anymore.

We use the behavior style interviews, I probably hold or support at least one interview a week. They've got their faults, but if you want to practice one, feel free to email me - username at gmail. Anything to help an Ag out.

Been a long time since I was in an interview so can't offer any insight. But I can say that I hope your interview goes well and that you get the job.

Think of one time you improved a process, one time you did something commercial, a time you stood up for something you stood up for something you didn't think was right, one time you spoke up about a problem, one time you screwed something up and hindsight could have gone better, a time you helped somebody develop, a time you had to adapt and a time you had to bring a bunch of people together to solve a problem.

If you can find an example in each of those buckets, you'll be just fine with any behavioral interview questions you might get asked.

Interview went good, not great. Bombed a couple questions on detailed sales strategies that I wasn't prepared for or expecting. (The position has more marketing, customer management aspects than traditional sales )

Started weak, but ended on a strong note. Should hear something very soon. I didn't hurt my chances but don't think I solidified them either.

Got a call back for an 'informal' follow up next Tuesday. Knowing full well they're making the decision next week, I'm pretty excited/nervous. Hoping it's my time to clear up a few things and smooth out some of my more struggled responses.

Well boys and girls, I got the gig. Submitted background check info today, go pee in a cup soon, and start 1/16. Salary isn't what I was hoping, but don't care. Work/ life balance, job duties, get to stay in Montana, and all kinds of other positives. Haven't been this excited in a loooong time! Also signed severance waiver today. It's a VERY good day.
