Home premium was 785 monthly. Local State Farm agent quoted $525. USAA has gotten rediculous

Yeah, State Farm is very well priced right now, especially on Texas home owners insurance.

I'm considering cancelling my USAA as well. Bundled home and auto and it's $3k. Best quote I've received is from Traveller's Insurance. Anyone have any experience with them?

I kept USAA as I shopped around. They had my insurance policy at the lowest, even for rentals and I have a $250 deductible with home insurance.

Where I did kick them to the curb is car insurance. It's been painful and I don't see how USAA can charge $2200 for 6 months vs $1600 for GEICO?

I shop every year and I've had them a couple of different times when they were the cheapest option. Same as anyone else*.

*Never actually had to use it.

I've got a pretty good priced term policy with usaa. If I cancel home/auto, think they'll raise my rate on life insurance policy?

No. They won't do that. Life insurance rates are independent of property and casualty rates.

I switched auto from USAA to Geico as well. Crazy price difference and I actually like the service even better.

Which is odd when the news says they've reported losing a billion a month last year

I have Travelers now, Home and Auto for <$3k and it's the lowest I found through a Goosehead agent. Haven't had any claims but my parents did a few years ago on auto and was a good experience with the claim.
Are y'all really seeing rates of $785 per month for Home?

I've been with USAA for 53 years. They used to have impeccable customer service. My original insurance was thru my Dad with GEICO, back when it stood for Government Employees Insurance Company. We got our auto renewals and they had our vehicles reversed (I'm a Junior). As a Senior under ROTC contract, I was eligible for insurance thru USAA so I switched. This was back when they only allowed officers as members. My Dad switched shortly thereafter since he'd been an officer in WWII.

I've seen the customer service deteriorate over the years. I think this is largely because of the expansion of USAA membership. I had no problem when they allowed enlisted, nor anyone who was honorably discharged, to join. My problem is allowing those related to a USAA member. The husband of my niece was dealing with USAA on claims from Hurricane Harvey. He had membership because he married my niece, who got it from my brother (never served), who got it from my Dad who passed away in 1985. In contrast, my MIL was ineligible because my FIL died before enlisted were eligible. He was a WWII Army combat veteran who went to the AF after it was formed.

I have not shopped for other but your posts may prompt me to do so.

I shopped my USAA home/auto bundle thru an independent agent who initially said "Wow, you pay a lot of money" then said "Keep what you've got, I can't beat it by much." Been with USAA since the 60's, changed once for about 7 years and that wasn't pleasant. They've definitely changed but then, which agency hasn't? I'm just glad I don't live in California.

AgWorkers for car insurance has been the lowest price, by far.

Until self-insuring I found Allstate had competitive rates for various deductibles.

Big water leak last year that ruined drywall and wood floor in living room. USAA had water team out there same day and to start the process. After deductible, they basically covered entire cost besides the upgraded flooring. No price increase this year.

You can further keep valuable property insurance even if you cancel your home and auto policies.

Mentioned on other USAA threads that my home policy went up 70% in three years despite no claims. Left them for Travellers. No claims experience with them.

I recently left USAA (home/auto) after 34 years. I decided to "shop" my policies and had an independent agent take a look at various options. I essentially kept equivalent coverage and saved ~20%. I had/have no concerns with USAA, simply a financial decision to move on.

For those of you leaving USAA, you will receive full pay out on your Subscriber Savings Account (SSA) at the six month mark post cancellation. Depending on how long you have been a member, and policy values, your SSA can be significant.

F4GIB71: Howdy, we must be about the same age, guessing you are Class of 71, I am Class of 70. Exact same experience as you with USAA, joined when Army offered me contract as a Cadet. Like you the 'Old' USAA was great, the 'NEW' USAA not even close to the same service. I have just been to LAZY at 75 to shop around for new insurance, have had everything with USAA, house, cars, personal effects, life forever.

That said, lately I have been very unhappy with the costs! Car insurance for sure seems too high. But, last year I went on Outdoors to check with those guys. Seems all insurance is going up! USAA insurance going up, USAA customer service going DOWN! I feel trapped, been with them so long it is hard to switch, but with this 'NEW' USAA do not think they would give it a second thought.

Confused in Rockport!

Corps Turd: Howdy, may I ask what independent did you use? Wow, 20% is significant. Forgot about my SSA account, thought you had to die to get that. After 50+ years mine is slightly above $5K, was at one point much higher, cannot remember why the decrease.

Yep, class of '71. I remember you Mr Fairchild, sir. I was in G-1 until I switched to AF my last semester when I heard I could go to Navigator training without 20/20 and fly F-4s (GIB means guy in backseat). Was later in same squadron and lived across the street from Buddy Mason. I was one of his pallbearers along with Bubba Craighead. Buddy was a great guy and outstanding pilot. Never thought I'd say that about anyone from '70.

geez... my usaa rate for home is $5k a year, with $500 deductible, $2k wind/hail, and $600k rebuild cost. That is also with their 'home protector' (additional 25% of dwelling coverage, in case natural disaster causes a rebuild spike)

You have a bigass house or what?

I'm close to 8k per year with USAA for homeowners insurance the Houston area. I've looked at switching multiple times and struck out on anything more than a few hundred dollar savings. This past year Liere could not provide me a quote from any of their insurers. Not on the coast. Not in a flood zone. Just a normal suburban neighborhood. I do believe most people are underinsured for the actual cost of a rebuild. Custom rebuilds would easily exceed $200 a square foot.

I'm a 27 year member with USAA and a third generation member. It really meant something at one time to be a member, I started my own account when I graduated from A&M and joined the military.

I've recently started looking around, I don't really want to switch but USAA is high enough now to where I'm not sure it makes sense to stay with them.

Their banking is also terrible. Even the big banks (Chase, Wells Fargo, etc.) have higher rates on savings / checking accounts.

I just got an auto insurance quote from geico just for giggles.

At first came it in a couple hundred less a month, but then I adjusted all the limits and deductibles to match what I have with usaa, and it was within about $10.

It did however prompt me to adjust some of those limits and deductibles. I ended up shaving off $140 a month by doing so.

F4GIB71: I do understand your reluctance to give props to the class ahead, have never knowingly said anything good about the Class of 69, a very poor class I might add (LOL)! Thanks for the remembrance! Been lots of years since any of us heard that 'Howdy Mr. So and So Sir' called out. Those were the days, however.

As with many of the Posters here, been with USAA so long it kinda hurts to think about switching, although, I do not think they would notice. That said, it maybe time to check around.

I've been with USAA since age 16, a long time, and have banking, auto and life, and homeowners through them. Get my auto loans for them when needed. Pretty much all my finances other than retirement accounts.

I shopped around last year and got quotes that were higher, around the same, and lower but not so much lower that it was worth the hassle of switching over. I did change some deductibles and coverages on homeowner and auto policies to lower cost since overall it had gone up more than I wanted to accept. I may have cut back my coverages too much to be honest, with the hope that "nothing will happen". At that point, I don't feel very "insured".

Does any company really care anymore?

I have been with them since '91 and yes I'm sure I could probably save few bucks by shopping but that's a pain in the ass. They have never not come through quickly when I had a claim. It's kinda like how I only buy Michelin tires from Discount Tire. Until they let me down I'll pay a little more.

Do you mind sharing your self-insurance strategy?

I'm going liability only (keeping high limits with umbrella on top) on my car insurance at renewal in a few days. I'll save $9,371 per year which is going in an investment account specifically for insurance.

Lifelong USAA member. Close to 20 years at this point and have always been happy with them. Was curious though so went and checked with GEICO and got a quote.

  • Vehicle insurance only
  • Impeccable driving record
  • Less than 15K miles driven annually
  • Comparable plans

I have been paying a consistent $585 every six months for about a decade with USAA. Not terrible I always though so never second guessed it.

GEICO quoted today $273 for same plan every six months. That is....substantial. And unfortunately laid off currently so truly having to pay attention to the little things like this now. Over half the difference. Maybe not in absolute numbers per se compared to some here but when looking at the percentage...makes me wince. I am paid up till June with USAA, at which point I will be switching. Already set a reminder for June.

I am finally paying attention to that saying, "Insurance is a commodity. Treat it as such."
