She has seemed lost this season I'm rooting for her, but her effort defensively is annoying. Been a handful of times this game that she's let people blow right past her

Defense is what frustrates me the most. There is no excuse for losing your man and not blocking out. Just being outplayed right now.

Not a great game, but I guess we learn from here. Defense has got to play better.

I agree on the timeouts. The defense needs to be emphasized since Joni knows the claim we would shoot quickly meant turnovers and rebounds. We had two more turnovers than they did and they also beat us on rebounds though the margin was exactly one.

It was a decent showing and congrats to Rice on opening with six wins and zero losses for the first time ever. I think everything we saw tells us this team will have a trajectory we enjoy. And if Joni is half the coach Gary is (which I believe she is and more) we will see them get better every single game.

I'm more surprised that I saw ZERO zone in the game. I understand what Joni's is trying to do. Play the system and drive it home to the younger players so they know what to expect moving forward. The scramble on defense costed us late I guess, now I'm looking at 7-5 going into SEC play @ SC where it will get ugly.

It seemed as if we were playing chess and they were playing checkers. Honestly, we were lucky it was as close as it was.

Also, why didn't we foul and make it a FT shooting game late? Seems like we just gave up.

I definitely don't think we gave up. I don't think that's in Joni Taylor's vocabulary. We were already without the services of G Kay Kay Green. G McKinzie Green was clearly hobbled with what looked to be a foot or ankle injury, but continued to play. We had more to lose than gain by extending the game at that point, imo. I think letting the game play out at the end was the smart thing to do.

It didn't help that the back up point guard fouled out of the game which made Green have to stay in when clearly she shouldn't.
We should have made them beat us from the line as they were just as bad as we were from the line each about 60-70%
We didn't have to have someone to bring it up that was injured and isn't a shooting threat. We have to foul or play hard nose defense and get some shooters to shoot.

I think we will be much better in next few weeks. How that translates in the SEC is a unknown right now

My observation is this. I hear the players say they want defense to be it's identity until the offense comes along. That isn't happening at all right now. I don't know if it's not buying in or just plain lack of effort. It's obvious to me that is what is being taught/stressed in practice because of the interviews after games.. On the offensive side of the ball they want to play fast, score in 8 seconds. That isn't happening either. If the 1, 2 or 3 get the rebound, why can't they push the ball up the floor to probe the offense, if nothing is there pull it back and run the offense. I have no problem with the offense that is being implemented, it looks like they are robots instead of bball players. I see players setting screens, posting up, running through screens, but don't receive the pass when they are open. I see back cuts, cuts to the middle and post-ups from your 2 guard that could be easily added to the sets but it seems they are looking for that one option instead of seeing what the defense is giving you.

All these things are fixable if the players have truly bought in. We do have a young team with Tineya and McKinzie learning the pg position. They will be critical to how far this team goes simply because they run the offense and make decisions with the ball in their hands most of the time, which is the only reason I'm pointing them out specifically. If this team doesn't start playing for each other a long season is ahead, but I'm hopeful.

maybe she wants to shoot within 8 seconds of getting it past midcourt but we dont have the shooters right now at the collegiate level

We will struggle this year no doubt losing Nixon hurts as this team is dfeinately needing a ball handler who can be poised with the ball and can make points as well

But the best potential players are young and the % spot by committee wont be bad but there isnt one 5 on the roster that can give significant minutes in a row

if they accept the position by committee we could be in good shape
