Phil could never catch Tiger so he wants his legacy to be transforming the Tour. Looks like it will blow up in his face. That's my theory anyway.
I guess it depends on how you look at it. He basically said he was leveraging the SGL to extract changes from the Tour. While you can disagree with his methods, sounds like he may have been able to do just that.

True but in doing so he's done a ton of damage to his reputation. Not sure he needed to go scorched earth on the league that's helped make him a multi-millionaire.

I agree. But it looks like he may have succeeded in his goals with the Tour. And time will tell if he's able to rehabilitate his image. Just for starters, the timing of the release of the comments is curious, considering they were supposedly made last year. Phil may come out and say he approved their release to bring everything to a head while the Tour could still prevent the defections. In short, a bunch of dudes were ready to leave and it is only because of Phil pulling the pin on this grenade that it didn't happen. Phil's both the villain and the hero!

This will become old new very quickly if it peters out like it appears it's doing. Wont end up damaging for him in the long run

I know nothing but why would the Tour diminish the value of its fall events to the sponsors and players. Let me reiterate I know nothing but I would be surprised if that happened.

Players want an off season, at least the big dogs do. A lot don't play events in the fall or very few and with those getting full FedEx points they've felt the need to play so they don't get behind.

I'd like to see them go back to having the season start at Kapalua in January and end with the Fedex Cup. The last three months of the year can be for exhibitions and a mini-season where people can play their way onto the Tour for the next year.

Yeah I'm glued to watching football anyway in the fall unless the Ryder Cup is playing. Sucks for Houston though if this goes through like rumored.

If it's a dire money situation for Phil, he's not going to benefit from changes made to the Tour. With the exception of the PGA Champ (big exception, I know), he hasn't played great golf the last couple of years.

I think "getting concessions" was a way for him to back out and declare victory. I don't know if he heard from his sponsors and they said they weren't subsidizing blood money, or what happened, but this is weird timing for sure.

I have been a huge Phil fan for the last 30 years and was always more pro-Phil than Tiger. However, I've always had a fear that he had a bit of David Sims (from Tin Cup) in him and these last couple of weeks have thrown me for a loop.

He blocked all the No Laying Up guys on social media so he doesn't handle criticism very well. I hope he does a long sit down interview with someone soon to put things back together.

Alan Shipnuck has an unauthorized biography on Phil coming out. Apparently there are other grenades in it and this was one of them. Dennis Walters has one coming out with Phil info too.

That seems contrary to what's best for the majority of PGA Tour players. Homa, Gooch, Rory and Hovland won last fall so it was pretty good for fans. If this is what they do it will cost a lot of players trying make their way money and opportunities.

If anyone wants to take off time they're free to do that.

It seemed directed at the Saudi investors who he essentially called killers and scary mother****ers, and some of it also seems directed at his sponsors and business partners. All of whom he's managed to embarrass

Bingo. That statement was half please don't fire me sponsors and half what I said was bad but it was meant for good.

I think he has equity in Mizzen & Main, so we may still be stuck with these. Awesome shirts though btw

Once again, why I hate modern sports, society, image, etc. So many hollow apologies aimed at protecting public perception and damage control because of how things turned out.

If a number of other top players would've signed on to the Saudi league, Phil and his publicist never give his words or actions a second thought.

You don't need time away to decompress, grow and learn. You want to quell the ire of the golf media, then come back and flash your thumbs up and a cheesy grin. Then you'll hopefully place well in an exciting spectacle of a tournament, which you can conclude by answering questions about your 'come to Jesus' experience and how much of a better man you are, and how grateful you are to compete against the best in the world.

Everyone can swoon and caress the new narrative, and this whole thing will be forgotten.

On the flip side of why I sometimes love modern sports, Rory McIlroy stepped up to a presser and eviscerated one of the legends of the game, and a guy who was at the top of the sport just 8 or 9 months ago.

I'm still not exactly sure what people are mad at. Is it that he flirted with the SGL? If it's that, shouldn't everyone be mad at a lot of guys? Is it because he was one of the ringleaders? Is it because he said the quiet part out loud by talking about the Saudis? Is it because he admitted it was primarily about leveraging the Tour?

Not like that you numbnutz...

They probably all jumped on the bandwagon behind Phil at first. Phil being Phil said what he said thinking some key players were behind him... Only to have it splattered all over his face.
