Boomers have never created a problem they couldn't blame on millennials

I genuinely still don't know what the apology was for and what he is losing sponsors for. Is it for saying that the Saudis are scary MFers? Is that the "offensive" line?

He admitted to leading a charge to disrupt and/or sabotage the PGA tour and arrogantly took credit as being the leader of the charge. He also openly admitted to financing lawyers to draft documents around the move, seemingly flaunting his connection to the SGL when many of his peers who may have been interested in the league did not want that stuff made public. It also puts the PGA tour in a very weird spot as to how to deal with him (and some others behind the scenes).

His comments came off as if it was purely about money. While I'm not dense enough to think money isn't the primary factor for all of them, his delivery was awful.

To make matters worse, he basically **** all over his new investors/golf partners unintentionally while trying to take a shot at the PGA at the same time.

No win situation for his sponsors. Especially when most of the golf community took his comments the way they did and expressed themselves the way they did.

Eamon Lynch continues to push the narrative that Phil needs cash and that's why he was so aggressive about this entire league. I'm guessing Phil's comments sound a bit weird now but may make more sense the more we find out more in the the coming months.

In simple terms, Phil lost the war when he basically said "yeah the saudis are repressive and kill people, but we are being tested unfairly and they have lots of money". It was beyond tone deaf and if there was any backing internally he wrecked it, and did it as a self proclaimed leader.
Then Johnson, Mcilroy and Dechanbeau hung him out to dry and he was left to try and defend the indefensible.

Even in his statement it was all about generalities, didn't really even own up to the real problems. We will see who of his sponsors is next to act or whether they stay with him.

Sponsors dropping him is joke. He'd been better off punching his wife in the face than opening his mouth I guess.

And I totally agree with posters above about him getting hung out to dry. All those guys got cold feet and left him hanging and 30 years of kissing babies and giving thumbs up went down the drain.

He was apparently the leader of the pack of a quiet movement, opened his mouth to boast about it while ****ting on their current means of payment (PGA) AND called out the investors of said movement for being ruthless murderers and admitted he may not even want to make the move if the leverage enough forces change.

How can some of you not see how bad of a move that was? Of course they left him out to dry.

No **** it was a bad move. No one is saying it's not but those guys had no idea he said that until Shipnuck spilled the beans and they all jumped ship because it looked bad.

You can't publicly excuse or rationalize potentially signing with a murderous repressive regime for money, essentially declaring himself a leader etc, as a 50 something whose days of making your sponsors, including KPMG big money are now 10 years ago or more, one great tournament aside,
Phil wildly overplayed his hand and perceived position and got smacked down by basically everyone including his peers. Hard to feel too sorry for him.

Phil's arrogance got the best of him. He was the one who reached out to Shipnuck knowing full well that Shipnuck was writing a book about him.

And maybe he doesn't have as many friends on tour that he thought he had.

People care about their bank accounts and reputations more than their tour friends.
Phil learned that lesson this week.

It also explains why the backlash against Phil was so strong. They were already close to getting what they were wanting, and he was out there potentially messing it up.

He was openly ****ting on the pga tour while openly aligning himself with Saudi Arabia. I'm glad these sponsors have more of a backbone to drop him and threaten to stop other players than the NBA had about china.

I've posted a couple times now, basically saying I'm not sure exactly what Phil is apologizing for. Let me clarify my own question by saying that I totally understand why everyone is mad at him and I understand what he should be making a statement for. What I'm saying is that when I read his statement, I can't tell exactly what he is feeling bad about. Does that make sense? Is he apologizing for using insensitive words about the Saudis? Is he apologizing for saying harsh things about the PGA tour? That's what I'm having trouble understanding, is his own mindset in all of this right now. To me, the apology seems really long-winded and really vague and I'm not sure what it is he is apologizing for. And I'm not sure which angle of all this is the angle that is making sponsors drop him.

I think its clear from his statement that he isn't apologizing and doesn't feel bad about anything. Maybe thats the point.

1) He blamed Shipnuck
2) He called the Saudi's visionaries
3) He blamed the TOUR once again
4) He is the victim and the hero in all this

Who was hurt or offended by his words/actions? If the SGL had happened, the other tour players who weren't getting big pay days and may depend on the TOUR for their own success. People who rightfully hate the Saudis and everything they stand for who saw one of the stanchions of American golf align themselves with our enemy.

It would be like it Wayne Gretzsky said he wanted to go play in a USSR hockey league. Maybe not the best example since hes Canadian but you know what I mean.

There's a difference in having your shirts and hats sponsored by an apparel brand that does business in China, and the equivalent of taking hundreds of millions of dollars directly from Xi's personal private company.

And I'm as anti-China as they come and hate the hypocrisy and silence of companies like Nike/Apple/NBA, etc.

I haven't heard any of the golf media presently nor previously denounce China and its human rights violations when they hosted the WGC events for all those years. Yeah, the Saudis are awful, but why have they remained silent in criticizing that regime? Very selective with their criticism.

It's actually a good analogy. Hard to put into words how much the Canadians hate Russian hockey. Gretzky going to play their would have meant exile.

This is a list of Canada's biggest hockey wins, see how many times Russia or the USSR come up. That one at number one is absolutely legendary in Canada.

I've read insinuations this morning that FIGJAM's self-imposed exile is actually a suspension from the Tour in disguise similar to DJ's previous leave of absence to work on "personal growth."

Phil should've known better but his ego got in the way.
