More from Shipnuck on Phil.

From the article:

"Professional golfers take tons of money from oppressive regimesnot only the UAE and Saudi Arabia but China as well. All of these players ritualistically talk about "growing the game" and speak in other established code so they get away with it. Phil was simply too blunt."

Yes, that's the entire point. Sponsors are going to be hesitant to stand by someone when they are making comments in the way Phil was.

The comments about what he left out of the book are interesting.

He has made comments like that on twitter about being the ultimate secret keeper (or something like that) at this point because of what people told him off the record about Phil.

I don't know…kind of a dewsh move on the writer to imply there's more dirt but not give specifics…if you're not going to write about it then why mention it?? All that to say I'm sure there is more dirt on Phil…

Super ***** move. Off the record is off the record. Now you just leave a wide range of speculation

He's definitely a *****. He's trying to sell a book and is using this to generate more interest. He also clearly has grudges against some of the subjects he writes about. I imagine he was beat up a lot as a child.

yeah the part in his Q&A where he stumbles all over himself talking about how he is the center of the story and wanted no part of that....**** I haven't viewed him as the center of the story at all.

It's like he's trying to force a Pete Rose/Jim Gray moment when there really isn't one.

And the part about it causing pain for others. I think a lot of people will take that to mean infidelity.

About as interesting as the message board poster who says he has info but can't share on the boards. The important part is you know that he knows though.

I think he only said that to disprove Phil's assertion that his comments were made off the record. If he didn't care whether comments were made on- or off- the record, then he would've released those details because they were way more damaging than his thoughts about the Saudi league.

Yes, its obvious Phil is getting what he's getting now because of how he handled the situation.

The implicit part of that is if he follows the typical script as others, no sponsor jumps ship.

Foolishness for Phil, hypocrisy for the establishment.

I think Shipnuck was trying to defend himself against the "off-the-record" accusation by Phil, but I don't think he came across great by saying that he has waaaay bigger secrets that he is keeping. Should have just said that hes been a journalist for 30 years and has always respected off-the-record conversations protocol.

Call me crazy, but partially disclosing someone else's off the record comments seems like a shaky way to prove you dont disclose off the record info. It tells me he conveniently chooses afterward what is off vs on

And while Phil's comments are pretty rough, I would be curious about the full context in which they were said. It's still not a good look, but I also don't doubt that Shipnuck selectively pulled out what he needed to emphasize the shock factor

He could have just as easily said that there are plenty of things Phil told him off the record that will not be in the book. However, when you say that there are scandals much bigger than the current one that you won't mention because it's too personal. That's a D-bag move.

I read that as Phil was behaving like Tiger and nailing a bunch of ugly Waffle House waitresses. Could easily be wrong, but the "too personal" aspect tends to lead you in that direction.
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I didn't read the waffle house route, I read it more the "wife of an executive at Callaway/KPMG" route if he was alluding to infidelity.

Totally think he's alluding to affairs which would destroy his doting husband/family man lifestyle he portrays. Phil should know better than to run his mouth like that even if a reporter claims its "off the record". And people thought Tiger had an ego. Sheesh.

Love that guy. I'm still trying to figure out how Phil thinks anything could be off the record when he's the one that initiated the conversation with the writer.

I think it's as simple as FIGJAM couldn't resist the temptation to tell people how great he is. He saw himself as the puppetmaster of this whole thing and was dying to take credit.

Saudi Tour is re offering some players that ended up saying no on first offer

Have not looked into the legal merits of the Tour's threatened ban so I have no idea if it would hold up in court. Although I've seen articles suggesting it would.

The other huge issue is what the majors do. Players do not want to be frozen out of the majors.
Aggie369
How long do you want to ignore this user?

They can't be frozen out of majors

The only way they would be out of majors is if Saudi doesn't get enough high quality players because then they would lose world ranking points. But PGA Tour has no control over any of the 4 majors

I realize the PGA doesn't control them but they do have a lot of sway and a lot of the qualifiers for the majors are based on tour performance. While it's still an open question as I understand it, it's possible the Tour convinces the majors and/or the OWR to not take these events into account and prevent a player from qualifying through these events.

And, to be clear, I'm not talking about revoking already earned entry. I'm talking about no means of getting in future majors through the Saudi tour. Again, as I understand it, this is still an open question.

all it takes will be a couple top 10 players of the world to commit to the LIV league and the PGA tour will drop all this "suspended for life" BS. .....you really think if say Spieth, DJ, and JT all decide they want to play the other tour some the PGA tour will kick them out F No?! PGA tour relies on sponsorship money. Big name players go hand in hand with that. Good luck telling AT&T Spieth isn't allowed to play in their own tournament at the pro am at Pebble Beach.
