It doesn't take a genius to see the hypocrisy in this situation from the very beginning.

Maybe I need a megaphone like Clay Travis.

Of course there is some hypocrisy. And Nike other organizations are attacked daily over it, no one is defending Nike as far as I know.
There's also a world of difference between profiting on the Chinese market as a relatively small portion of your business like Apple or the NBA, and essentially publicly publicly saying you would gut an American institution like the PGA in favor of one run by the Saudis.
To give an example, the reaction nationally would be outrage if Tim Cook said tomorrow that he was going to go run Sina Weibo and compete directly with American tech firms. He would be a pariah.
Just as it was, with a slightly different example, with Eileen Gu choosing to compete for China over the US. She took massive backlash in the US for that.
When you harm American interests it's a very different paradigm.

People can make all the excuses in the world for him, he completely misread the room. Others players reactions, public reactions, political reactions etc.

I'm not making any excuses for Phil. Go back and actually read the posts about him.

As far as the 'world of difference' comment, I addressed that early in the thread - it comes down to what you value and how much integrity you want to have. The most accurate thing you said was the point about harming American interests - and ultimately that is what it is about.

Brandel and any other self righteous talking head doesn't care about Jamal being chopped up by the Saudis, no more so than they care about China enslaving and potentially organ harvesting a group within the population.

As far as Nike being attacked daily, definitely not in the golf world, and not to a degree where they suffer substantial consequences - simply because of the side they are aligned with. As of yet in this situation, I haven't seen anyone in golf media have to make a major defense of Nike, because Clay is the first one on the national stage I've noticed to bring it up. The past week Golf Channel has consisted of this parade of support for the PGA tour, and Lebron crypto commercials.

I was speaking more about Clay than you or anyone else here. Should have been clear.
He's a political carnival barker with a megaphone. Don't even care which side of the aisle he's on, he just gets tiresome. I feel the same way on the other side with folks like Stephen A and anyone else's who works to make the "facts" fit their POV.
But to the original point, yes I was saying it's a different animal when you harm the US. That's what Phil failed to account for. Along with overestimating his own power and value within golf.
I will leave my contributions to this thread there.

Kind of funny. "I have never taken any action to entertain the idea of joining the Saudi tour.... other than me and my team researching the possibility of joining it and actually meeting with the Saudi tour people."

Phil and KPMG were perfect other. Both were once great but never the best and neither will likely ever win again

Perhaps, but he may have a point. If he can show that the PGA Tour threatened life time bans, he may have a great court case that the PGA Tour is breaking antitrust laws.

Love the letter.

Never been a fan of Greg Norman. He's tried this before with the World Tour and got his ass kicked by Tim Finchem or Dean Beaman.

However, if the PGA did threaten with a life time ban, then it's a dick move. And the most tour guys including the top players do want to protect themselves.

I respect Phil and Greg for what they did. It's the male "you want me to do what? **** you I quit" attitude.

Of course Phil now looks like an ass.

In the end, the group with the bigger legal funds will win. I guess the under dog is the Saudis as it appears. But are they that interested in golf???

Just goes to show that you should never apologize. Once you apologize everyone has a free shot to kick you while you're down.

The media was full blown on protecting the PGA tour because A. It's their bread basket and B. The media hates Saudi Arabia for what they did to one of their own.(not getting into that as im not educated enough on it.).

Phil and Greg had an uphill fight when the media is on the other side.

Another funny note. Callaway drops Phil for wanting to join the Saudi league yet all of their clubs are made in China.

It'd be funny if it were true but that's not why they dropped him. Masterful job conflating though

Why did they drop him?
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Because his comments made him toxic right now. They have relationships all across golf with multiple companies including the PGA Tour to consider. Had Phil said nothing to Shipnuck and still led a quiet charge to go to the Saudi league in a more professional way he wouldn't have lost any of his sponsors.

Fair enough. Callaway drops Phil for comments made about Saudi atrocities while also trying to use said leagues leverage to reshape the PGA tour. Which is funny because Callaway makes their clubs in China which has committed and is committing genocide.

We don't really know why he was dropped. For instance, there's a real possibility that KPMG dropped him because he insulted the Saudis and they have business interests there. They would never come out and say that, but it's certainly possible.

I had lunch with an old buddy who's a partner at KPMG yesterday and we were talking about this. I asked if he was dropped because he wanted to go to Saudi or because he said bad things about Saudi.

He said, "I know! We can't figure out what move got him dropped."

My guess is that's just the way KPMG wants it.

More ties cut today. Seems like an extreme overreaction, but that's how we roll in these cancel times. We cancel without even being entirely sure why we are cancelling. Kind of pathetic in its own way

This isn't canceling. It's basic business. Nobody is leading a lynch mob against him. Phil simply isn't liked right now due to his own doing so there's no reason for sponsors to keep showering him with money. And Callaway will be back with him after he worms himself out of the current situation.

What you're really seeing are companies who have been looking for a convenient way to drop their sponsorship anyway (or lower the price of it) without bad press.

A few will come back with reduced deals more in line with champions tour players. That's what he is now.

Not sure if I agree with this. If you haven't heard from him lately... He won the PGA last year

Up until this recent situation Phil was probably still a top 5-10 most marketable personality in golf even at his age.

And he still can be again...but in the short term nobody wants to be in the Phil Mickelson business and given how he's acted I can fully understand that.

He's paid to represent the companies on the PGA Tour. All he's done is taken several steps to undermine the very platform that he's being paid to represent on. It has nothing to do with Saudia Arabia, or China, or whatever whataboutism people want to try to attribute it to. He probably could've gotten away with it if he hadn't gone and run his mouth to Shipnuck. No one is jumping the gun. If I were his sponsor, I'd drop him too.

The only time he's paid to represent the tour, besides residual retirement is when he's performing. Otherwise he's paid by his sponsors. The whatabiutism was strictly related to Callaway where their clubs are made in a country that kills people by the hundreds of thousands. So yes I'm calling out the moral high road that Callaway thinks they have.

If the speculation that Phil was looking to either go to or leverage the SGL into more money due to financial trouble, he really screwed himself.

Now, he's losing the regular paychecks from the sponsors, he's not really welcome on the PGA tour right now and he burned the bridges to the Saudi tour.
