exactly. He doesn't really believe that. No golfer in the world would say the PGA is better than the masters. US Open and the Open, I can see. But the PGA better than Augusta? please.

maybe AGNC already told player he wont be an honorary starter this year and this his is backhanded way of talking down to them?

It's got a better/stronger field but that's it...I don't really enjoy watching it at all

Ironic coming from Gary Player who is pretty far down on my list when it comes to iconic/legendary golfers.

It's like, his opinion, man. While i have a different ranking, to each their own. No sweat off anyone's back.

1 - Masters

2a - US Open

2b - The Open

2c - PGA

I probably put The Open ahead of the US Open whenever it's played at the Old Course or Carnoustie.

I enjoy the PGA just as much as The Open most years. It's the deepest field and usually played on a great golf course that's not tricked out. Sure, I can see why most feel it's just another tournament, but I can assure you the players certainly don't feel this way.

Sounds like the PGA needs to be played at TPC Sawgrass for you guys to enjoy it. Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar and every other golfer would gladly trade their Players Championship for a Wanamaker trophy.

Gary Player is one of the few players with a career grandslam. That's including 3 Masters championships. The guy can say and think whatever he wants about the Masters.

I think PGA Championship should embrace non standard courses. The Ocean Course a couple years ago was a breath of fresh air. They need something to differentiate themselves as they're clearly the lowest rated major.Heck match play for the top 4 after a few rounds would be fun but they'd never do it.

PGA use to have a match play element and I think adding it back would be awesome.

I guess I'm the odd man out because I have never really seen the appeal of the Masters.

I'm with you. It's a great tournament, but I like the US Open and The Open better. The Masters is a beautiful, super manicured course with slightly over the top pageantry. It's fun to watch, but it doesn't appeal to me as much as the brutal challenge the players face in the US Open or links golf in the British Isles.

The Masters is all about the course whereas the US Open is all about the field.

For me it matters a lot where the majors are played that year. Love when they're played at public courses or venues you don't see as often. PGA at Ocean Course for example or US Open at Bethpage.

Some of the replies are odd and make me wonder if posters actually read what Player said. He never said anything bad, disrespectful, or negative about the Masters. He simply said The Open and The US Open were older tournaments, and that was why he ranked them higher. The man after all has 3 green jackets. I don't see what he said as attention seeking or angry with the powers that be at all.
