It's just going to keep leaking, and you are going to damage your system to the point where it suddenly won't cool AND you'll need a new system. Most likely in the middle of a 100-deg 10-day spell in July of 2025 and you'll be waiting 5-days to get 3 bids, all of which will be 30% higher because you're desperate and they're busy and have 10-paying customers in line in front of you that just want their house cold again.mattandersen2 said:

My AC is a R22 system and is 21 years old. 3 years 9 months ago I put a leak detector and I think? a leak sealant in the unit. I never found a leak. I got the license online and bought 19 of R22 for $108. $10.80 per pound. It has tripled in price in 4 years. Still I was quoted $100 per pound at the time by a service tech. It took 9.2 pounds to charge it.
Question now: It won't cool any today.
1) Get a new system?
2) Try DIY again with a potential of wasting say $350 on R22 and supplies.
My house is in Conroe and is 1,500 square feet. What brand, tonnage, and price range would total replacement be?
My thoughts are total replacement because it's 21 years old. I'm not sure how to check if the compressor is even working if I don't recharge it and if I recharge it, I'm spending money on R22 and if the compressor is bad, I'm going to have to figure out a way to recapture that R22.
I assume that if I buy a brand new unit that uses a different type of refrigerant that I'm going to have to replace something in the attic?
