Nice job. Haters gonna hate. Nothing like the sense of accomplishment doing something yourself. Especially in your youth when you have all the energy in the world. Every so often I think I can still do something like lay a couple yards of topsoil or gravel by myself with just a shovel and wheel barrow and soon come to realize I need 4 hours in a hot tub and a handle of whiskey the next day and I am only 43.

I don't think anyone was hating. Just saying it would be extremely difficult. So with that said though….

1. How'd the finish turn out?
2. Was it worth 2k savings?
3. Is your wife ok with how it turned out?
4. Would you do it again?. lol

Congrats!

Based on his tendency to do the opposite of the advice here, I doubt it

It's his house and his slab. Does it really matter if you doubt it?

Congrats! Im sure yall are a bit sore today, but you learned a ton and got it done! From the comments, we seem to have a bunch of aggies who pay for everything and don't DIY.

Ok I'm back. I had lots of help so don't think I did this all myself. I also watched a million hours of YouTube.

I did listen to y'all and went with a truck. It just gave us more time to get it level and get the finish right. There's still a few funky spots but it turned out great regardless. My son has already moved in. Bonus pic of my fire pit I'm cleaning up

My hands and wrists hurt just thinking about all of those bags.

A couple of years ago I did a 8x12 slab for an outdoor shed. I had done my fair share of concrete work in my lifetime. Planned everything to the tee, wasn't in a hurry, it was going to take what it was going to. One day I framed out the slab and tied rebar. The next day I had all materials delivered. (I would have killed my self just loading/unloading 60lbs, I had rented a drum mixer as another means to not wear my self out. Even with all of that planing, pacing, I still became the weak link. Man those 60lb bags just murdered me. Every bag I picked up seemed heavy than the previous one. I was miserable.

Luckily my son; a string strapping young man bailed me out. The two of us got the slab poured in one very, very long day.

…that will be my last slab I do.

Looks pretty good, color me impressed.

Good call on the truck, at the end of it all do you think there was that much difference in cost vs having a pallet of bags delivered?

Hate to lie but we sucked down Modelos instead of Milwaukee's.... Felt fitting for the job.

My rough math says it was about 200 dollars in difference. Well worth it.

Curious what is your final $/sf?
When I did mine (20x10) it was
$800 for half load of concrete
$800 in labor (4men x5hours)
$300 pump
$100 rebar

My subcontractor partner covered the labor and materials so I made out like a bandit just paying for the pump, but I was prepared to pay $2000 or $10/sf. Much lower than going rate for that small of a job.
The laborers also ended up bringing a plate compactor and compacted the 6" rock that I already put down, so that was a bonus.

I was 6" min, (7-8" in some spots). I was putting a 30klb hottub on it so I didn't care if I overshot it. 4" would have reduced it to $8/sf or less.

And you can't put a price on the "I did that" value...

I'm hoping he meant $2,000. Aint no way it's worth $200 in savings

I spent more for a truck compared to what mixing bags would have been. 200 dollar difference. All in all, I came out at 1300 bucks. More than i thought but quotes ranged from 3100 to 4K so I did save ALOT.

My mistake, didn't realize you were replying to a post saying the $200 difference was in the truck vs. bags. Thought it was $200 diy vs. just having someone do it

Def. cheaper for bags on smaller jobs, but the truck comes out ahead and stays ahead as you add sf/volume.

Just fyi, you can remove those forms

Looks like a great project! A rock salt or textured finish would have looked nice.
