My go tos when I'm back in town are always Paloma Blanca (Heights) or Rosarios (South Town). Paloma Blanca is probably the most upscale out of any place mentioned on here. Nice atmosphere and some expensive dishes but many of the dishes won't break the bank.

I second everything in this entire post.

I'll back this one. It also doubles as the best brisket in town. They are up at 2 am every morning smoking briskets.

Mexican fine dining reminds me of Ernesto's.

Been a while since I've been here, but the food was great and service was very attentive. Ernesto himself makes the rounds.

Good Margarita's, ok food. I am a fan of El Chapparral on 1604 and Redland.

Enjoy the place while it's still around. I wouldn't be surprised if the state shuts the place down in the next year or two.

Yep.

At first they ignored the warnings and blew off the state, then they tried to fix it (incorrectly) and now they're pretty much up **** creek.

I'll add La Fonda on Main for this thread, I still like that place.

They "fixed" it, but it's still real bad. Probably as bad as it was before.

La fogata is terrible. I'd rather go to taco cabana. However I'm surprised by the el pollo place. I drove by on Rigsby last week and it wasn't as bad as it has been but then again I've only driven by 2x in the last year. The last time I could barely see the road.

I have some out of town friends that always want to go to La Fogata.

For the life of me I can not understand it. Expensive and marginal food at best.

FWIW, La Fogata, El Mirasol, So Luna Cafe are all sister restaurants. I believe the same can be said for Paloma Blanca and the Al Dacos. Also, just double-checked that Acenar is a spinoff of Rosarios, we loved their 3 salsa appetizer, but the food is comparable to Fonda-Main or Rosarios-pretty darn good still, but perhaps not 15 dollars a plate worthy. Love Rosario's, but menu limited, only crave them for their *****ly pear margarita. Mi Tierra is underrated, but most people order the cheaper entrees and come away with a tourist trap opinion. Do luv me some Beto's, but the appetizer aspect is average and not conducive to a total package.

For budget food or drive-thru, I'm partial to Tacos N Salsa, Las Palapas, Thousand Oaks Cafe. My craving this year is dominated by El Buccanero's-estes si con mariscos, no chinganderas-no need to buy the pricey entrees, the small mixed ceviche (fish and shrimp) is delish and cheap.

Hate to say it, but I've tried 95 percent of the recommended San Antonio restaurants for Mexican, and I'll still opt out for Goode Company Taqueria mesquite grilled enchiladas with mozarella out of Houston if I had the option. And in second place, I'd still go outside of SA-Uncle Julio's (Fort Worth closest I think) Matamoros plate with a mix of Fajitas and mesquite grilled froglegs. In other words, the SA mystique of great Mexican food remains overrated, IMHO.

Like, don't love Los Barrios. Saw Tim Duncan there once (Redland). They have a great appetizer taco: carne asada taco with lots of fixins for a cheap price if your appetite is light. Great chips and salsa starter. Great chimichurri (similar to Beto's). Enchiladas are a disappointment (tried several), but some of their nicer grilled meat stuff is worth the trip. Appetizer options are good, so a great place for drinks and a light meal.

They have certainly lost a bit. I used to go there a lot and loved it, especially the puffy tacos. Last time I had them (few months ago) they were pretty bad. Mushy and really bland.

La Fogata is not a sister restaurant to El Mirasol and So Luna. It was bought by the group that owns Silo restaurants and they have upped the food quality substantially.

Your story checks out. I wasn't aware of the sale, know when it happened? Haven't been in about 3 years so; if it was recent, then maybe I need to go back. Their salsa was definitely reminiscent of the other Calvillos restaurants when we went last, still pretty good but not exceptional.

I assume La Fogata and Tomatillos were related? I always saw La Fogata shuttle buses parked at Tomatillos. Was that part of the sale too?
