We're still getting acclimated to the restaurants here in SA. It seems the best are in the Heights, downtown area?? Is that right?

Have a reservation at La Fonda for tonight. We've at Rosarios and that was pretty good. Wife's relatives are coming in from KC and we want to take them out for good authentic or good tex mex, just good food.

Thanks in advance.

If you don't mind driving to North Central SA, El Mirasol is great.

Gloria's in the Rim was good. Not fancy, but Lupe Tortilla also in the Rim as great Fajitas. Walk to Rustic for live music and drinks.

I don't know if these count as hole in the wall places, but they're some of my favorite for getting texmex. All 3 have good breakfast tacos, Bee's has better lunch than Blanco. I haven't eaten at Molino Rojo in a while.

Bee's Mexican Restaurant and Bakery
808 Lockhill Selma Rd, San Antonio, TX 78213

Blanco Cafe
1720 Blanco Rd, San Antonio, TX 78212

Molino Rojo
13032 Nacogdoches Rd # 210, San Antonio, TX 78217

Edit: I'm sorry I just realized these aren't on the side of town you were asking about. Try this:
Taqueria Augascaliente
15409 White Fawn Dr, San Antonio, TX 78255

In addition to the ones already said:

If off Broadway:

Paloma Blanca
Soluna is the sister restaurant to El Mirasol off Sunset & Broadway

1604 & Blanco there is El Mirasol

On the South side there is Nichas. We frequent there at least once every 3 weeks and it is always good

Then yes as the other poster mentioned, have a pretty lengthy list of hole in the walls if you ever need some of those

Only went to the UTSA 10 location. Barely above Taco Cabana

Terrific for a chain. Ex-girlfriend from Laredo swore by them and converted me.

Much better than Taco Cabana in my difference in opinion from the poster above.

Tacos n salsa is pretty legit. Excellent breakfast tacos and freshly made salsas. But not cheap.

Ay chiwawa imo is also pretty good.

I ate at taco palenque one time. Very unimpressed.

Totally agree with tacos n salsa. Great place.

Order Up also has excellent tacos, although they're slightly more of the gringo variety.

La Fonda is pretty bland Gringo Mex.

Rosario's is very good but you have to deal with parking issues and drive to the downtown area. It's great if you are already going down there though.

In NW San Antonio area El Chaparral in Helotes is the best. Everything on the menu is good. They also have one at Redland Rd and are building a new one in Boerne.

I was skeptical when a friend suggested Papa Nachos in the strip center where the HEB is at Boerne Stage Rd/Leon Springs area, but their enchiladas are damn good.

Taco Cabana has gone downhill. The food isn't bad but it seems like they can never keep one staffed properly.

This is a great place to take out of town guests. The food is great, the margaritas are killer, and it has a very cool and unique atmosphere. Definitely a place to check out.

We've been here for four years and have yet to find any texmex that I consider good or worth what we paid. So far Henry's Puffy Taco is the best, with Las Palapas a close second. Not even sure how it's possible for this city not to have a good place but I'm still looking.

La Fonda….don't even remember what it was but I know we ate there so that's about all I can say for that place. Just tried the Helotes Chapparal and I've tried the one on the north side of SA…both locations are ok. Not great. Not terrible. Just ok. Rosario's was not something I'd go back to. The food tasted alright but everything there the day we ate was so spicy it was nearly inedible and that's coming from me, a dude that likes ghost chilis as part of their chili. It's fine to add some heat but it should not be a crutch or to cover up for poor culinary ability.

Fogota will be next on the list from this thread. Crossing fingers it's decent.

I used to travel 95% of the time, for 12 years so I used Yelp all the time. The ratings here have been the most inconsistent when it comes to Mexican / Tex Mex and BBQ to some extent. My favorite BBQ is 2M. Haven't found a favorite Mexican place yet but will keep swinging.
Found a little whole in the wall off Vance Jackson that closes at 2. Best carne guisada I've had here.
"What country before ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure." Thomas Jefferson

Good mexican or tex-mex food in SA depends on how you are judging the menu. I have friends that judge a restaurant solely on their rice and beans, or their enchiladas. There is so much more to tex-mex and especially mexican menus across the board. I always try something different on the menu, especially if the restaurant has a specialty. Maybe a better solution might be to pick one menu item, for instance like parilladas, and let us know where your go to restaurant for the best parilladas is in town. Or what is your go to menu item and where?

Yep. There is a place near Babcock and Huebner that their hot sauce is so good it makes me want to buy a quart. Bacon-cut in small pieces w potatoes and charizo w cilantro. Good.

What places do you consider good? What dishes are your go to? Do you just try "nicer" Tex Mex places or do you try the ones with all the work trucks at lunchtime too?

I find it hard to believe you haven't found one you really like in the region that created the food
