Any good mexican foods on the west or northwest side of SA?

I think we just have to try a lot of places and find it for ourselves. This thread is a good running list to try.

Tex Mex is kind of an out of the box thing. One thing we missed from Houston was Alecias. They had awesome fresh salsa, thin chips, a green sauce if you wanted it and the best damn seafood enchiladas I'd be willing to kill a small army over. Something we can't make at home. My wife doesn't eat beef and I will eat fish and seafood so that has to be my new standard. Plus since few make it well, if we find it, that will be the place.

I think the issue is that we do cook a lot at home, every meal in fact. My 15 year old daughter bakes and my wife is an outstanding cook. So, there just aren't any places that do a lot of it better. Hamburgers, bbq, steak, tacos, chicken fried steak….we aren't going to be finding any place that does it better and we will always be disappointed by getting it somewhere and paying for it. So, Bill Millers and Whataburger will get the job done and not leave room for disappointment since the expectation is already set. The bar is set high which means it limited to things we can't or don't do well ourselves.

The only my place we've eaten over here that we truly consider the best eating experience we've ever had is J Prime. Absolutely a place I'd love to go to on the regular but we save it for special occasions since it's pricey.

I can't really answer your question. I just have to try them all and we'll know it when we find it. Everyone has different tastes. Honestly, for Mexican food, I've never in my life had better enchiladas than Los Tios as a kid in Houston. That's been my standard for them ever since and I've never been in a place in 30 years that matched them anywhere.

I'm going to keep watching this thread and keep trying places.

I have lived in SA for 17 years now. There is a lot of run-of-the-mill, generic, texmex that tastes like it was something thrown together from whatever fell off the Sysco truck with refried beans and rice. It takes a little patience and the willingness to try new things, but there is plenty of good texmex to be found in San Antonio. Places like La Fogata don't do anything unique, but their food is usually good and consistent. On the other hand, there is a little breakfast/lunch cafe on Austin Highway called Sabor de Mexico that we hit occasionally. The family that runs it makes sure to treat you right. I can't handle too much barbacoa, but my coworkers claim they make a grilled cheese & barbacoa sandwich that will make you slap your abuela. I have had the carnitas grilled cheese, and it was really good as well.

Good mexican or tex-mex food in SA depends on how you are judging the menu. I have friends that judge a restaurant solely on their rice and beans, or their enchiladas. There is so much more to tex-mex and especially mexican menus across the board. I always try something different on the menu, especially if the restaurant has a specialty. Maybe a better solution might be to pick one menu item, for instance like parilladas, and let us know where your go to restaurant for the best parilladas is in town. Or what is your go to menu item and where?
Excellent thoughts.
"What country before ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure." Thomas Jefferson

That's fair. My recommendation is don't find one you like and save yourself from the 20 extra pounds !

But some others to try out that I like are
Nichas (there's a few locations now but the OG is on the southside)
Teka Molina (greasy San Antonio staple)
El Jarro (haven't eaten there in years though)
Seafood type Mexican
Marisco Al pais (?) out 281 towards Bulverde
El Bucanero

If you haven't already try Ernesto's on Jackson Keller, i believe they do have seafood enchiladas on the menu, as well as many other dishes you will not find in other restaurants.

This is a great place to take out of town guests. The food is great, the margaritas are killer, and it has a very cool and unique atmosphere. Definitely a place to check out.

Agree. This is my spot for just that.

Margaritas on the patio when the weather is great is hard to beat

Disclaimer: I've surprised myself with my defensiveness of SA's Tex Mex food. Im not native to here and I know there's some realllly good places in Houston and elsewhere. I have no delusions of grandeur. But we live around the corner from El chap and your overall lack of appreciation for anything about it kinda chapped my hide.

You said this to some extent but not plain enough for me - I don't mean to diminish your appreciation for your home cooking but your standards are, charitably, different. One of you doesn't like beef and another of you is judging a land locked South Texas city for its abilities with sea food or some childhood memory of enchiladas. It's cool to like what you like but i don't really know why you try with your insistence on making the perfect the enemy of the pretty damn good. I'd say with your appreciation for Whataburger and Bill Miller for what they do with BBQ and hamburger, definitely stick to places with drive thrus. My husband loves the fideo with meat at Taco palenque.

Goes back to the breakfast taco thread, but I like Los Balitos tacos on Bitters. Multiple choices for different salsas. Sad that Jacalas is gone, that was puro old school San Antonio for me. I'm also from the La Fogata hood and remember eating there when it was about 6 small tables and a stand up bar.

Yep. There is a place near Babcock and Huebner that their hot sauce is so good it makes me want to buy a quart. Bacon-cut in small pieces w potatoes and charizo w cilantro. Good.

Remember the name of the place? Love me some hot sauce.

I feel like I gained 20 lbs looking at the pictures on Google. I might have to move this place to my next stop. It looks badass. Thanks for the recommendation. There are so many places to eat, it's impossible without recommendations. Thanks for that! I'll try that and Fogata!

I'm gonna pop in some more inner city options that are worth the drive in. They're all very cheap too. Great cuisine, great salsa. Many of them close at 3 so try their breakfast!

Taqueria Datapoint off Fredericksburg

Original Donut Shop (great donuts too) off Fredericksburg and Babcock

Mama's Kitchen on Hildebrand

Rolando's Super Tacos on Hildebrand

Chile, Tomate, y Cebolla on Donaldson

Regia's Cocina off Colorado (I think).
Still pissed off about the sip game? Me too. Donate to Texas Aggies United today to support championship-level rosters. https://texags.com/united/subscribe

Good choice. I'll add in Mary Lou's off Pleasanton Road by Harlandale HS. (Maps has it listed as Mary Lucas, and I can't admit I've ever paid too much attention to the sign, but I always thought it was Mary Lou's).

Just looked it up on street view and the sign does in fact read Mary Lou's

I'll have to try it next time I'm down that way.

And Nichas has a new location on west ave and rhapsody by walker ranch park. The old Taco Flats building

LaFogata has a northern location on IH-10 frontage road across from the Dominion. I have eaten at that location several times along with the Vance Jackson location. The food seems the same at both places.

Just got back from a visit to San Antonio for the first time in over 15 years. We went to El Chapparral in Helotes and I can vouch for this place. Very good food and atmosphere. BTW, I was shocked how effing big San Antonio is now.
