Moving back to the hill country and I am curious

I grew up in San Antonio until 6th grade and then moved out to the hill country until I graduated high school. That was over 20 years ago. I am moving back to the hill country and I have read/heard a mixed bag of information about San Antonio.

So how safe is it? What are the better places to go? Where should I avoid? Is my F-150 safe or expected to get broken into? Is Sea World or Fiesta Texas worth taking the family to anymore?

I went to the shops at La Cantera about a year ago and had no issues. But the teens were quite vulgar, loud and annoying.

Just any feedback would be appreciated. I would like to know what I am getting into.

We frequent the Rim, less so La Cantera but only because we have no reason to go most of the time. We do not drive trucks. I would for sure expect your truck to be broken into anywhere along i-10 in that area. Willies in Leon Springs was hit not too long ago - several trucks broken into there during daylight. Trucks are always targeted at The Rim. I've never felt unsafe there though.

Lived here 30 years -5 minutes from the Rim etc. Never had anything stolen. Mostly tourists at LaCantera-I never have reason to go there. Rim has some nice places. Little over 2 hours to Port A. I enjoy living here

Had my F250 broken into at La Cantera three years ago. Was one of 28 Fords broken into that day around The Rim and La Cantera. Broad daylight. Have not been back

Lived here just about all my life. Never had any issues like that.

Live in Leon Springs area now. Drive a GMC 2500. Frequent the RIM, La Cantera, and pretty much everything on the north side of SA up to Boerne. Never an issue.

Don't think this area is any more or less dangerous then Houston, Dallas, etc.

Not a lot has changed from 20 years ago for areas that are good versus areas to avoid. Other than the truck theft/break-ins that are just about everywhere, I don't ever feel unsafe. Back in the day, St Mary's strip was good now I wouldn't go down there but we also don't go out a lot.

Just stay away from the bigger stores around spring break and Easter to avoid the Mexican Nationals. They are around frequently, but much more so in spring time. Just very rude and extremely impolite.

Don't do Sea World or Fiesta Texas, kids are grown and those are places to avoid for me.

Same as others. Never feel unsafe in the places mentioned. My dads new King Ranch F-150 wasn't messed with recently, but they seem to go in waves, and that's in all cities.

I don't take my F250 anywhere around the RIM / I-10 corridor. Too many 1st hand people I know with their trucks stolen.

I don't feel unsafe, but the gangs/theft rings are terrible.

Leon Valley area is also terrible.

F250 was broken into over at 281 and bitters one day during lunch and I was parked next to a ferrari. go figure. It's SA, happens everywhere. FWIW we live in Boerne as well.

My F150 was hit in multiple locations when I lived in SA. Stopped happening after moving to NB.

Some of the early posters on this thread are living in fantasy land. Crime is a real problem and getting exponentially worse. Your car will be broken into or stolen at some point. You will encounter street racing on I-10.

In other bizarre news, a few days back some guy dressed in a woman's sun dress climbed the green highway sign on I-10 right in front of The Rim and hung himself. Right over the main lanes of traffic at the start of rush hour.

Stay away from Bexar county

A warning to everyone, especially Californians: Stay far away from NB!! Nothing to see here.

Just had dinner at the Rim, and escaped unscathed.

But I walked behind a guy on his phone for over a minute. Guess he didn't find me threatening (I'm female) but I'm not even sure he knew I was behind him.

Situational awareness is a thing.

The street racing has devolved into street takeovers. Complete with gunfire. Here's an example from this year, and just a few miles south on I-10 of your highly regarded Rim area.

Your move, sheep.

Good thing you edited that before Staff saw it. This is just an internet message board man, don't take it so personal. It's ok to be wrong every once in a while.

I thought this example above would resonate with you....seeing as how it happened right outside your office window.

So it's cool I live in Fantasy Land San Antonio. Still don't feel unsafe and completely acknowledged theft. That's what happens when you live in a city so large.

As far as bizarre? Member when they could jump off the Hemisphere tower and fly? The dude that jumped off the I-10 overpass? Whack jobs are everywhere and they are going to whack job their way off this ****ty planet. Here's to hoping the do it efficiently.

Oh, and because the theater was so busy I initially was going to park at Bass Pro because there was room by the boats. But when I got out of the car, the only other vehicle around had a sunshade up but the car was running. I noped out of there and found another parking place that was more centrally located.

Again, situational awareness is a tihing.

Sounds like a lot of concerns would be solved if people ditched their Fords.

Crime is a problem here. The crime rate in SA was the highest of ANY Texas city for 2021. That's per SAPD.

But as said above, situational awareness is key. Two personal incidents for me. SIL and her husband were eating at J. Alexander's at the Quarry earlier this year. Parked in disabled parking right by front door. Someone broke into their vehicle just feet away from front door. SAPD officer told them around 100 vehicles a day are burglarized in SA.

Early February just off Bitters west of 281 in Bluffview Estates an 80 yoa man was pulled out of his vehicle by 3 guys who beat him with a baseball bat and stole his car. Man is still in hospital. All 3 bad guys have been arrested. All 3 are 15 to 16 years old. This happened a block from my 94 year old FIL's house.

DPS friend has convinced me to start carrying. I do at times just to try and get used to it.

Two reasons pickups are broken into the most:
1. They are easier to get in to
2. They are most likely to have guns in them.

No City in TX is as safe as it used to be. That probably goes for all cities in America.

The DA, Joe Gonzales, is a friend of mine. We need a different DA. We need another Susan Reed. The "broken window" philosophy does work.

Need I remind you that my old Silverado was broken into twice? There was also the time they left it on blocks, stole the wheels, and you had to help me replace them.

First… the hill country is a meth infested sheethole. The obsession with it is odd and I grew up out there.

Second, SA is like any other city. Right now crime pays and the democrats want it that way.

Lol what a weird post. Situational awareness? This isn't Fallujah in 2014. I'm not advocating for a lack of safety, but this specific scenario is so weird to me. A dude on his cell phone in a public space now lacks awareness? Was there other people around when you followed a stranger for that long? Or did you follow a male stranger, alone, for a minute with no knowledge of his intentions? THAT sounds like a lack of awareness.

It was in a parking lot and onto a sidewalk, and I've obviously failed to convey his level of obliviousness. Yes, there were other people in the general area, but no one super close. Why didn't I pass him? Because I didn't realize I should until we were both on the (very narrow) sidewalk and my car was immediately ahead of us (?) Why didn't I go a different way? Because the shortest distance to my car out of traffic was the way he was going (?) - I can't explain the situation any better. But no, I wasn't stalking him, I was walking to my car. If our positions had been reversed I would have acknowledged his presence and changed my speed though.

Awareness of your surroundings isn't a bad thing in a parking lot, regardless of gender. It is just not a good idea to be unaware of the people around you to that extent.

There is a level of unawareness that leads to people running into stationary objects, which is how the dude was behaving. Any discussion of basic personal safety includes not being oblivious to other people and potential hazards when in a parking lot.

One other thing that I didn't mention - within the last year a woman was attacked by 2-3 men while walking in the Hobby Lobby parking lot area toward her car at the same time of day at the Rim. She was beaten - I think it was an attempted carjacking or purse snatching. So I will not apologize for being aware of my surroundings and shaking my head when others are not.

People (even those on this thread) insist that the world and my corner of it is so unsafe that one should avoid the whole city. Others responded to the incident where the lady was attacked by suggesting that women should never go to the Rim alone, etc. I don't do that either. I'm neither paranoid or overly cautious.

I do, however, stay off my phone in a parking lot, walk with confidence to get where I'm going, am aware of my surroundings such that I know if anyone is close to me, get in my car and immediately lock the doors and leave the parking space.

I've lived in San Antonio for almost 20 years and have never felt unsafe. I've never had my truck (Chevy) broken into. Traffic is annoying and there are some pretty stupid people here but stupid people are everywhere. The '09ers like their bubble and pretend it's perfect but it's overvalued and gets a lot more crime than where I live.

There's a lot to love about San Antonio and things that other Texas cities can't offer.

- Culture. There's a lot of state history in San Antonio. More than Houston, DFW, Austin.
- We have a great parks system. Our community and city has made outdoor spaces a priority and I like that. Plenty of places to hike and bike.
- Downtown is fun if you know the right places to go.
- We have the best A&M club anywhere. We are the only club with real property which allows us to host several events every year.
- good food, good breweries, and nice venues (Alamodome aside).
- close proximity to the coast, to Austin, and small hill country towns (Fburg, Wimberley, Dripping Springs, etc)

We moved here 3 years ago from Knoxville. We sold a vehicle to our nanny and our car insurance still is more than twice as high. A couple of my friends are state troopers. Unfortunately they have been deployed to the border but they told me over 65 vehicles are stolen everyday in SA. Kia, Hyundai are the most frequently stolen vehicles and third is the Ford 150/250. I have a 97 F250 with only 147k miles. Hasn't been stolen yet. Think I'll put a good anti theft device on it. My company vehicle was broken into right in front of a sports bar over near Alamo Ranch. They took my Briggs & Riley portfolio, laptops etc but didn't get my Colt.
