When did our white belts become light tan belts? Or is there a shortage of bleach in BCS? Noticed it is numerous pictures and then again watching the game tonight.

Are you sure you're not looking at v-1 and delta company cadets?

Tan belts are military veterans.

Yeah, they started the tan belts back around 2007 when they started Delta-Co. It's an outfit of military veterans. We always thought it was so that some pisshead didn't go off on a veteran for not whipping out or something.

Delta Company Veterans wear tan belts. You probably noticed them because they are in the front rows each game

So its basically a "don't f with me" belt for a 21 yr old, ate up, senior to recognize? Who got their ass beat to start this trend?

Here is an article in Spirit magazine about Delta Company's establishment and what it means to the Cadets in the outfit and to their fellow Cadets and students.

I wish I'd been able to come back to A&M and be in the Corps, but I finished my first BS before I separated. I'm looking at coming back as a post-bacc in a couple years, but I don't know about being in the Corps at 30.

The typical age range in Delta Company is mid 20's to mid 30's, though there are few clustered around 40. Some had been at A&M before going into the service, others served under Aggies.

really? well if that's the case I might check it out.

What is the corps position on post-baccs?

When I was in there were a few cadets in different positions that were working on things other than their BS. Most were in V1, but there was one in Sq 18.

V1 was the outfit for veterans, prior service (but not deployed), graduate students, students that were married and lived off campus, etc. Around 2007-2008 they started Delta Co which is specifically for veterans that have been deployed.

I'd probably call the Corps and ask to speak with Colonel Hawes, and talk to him about it.

that's really interesting. I didn't know there were non-undergrads in the Corps at all. How does the rank/seniority/Senior boots situation work for graduate students?

Being a graduate student technically has no bearing on rank or what class you'll be. Everyone has to spend at least one semester as a fish. Then you either continue on as a fish your second semester, or you jump ahead and catch up with whatever class you're supposed to be with. If I joined the Corps as a sophomore academically, but I knew I was going to graduate a year late, I could either spend 1 year as a fish, skip sophomore year, and catch up with my normal class year, or I could go straight through 4 years of the Corps. As a graduate student you'd have to decide whether you want to time your senior year with when you expect to graduate, or if you want to just start as a fish and keep going till either you graduate or you finish 4 years. And you'd wear your boots as soon as you become a senior, whenever that is.

I think my fish year there was one person who was a fish one semester and a senior (in boots) the next. I didn't really know him, but I'm pretty sure he was a graduate student. And every senior outranks every junior, who outranks every sophomore, who outranks every fish. So even that guy that spent one semester as a fish outranked every fish, sophomore, and junior as soon as he became a senior. But, I doubt he held any major leadership positions because 1) he became a senior second semester which is out of cycle to hold a major position and 2) with only 1 semester behind him of being a fish it'd be hard to compete with someone who has spent 2+ years in the Corps, making good grades, demonstrated leadership in other roles, etc.

Now I've been out of the Corps for more than 5 years now, so stuff might have changed on how they handle things, but I'm pretty sure there are graduate students there.

The go to office for Veterans is the Veteran Resource and Support Center. Jerry will get you routed through and to the most helpful offices depending upon the individual's particular needs. He asked me to share the following.

I would question that. When Squadron 18 was first set up for all out-of-cycle cadets in 2002, it was made clear that a cadet had to complete a minimum one full year in the Corps in order to wear boots, and I believe it was always an unwritten rule before then. I would be very surprised if the Commandant changed that.

Thanks for all the information guys! This has completely changed what I think about coming back to A&M. We'll definitely be revisiting this discussion in a year or 2.

Per Colonel Smith, noted above:
quote:
At Texas A&M, we opened the Veteran Resource & Support Center (VRSC) in 2012. Texas A&M is dedicated to "Serving Well Those Who Have Served!"

As you investigate the admissions process, here are some experts who can provide specific information: ADMISSIONS: I strongly recommend that you contact Ms. Karen Cambronero as early as possible to discuss the admissions process. She may ask a lot of questions about prior coursework, college and grades. She is a pro that can ensure you have the right information!!! 979-862-4087

Our university web page for veterans has just been updated. Go to https://veterans.tamu.edu/ for links to Veteran Admissions, Financial Aid and our office.

MILITARY BENEFITS & FINANCIAL AID: If you have questions about Financial Aid and Veterans Education benefits, I recommend that you contact our Scholarship & Financial Aid Veteran Services Office at veterans@tamu.edu or by phone at 979-845-8075.

We have a Student Veterans Association here on campus and they are very active in supporting fellow veterans. Their Face Book page is at: http://www.facebook.com/groups/TAMUveterans/ It is a closed group, so you will have to ask to join

We also have a new VRSC Face Book group at: https://www.facebook.com/TamuVeteranResourceSupportCenter

Good Lord. Fine, I'll be more specific for you. All fish wore a plain cotton black belt. All heads wore a synthetic black belt. All juniors wore a cotton white belt. All seniors wore a synthetic white belt. No one wore a tan belt or other belt outside of their class's assigned.

Sorry that I didn't feel like typing all that out. I hope you now believe me.

Tan belts are for cadets in Delta Company. You must be a combat veteran to join Delta Company.

We do take graduate students. We have a sophomore in the band who is a graduate student in Petroleum Engineer. As a fish she was in both the Band and FDT.

You must have at least 2 years remaining at A&M to join the Corps and those joining late must go thru at least 1 semester as a fish. It takes a minimum of 1 year to earn boots.

As a point of reference we had juniors join the Corps when I was a cadet and they could earn boots after one year without ever being a fish. Now they all must go thru at least one semester as a fish.

The number of cadets joining late is growing significantly. This includes transfer students, current students, TAMUG, and graduate students. We get some truly outstanding cadets joining late and they are making a significantly positive contribution to the Corps and A&M. This year's Head Yell Leader joined the Corps after his first semester at A&M and another senior Yell Leader joined late as a 30+ year old married veteran.

to be a "combat veteran" are you looking specifically for people with CABs or other proof of being involved in fighting, or are you looking only for veterans who have been deployed, as evidenced for example by a GWAT-E?

that was impossible back in the day (2004 lol). I remember some fish in the band from my class wishing they could try out for FDT. Good for her. Can't imagine juggling both though.

grad students are typically better at juggling responsibility than true freshman, that might have had something to do with it

@jonlobb- you have to have been deployed. In Delta company, you wouldn't live in the dorms unless you requested.

We had BQ's try out for the first 12th Man Kick off Team in '83. Some of them made it through Spring Practice and Fall 2 a Days. Then they had to make a decision. They all chose the band.

I am glad this thread is here because I was hoping to do the same thing. I am 26 now, about to graduate with a BS in Criminal Justice, but want to return to A&M and the Corps. I just hope that I get admitted back into school.

My son is in the Corps after he went straight into the Navy after HS. He joined DCo and lived in the corps dorms for his first semester. He left Dco and joined Sq.18 after his first semester. I believe he still wears a khaki belt and his Navy ribbons. He is 26 and a Butt, he loves the Corps, this is something he has wanted to do since Kindergarten. His sister was sq.3 class of 2008.
