Refrigerator?!?!

fish should be chilling their beers in the AC vent and enjoying it at an icy 70 degrees like me and my fish buddies did back in '99!!

Yup, the original fish fridge.
Do they even have that return vent in the renovated dorms?
No, I was in an old dorm fish to butt year and a new dorm zip year

Fish have it so easy lately - like the last 30 years. We had running water, electricity, indoor plumbing, and sometimes heat in the winter, but no AC. Heck, my dad even had those amenities.

Bottom line is.... who cares. It doesn't affect you and if you don't support them because they have fridges in their room then you need to re-evaluate your life.

The Corps is not trying to make super soldiers, it's trying to make leaders of character.
Earning things builds character. That's the point.

Back to topic. Can fish have microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker?

Thats a smart retort...... because now when I go to Starbucks I think back to when I had to earn a coffee maker.... yeah right.

If it helps the cadets perform at a higher level then I'm all for it. For example hydration packs, my guess is that they were implemented due to safety reasons with exercising in the Texas heat but it also helps cadets run or workout longer which in turn helps them improve. If protein shakes or whatever helps you in the weight room or on runs then I'm all for it. If a coffee maker helps you study better then I'm all for it.

Seems like the biggest issue is trying to maintain tradition in changing times---I get it. Maybe a compromise where the coffee maker/frig/microwave is in a community area on the floor and upperclassmen can have them in their rooms.

1983-87; radiators provided cooling and/or heating in dorms (you couldn't have both AC & Heat with radiators).

Heat was on from November 1 to Spring Break and AC was on from Spring Break to November 1; this also was the cycle for uniforms, summers worn from spring break to November 1, and the Winters from November 1 to Spring Break.

Radiators continued to be in place through Spring 1990. We only had fan speed, no temperature control. Only thing which made it even more undesirable was the excessive amount of tobacco spit which coated the radiators. Made the fish holes smell like humidors.

So having lived on the quad and also in Marine barracks makes me unqualified to express my opinion? Got word today that the Marine ROTC wanted to give the fish coffee pot privileges because they were drinking too many energy drinks to stay awake and wanted to give them a healthy alternative.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

When I was a fish in'79 we did not earn internet privileges until 10 years after graduation.

Why doesn't the Trigon stock the dorms with Rip-It's?

In all seriousness I don't mind the coffee pot. They can be kept under the sink and only allowed at certain times. I say hell no to microwaves and fridges. They should definitely be earned. As far as nutritious chow goes isn't Duncan good enough? fish should PTing enough to let them eat anything they want and still be in great shape.

The days of looking forward to a PlayStation or a TV in your room butt year are gone. fish get that just with their laptops. I remember downloading off of Napster and quietly listening in my hole fish year and hoping like hell no one would pop in. Getting music and carpet pisshead year felt great. Gotta give them something to work for and look forward to. If they want an easy experience join ROTC at SHSU or UH.

Sounds like you weren't doing it right.
In Fall '88 you could chat chicks up on the VAX as long as you knew their initials and last 4.

If my Internet Kung-Fu was better, who knows, I might have been able to turn one of those VT220 sessions into a long distance romance with chicks at other schools.

Napster. You're killing me. I remember trying to position the antenna to my clock radio just right in hopes that maybe if the weather conditions were favorable, I could drag in Rock 101 KLOL instead of the readily available Country Music.

This was exactly the Sony Clock Radio I had. My ol' lady called it "The Time Bomb" because it made a loud tick every second.

Aggie Mom:

It's going to be okay. Let the pissheads and white belts worry about fish privileges. Your fish basically has 2 objectives this semester: earning Corps Brass and making really good grades.

You can reach out to General Ramirez if you feel your fish is being unnecessarily pampered.

Bingo! Although I think she has an upperclassmen.

I think her heart is in the best interest of the Corps. Anyone visiting these boards might believe that the fish are responsible for all the changes overnight. Or some, probably the most part, witness the Corps as a long slow decay and others, such as myself, see it simply as the changing of times. I'm sure every decisions was made in the best interest of the Corps, at that time, or as a result of a rules change.

One thing for sure is that we have Commandant that actually listens to the opinions off these boards---so long as they are done in a respectable and professional manner. In the past you'd pretty much have to be a member of the Trigon or a million dollar donor to have the Commandants ear.

If we truly loved the Corps and care about its future we would take advantage of this opportunity and provide meaningful feedback instead of the typical rumor based bashing. None of the fish today are responsible for today's climate. If anything its our fault.

Agreed. Nowhere on this thread have I voiced an opinion on whether fish should have a microwave, fridge, coffeepot, etc.

I didn't care for OP shotgunning a "what the hell is wrong with the Corps" post. And when I questioned OP, she immediately labeled my reply as a sexist comment, that I questioned the post because she is a Mom. That was bull*****

My Dad was in the Corps, I was, and my son finished his four years on the quad a couple of years ago. When I was in, I quickly disliked those former cadets -- young and old -- who constantly complained about the current Corps. All they did was ***** about how dumb things were, "back when I was in ..." etc. And you know what? We had a pretty damn good group in the 80's.

My Dad told me early on he was not going to belittle my year group. It was definitely different in the 80's vs '49. Certainly he had an opinion but he thought the quad had outstanding men and women on it and it was producing great leaders for the world. That was what was important to him.

You think there aren't vast, striking differences today from the early 80's? Hell yes. But, my son's era, just like mine, and just like my Dad's, produced great leaders for this world -- ones who will lean upon their Corps experience to make this world a better place -- DESPITE THE CHANGES. And quite honestly, I'm glad some of the stuff we did and we endured then is gone.

Yep, I have opinions about the Corps. But, even if I disagree with some, I have to trust the leadership in place -- from the Commandant, Trigon staff, to the upperclassmen, to make decisions in the best interests of the cadet, the student, the Corps, and Texas A&M.

The product is still second to none. Grades are outstanding, incredibly sharp men and women are being commissioned into the military, Business, industry, government organizations are receiving phenomenal talent out of the Corps of Cadets. I was impressed with my Dad's generation, my group, and I'm still impressed with my son's era.

I think parents, whether an "...old CT or BQ," or a Dad or Mom, should stay out of what privileges fish should or shouldn't have.

And by the way, OP's accusatory blast is still unsubstantiated.

Even though this has been a somewhat interesting and amusing thread, I can quell the rumor by saying that fish will NOT be getting refrigerators, microwaves, or coffee pots.

I know a LOT of rumors originate on the Quad (some things never change), but this is yet another one that is NOT true.

Plush shag carpet and a lava lamp in all rooms, however.....

Thanks for your love and support of our Corps. Beat the Hell Outta Alabama!!

Never said anyone was sexist but maybe you could read my mind across the internet.

In '61 there was no A/C and it was a phead privilege to even have a fan.
four legs of chair on floor for study from 1900-2230 school nights - no study laying in bed.
It was OK to open window, and when in room door had to be open so room/cadet available for inspection - and to get a cross breeze.
No record players
No radios
No cars
