Makes sense.

The maintenance costs were probably too high so we'll go in and fix things up for free until some future administration decides to give it back to them.

Taliban is itching to normalize relations between them as the lawful Afgnan government and the US.

Peace offering to operate against Iran?

Fake news, but Iran was fighting the Taliban since before 9/11. I suspect the Taliban remembers. This would be one of the only plausible reasons I can think of.

That being said, I can't imagine it would be easy to take over the base. We'd have to put thousands of troops on the ground for security, in what would likely be a multi-billion dollar operation, with a high risk of failure and taking casualties.

But other than Iran, keeping China out of Afghanistan and letting China get easy access to the minerals in Afghanistan would be another possible reason.
