My suggestion start small and build up over time. Don't go out and drop thousands on a bunch of prized bottles and collectables that you may not be able to fully enjoy right now.

I would personally recommend picking up the basic bottles from all of the major distillers to get a small inkling on their flavor profiles and definitely recommend bottle shares or a bar to try out some better pours.

Stuff that is either cheap or available in a 50ml bottle that are good stuff to taste that you haven't mentioned are:

4 Roses Small Batch Select
Jack Daniels Single Barrel
Old Forester 100
Woodford Reserve

Also don't be afraid to try American Single Malts or Ryes. You may prefer them.

There's an amazing amount of good stuff sitting on the shelves without breaking the bank.

I drink a ridiculous amount of Old Forrester Rye and Benchmark Full Proof in mixed drinks. They're cheap, decent and always available. I also have a lot of more expensive bottles that I barely touch.

The absolute best thing to do is to get a mix of same proof/type from different distillery at different price pointsand try them blind. You'll quickly discover what you enjoy the most. Even better if its an affordable and readily available bottle.

Otherwise, find a smaller store with a good selection and become a regular. My rule of thumb is after I figure out who the owner is everything I go in I buy something. Does it have to be bourbon? No, but just be a loyal customer. I make a lot of rum cocktails so there's always something I need.

But blind tasting will really help you discover what you like. Even better if you can get 4-5 others to participate..

I love this advice - thanks to all. I have no problem going slow and steady, and building from a taste profile I prefer. Sounds like it is a more economical way to do it.

I guess I was approaching it the way I have done wine over the last 12-15 years. But if I think about it, I started with wine the same way you are all suggesting with bourbon. Makes a ton of sense.

Some at Spec's, and some at Total Wine. The HH19 was from Total Wine, the Rare Character and Old Forester President's Choice was from Spec's.

For some reason the Instagram won't imbed, but here is the blind tasting I did of the two Texags Still Austin Rye bottles!

Both were excellent and I'm excited to compare against Nancy's October pick when I visit my parents for Thanksgiving.

Wanted to share in this thread in case anyone else was interested in the Solo Blind. Here is the link for the Solo Blind, I recommend getting with the all black glencairns. They restock monthly so just get on their mailing list for the head's up.

I put the 120 just ahead of the 118, but multiple other ags I talked to agree with you. Love the tasting notes, etc

I plan on cleaning up the Buffalo Trace and keeping it as is. I'm going to make a bourbon cabinet out of the other one.
