Yeah this is one I may actually want to start hunting for. Every one I've had has been great.

Unicorn Auctions is a pretty good spot for MWND. Recent Acts usually sell for $75 which ends up being $120 when you factor in fees and shipping. No clue why it's below MSRP there but it's a good option and I've never had issues with them when I've bought other bottles.

Looks like I have a Russell's Reserve 13 Year waiting on me. Still haven't opened up the 15 year that I got a couple of years ago.

You're missing out on the 15 then, it's easily in my top 3 bottles I've ever tasted

I got an RR13 on the TW lottery, and picked up a Weller CYPB from the Specs vault. Also got a Stagg from the TW drop today. They also had some Fortaleza, but I could only have one.

All the BCS specs had Stagg, Blantons and Eagle Rare. I heard some had Weller 12 and Hancock Reserve but the Rock Prairie did not

Saw this post and went to check email registered with Specs vault. Saw the Vault email and got excited until it was a Michters Sour Mash Toasted Barrel.

But I wanted to say thanks for mentioning the vault. I forget to check all the time..

Those are going for $300-400 online after a quickie check, that may be a pretty good bottle!

In Houston, lately it seems a lot of Specs have Eagle Rare and Blantons available. Not on the shelves, but have to ask for it. Make sure you ask and don't expect it to be sitting on the shelves.

I want to dive into this thread over the weekend, but I was wondering if you could help me build a bourbon collection.

Context - I recently finished my basement and have some money earmarked for buying bourbon (and wine) both for everyday drinking, but also for collecting/hunting/displaying bottles that will be more special occasion pours. Money came from a small inheritance and this was something we enjoyed together, so I thought this would be a good way to honor a memory in building, collecting, and enjoying good bourbon.

I could use Grok or ChatGPT (and will), but there's something about community that will always trump AI.

So, if you had to start over, where would you start? Essentials, hidden gems I should look for? Budget is open at this point, but willing to explore all price ranges. I am also going to hop on the trading thread for those of you willing to ship to CO.

Appreciate it!

This is incredibly tough to answer because everyone has different tastes. For some daily drivers I'd probably go with stuff like Wild Turkey 101, Old Grandad 7 Year, 1792 Sweet Wheat or FP, Buffalo Trace, JD Barrel Proof, or Old Forester products (I like 1910 and 1920). They're all crowd pleasers and something everyone would enjoy. Also, some really good rye's out there if that's your thing. Willet four-year rye slaps.

I think it's always worth exploring store picks, too. 4 Roses Barrel Proofs, 1792, Elijah Craig Private Barrels, Frey Ranch, Russels Reserves, High West finished and cask strength whiskies have always been good to me.

The opinion of "special occasion" will vary by drinker and budget. But I think, depending on the individual, that can range on a scale of Weller 107 to BTACs and Pappys. But the general "high-end" stuff? Purple Tops, Weller Full Proof, EHT Barrel Proof, 4 Roses SB Limited Edition, Stagg, Russels Reserve 13/15/Camp Nelson, the list goes on.

There are also some really great NDPs out there. Binders Stash and River Roots both put out some great products. Found North (out of Canada) distills some great whiskeys, and I like their lottery system.

I would highly recommend joining a whiskey club if you can. Go to some meet ups and bottle shares, try a bunch of things before you start buying.

It's really easy to buy all the things trying to figure out what you like. And expensive.

Some of the very best stuff I have had (or at least actually opened) and really enjoyed are store picks. I will say that getting out, trading, buying and selling with others around my area is what's led me to a lot of these. Being active in a local community of fellow whiskey enthusiasts really helps you find some awesome juice and make some good friends along the way to enjoy it with.

I am partial to just about anything Jack daniels makes and the majority of their special releases come out in good quantities and are well price. Same goes for a lot of these makers mark releases that aren't there standard shelfers. A lot of great whiskey without breaking the bank.

I probably should have included what we have enjoyed in the past. /sorry about that.

Last night I was drinking Evan Williams Single Barrel and enjoyed it. I have enjoyed Buffalo Trace, Makeer's Mark (both the standard and the 46, and have a bottle of their Fireside Spice I haven't opened yet), and several of the Elijah Craigs I have had previously.

These are great suggestions so far, especially the idea about getting out and meeting like minded folks - I guess that's the in person version of this thread.

I've met guys who have friends up on a whiskey club in Michigan that did a pick of a Walleye Run Malted rye that it was a long string of connections that led me to and I think I started with a Facebook group I was in. You'll be amazed how much good stuff you'll find and how many people you'll meet that are willing to share great pours. Not everyone is out for max bourbon profitz!

The higher end stuff you'll either need to spend a ton at a store to earn some reward points or make a good relationship with a mom and pop place. I am lazy so I prefer to try things I think I will want to have on my shelf at a bar or restaurant then search it out on secondary instead of going out on the hunt or buying a bunch of stuff I don't want.

In terms of brands that have special releases that really don't miss, Wild Turkey, Heaven hill and Jack daniels stuff is almost always enjoyable to me. I'd say Heaven hill does a few more things that wind up as a big swing and miss but generally I've enjoyed all of those.
