Took a 1995 Lynch Bages to dinner tonight. Pop and pour. Unexpectedly it started off with primary fruits and then developed into a more mature tasting BDX as the night went on. Enjoyable wine.

What's everyone opening for Valentine's? I'm thinking Pinot noir for us. Maybe anArista.

Probably champagne. Or Yquem.

Nothing fancy. We're not big on V-day, and I'm doing steak and potatoes for dinner tomorrow night. So probably some kind of Paso red. Saturday night is a Paso Robles G2 vineyard dinner, so that should be fun.

Last Bottle Mystery Bottle, thinking its Lail Vineyards BLUEPRINT CABERNET SAUVIGNON VINTAGE 2021

https://www.lailvineyards.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Lail-2021-Blueprint-Cabernet-Sauvignon-Wine-Profile-with-reviews-Nov-2023.pdf

Any experience with Lail? Its not a particularly significant discount of retail price.

Milestone birthday coming up (50). I cant decide which of these to open.

2016 Smith Haut Lafitte
2017 Moonracer
2018 Opus One
2018 Roger Sabon Chteauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret des Sabon
2019 001

The Moonracer and Opus are the only bottles I have, I do have multiples of the others. In addition I have various vintages of Mascot & Detert (Cab Franc & Oakville) and various Boudreaux's and Chianti's that I bought on trips to Europe that I will hang onto for sentimental reasons (the Smith Haut Lafitte being one of them, but I have a case). Part of me wants to open the 001 to help me determine if I am going to continue to buy it (I purchased the 1st three vintages so far). I feel like I should hang onto the Opus One and Moonracer a bit longer, although I am not one with a lot of patience.

Which of these would you open? Or maybe the better question is, which of these will be better to open now given the relatively young ages?

For a big one, 50, I'd probably be opening 2+ of those over the course of a few days!

Here's an idea though, if you can find the same or similar CdP and other of those wine types across one newer and one older vintage, at a cheaper price point, you can try to see if you gravitate towards one end of the age or the other. Winebid may be an option to grab some of these cheaper bottles to test with. Fun problem to have this choice!

Going with a big boy 2016 Darius II tonight with equally big boy ribeye and baked potato. Back when napa cabs were my preferred style I managed a vertical from 2013-2019 (excl '17 which they didn't make), but I have gone much more old world in my preferred style these days.

I think '18 and '19 vintages of Napa are going to be better wines. Just open them up early in the day!

IMO, Opus One will be open for biz. I would give the others more time.

Crazy idea - there are places that have older vintages that you could splurge on. Look on wine searcher and have it set to allow shipping to your state. You can then just search bottles to your hearts delights. You'll regularly find back vintages cheaper than current.

This is in a really good spot right now. Tannins have calmed down, and fruit is very much present. Had it tonight with sirloin, spinach, and pommes aligot.

I second the winebid or winesearcher recommendation in regards to sourcing some older vintage stuff.

Also, I stuck to my original thoughts and went with this Arista Pinot for today. A delicious wine.

Dinner with a friend for his 50th so we took a 2004 Krug and a 2015 SQN Syrah. I've said this before and I'll say it again. I love 20+ year old champagne and this one was pretty damn delicious.

Some wines from a fun day in Napa:

Started off at Realm. Tasted the below as well as a 2010 To Kalon and a 2013 Farella from a mag.

Took this one to lunch…a yet to be released Pinot from Will:

We then stopped off at Schramsberg for a tasting but I had hit my limit for the day so only had one taste. The wines are not really my style but I had a good time.

And then dinner at Bistro Jeanty (I also ran into an old friend there which was a nice surprise):

More tomorrow…

Yesterday was another great day in Napa. After a fantastic breakfast at Ad Hoc (complete with fried chicken) we drove over to Macdonald and went for a walk around the vineyards with their new dog. About 3 minutes into the walk, we turn around to find WestU Ag and his wife stalking us down the path!!!! How awesome is that? Another nice surprise of seeing friends on this trip. We all tasted the 2022 MacD before they had to leave to catch a flight. Delicious as always, even with only a 5 hour decant. Unfortunately the West U's left too soon because, as is the tradition at the Macdonald cottage, the Yquem cork got popped. Don't worry West U, I have some more Yquem for the next time we see y'all.

We spent the rest of the afternoon hanging at an old friend's house who I had unexpectedly seen the night before walking by at dinner. Not much wine related talk there, just us and the wives catching up and telling National Park and machine gun stories.

The last adventure on this trip was dinner and Bouchon with a 2015 Maybach. Delicious stuff. and that onion soup…I mean wow.
