Anyone been to Frank Pepe's or Sally's? I'm flying to New Hampshire to pick up a vehicle, and I'm gonna stop in New Haven to get one of these legendary pies. Anyone have a preference? I'm leaning Sally's right now, and I'm basing that off of Portnoy's 9.2 score.

Lived in CT for about 4 years. I prefer Pepe but they are both really good. If you are around Connecticut for more than a day, find a Colony Grill too!

If you like seafood, get the bacon and clam pie at Pepe.

Yeah I'm sure they tasted good, but what's the deal with like 4 inches of crust with no toppings?

Also, i get a bit of char, but looks like it got burned to me.

It's some of the most highly rated pizza on the planet. Apizza is very much its own style, but don't knock something you haven't tried, or demean others who actually have tried it and loved it.

I think pizza chains created this expectation that all pies should be $9. It's like saying why should I pay to go to The Republic when Outback also has steak.

You can't photograph the quality of ingredients (especially with an iPhone). Frank flies to Italy every year to choose the tomatoes that go on his pies. The char on the crust adds a texture and flavor that I can't describe. It's not like that across the entire bottom. There is a very thin crisp, but there's enough stretch to fold a slice in half. The two big things are the heat at which it is cooked and the quality of ingredients.

EDIT: If you're really interested, check out Netflix's 'Ugly Delicious' Season 1 Episode 1. They discuss pizza and Frank is in that episode.

I've been to both and love them both.

Not ashamed to admit that I went to Sally's after doing a full seafood dinner along the water, and ordering a full pie for myself.
