I tried to be nice in my last post on tomato sandwiches. Y'all have the right to add all that junk to your tomato sandwiches but there's only one way to eat a Southern Tomato Sandwich.

And you gotta have Dukes.

Seems the way to eat one would be add bacon, and chicken, and remove the tomato.

Eat what you like, but a tomato sandwich sounds terrible.

I had two sliced tomatoes for lunch.

Interesting. Seems like it would be bland. Though a good tomato can be tasty. Mom's mostly vegetarian. Maybe I'll make some the next time she's over.

Slice of bread, smother it with mayo, add slices of homegrown tomatoes (store bought don't even compare), cover with salt and pepper. Delicious.

I can get behind it. A fresh, vine ripened tomato with salt and pepper on mayo'd toast is delicious.

People that don't like fresh tomatoes probably vote for Biden.

Are you unemployed? Because that is the only reason I could imagine anyone ever eating a tomato sandwich.

Apparently the photo of the tomato sandwich is considered food porn inappropriate for public viewing.

The tomato sandwich is a Deep South thing, I think. My grandparents on my mom's side lived in rural Virginia, in a house on the coast of the York River, which feeds into the Chesapeake. We would spend a few weeks there every summer. One of my memories is going out on the river with my grandfather to pull crab traps, and then eating lots and lots of crab cakes. Another was tomato sandwiches, with tomatoes grown in my grandmother's garden. Toasted bread, tomato, mayo, lettuce. The whole point was self sufficiency, eating what you can grow/catch yourself. They were raised in the Depression, which I assume impacted how they lived.

Tomato sandwiches are fine, but yeah, now I think bacon makes them better. Because I'm spoiled.

I miss my tomato beds. Had no idea I'd enjoy growing them so much.

So anything tomato is good with me.

Dub, yes dirt poor and unemployed. I'm positive that's the only kind of people eating tomato sandwiches. That must be what you're thinking. Right?

Or they're true Southerners and it doesn't seem like there's many of us left.

Dayum, why'd you have to go and mention crab cakes

While I've never had one, nor wanted one, I can imagine a perfectly ripe tomato combined with some salt and pepper and mayo would be pretty good.

I picked up my recipe for them from Turkey and the Wolf in New Orleans.
Butter up and toast two pieces of Texas toast on the griddle.
Decent amount of mayo on both pieces.
Salt and pepper the tomato slices
Throw about a quarter cup of salted sunflower seeds on one piece of bread, then the tomatoes, then top with a bunch (more than you think you need) of fresh basil and dill.
Squeeze out about half a lemon over the top of all of it. Top with the other piece of bread. Pretty damn good.

I also just ate one, but mine also had crispy bacon and sauteed shrimp on it.

I've always loved tomatoes!

Growing up, my grandfather had a big garden of tomatoes. Every night for supper my grandmother always served fresh sliced tomatoes, no matter what the main course was.

We have a pretty big garden on the ranch. My grandmother's Tomato sandwich is homegrown tomatoes, cream cheese on lightly toasted bread.

If they are homegrown it is a fantastic light meal. Little salty and pepper and life is good.

I like the part where you added balsamic vinegar and pine nuts, two of the most expensive ingredients in the whole store, to a sandwich designed to save money.

I'm also not sure why people need to add acid to fresh homegrown tomatoes. They generally have enough acid already. But to each their own I guess.

Frank everyone of those sandwiches mentioned above sound great but you can't call it a Tomato Sandwich unless you have Homegrown Tomatoes, Salt, Pepper, Mayo, Bread

Happy 4th y'all! Just came in for brats, potato salad, sliced tomatoes , and best.pintos.ever. Heading back to fish right after lunch. We have a Tomato Windfall this year…again !

When the Lord made the avocado culinary perfection had been reached but then he outdid it with cilantro....imho

i didn't realize we were saving money but look if you really want to save money the mayonnaise sandwich is undisputedly cheaper and just as good. i ate plenty of those growing up. on good nights we ate creamed tuna sandwiches and those were also solid

I grew up eating hotdogs wrapped in cheese and bacon then baked (you may think good, but I hated) and fried spam on good nights. I vowed I'd make enough money to never feed my kids that ***** They're 5 and 6 and so far we have been ok.

PS: I live in Northlake and apparently there's a Denton Farmer's Market and I'm going to get me some damn tomatoes and I'm going to make this sandwich! Actually looks great to me, but a really good tomato is incredible by itself.

I had my first tomato sandwich with my husband's grandmother. I thought it was an odd sandwich, but I tried it. It was delicious. White bread, mayonnaise, tomato, salt & pepper.
