I do believe Buzz has reached his ceiling, and he's just not good enough of a game manager to advance further than S16, absent an absolutely loaded roster. He had a good roster, with uber experience and zero major conflicts, and he could do no better than a 9point win over an average team.

He's a good man and a good coach, who can produce good teams. If that is enough for the powers that be, so be it. I for one would rather keep trying for greatness, the way the 'sips are doing without Barnes. One of these times, they'll hit, and we'll be asking the same ol' question, "why not us?"

Unfortunately, that is a controversial take with many on here.

I'm not looking for a guy with great empathy for his players.
I'm looking for a guy with great empathy for his players AND can win.

VALUE is what we are not getting.
He's getting paid to win a LOT of games and perform well in the tourney.
That doesn't mean he has to win a natty every few years.
But it does mean 2 wins in 6 seasons with consistent under performance is not the result you should accept based on the money he's paid.

This forum is loaded with people who think we are running a spiritual camp that happens to convene on a basketball court and that close counts.
If you want to settle for that 2 wins in the dance in 6 seasons, with a team that is undisciplined in shot selection and is burdened with poor coaching/time management in the final minutes of close games and a repetitive history of late season implosions and will pay him top tier dollars for years of that performance, then you have your guy.

Is it two wins in the Dance in 6 seasons or two wins in two seasons? Most people would say that the most recent results are more relevant. Seems to speak to a lack of objectivity, even moreso when you're including Covid years.

I'll say it again. We have a 5-5 record against this season's Sweet 16. Firing Buzz is just insane.

It would be borderline insane to even want to if it didn't cost us anything. To think we should pay $15M to do it is a thought that nobody who lives in reality should think.

Insane? No. I would agree with "unrealistic" this year.

41 Distinct teams have played in the sweet 16 since Buzz was hired here, including 9 SEC teams.

Even if the goal really was to "make the sweet sixteen every now and then" it would still be dumb to dismiss a coach who made the tournament 3 years in a row. Who went to overtime and was competitive in the elimination game that gets you to that goal in both of the most recent two seasons, and also has already achieved the stated goal at two other programs prior. The impression I get is that some people are just willing to trade Buzz Williams for Mark Fox on just a hope and a prayer of hitting 00 on the roulette wheel to try for Nate Oats

Your thinking is precisely why there is no upward movement in our program.

It's not that 5-5 is a crappy result, it's that 5-5 should have and could have been better without Buzz's annual late season implosion, his inability to coach an offense particularly in the final 3 or 4 minutes of a close game and the repetitive doze-offs in the final seconds of games where coaching out of timeout or should have been a timeout is the reason we aren't 7-3 rather than 5-5. An inexplicable offense that he can't seem to refine, a continuously undisciplined shot selection plague that he can't seem to coach certain players out of and a well established history of not being able to recruit well ... those are reasons to look elsewhere.

Bottom line we pay him a great salary to coach and he doesn't get it done at a level to justify the dollars. Poor value for our athletic department dollar.

But in true TAMU tradition, we will always be looking to and talk of "next year". How many people here defended Melvin Watkins for YEARS before realizing he was not going to get better and ditto for Barone.

So one Sweet 16 in the last 10 years and even that was 6 years ago.... and he's getting paid how much ? I don't think it's crazy to ask him to be 6 years into this program and have us on the trajectory to be a consistent 2nd weekend team and finish at the top of our conference. But instead have won nothing and we're also in rebuild mode..

Also it's funny that you're arguing that Buzz's tournament success is the reason he's good and the very next guy is sayings its a crap shoot and success can't be based on tournament results, so not winning shouldn't be held against him... Y'all want to have it both ways.

Whatever I need to unplug from Aggie sports for a while. Y'all drive me insane.

It's a good time to unplug. The baseball team hits like garbage, and the only positive news is on NIL transfer players doing NFL workouts and success in the non-revenue sports. If only we had expectations of success like Alabama, Florida, and Auburn.

Okay, let's say you're right, then what? What do you want people to do? What's the action item for the "Yall shouldn't be happy with this season" crowd?

Just whine and moan on the message board?

People would rather make a move just to curb their emotions rather than actually be logical about things

You're insane if you think we can and should fire Buzz. It's not really a debate either

Cool. Happy for the players. I'd rather have a coach that wins at a higher level. I do believe this is genuine from Buzz, but if it wasn't for this stuff he'd have been fired by now.
Lol, this is the kind of ridiculous stuff that I refuse to believe anyone actually thinks.

At absolutely no point has Buzz been in any danger of being fired.

Yep

Guy has 3 straight tournament appearances (should be 4) at a school that now only has 17 appearances in it's entire history and doesn't support the sport at a high level

Cherry picking stats a bit here.

17 times in its entier history yes but 11 of those are in the past 20 years.

Doesn't change the fact that we don't have a good basketball history. We've also never advanced past the seeet 16.

If people want buzz gone they are entitled to their opinions, but careful what they wish for as we can very easily go back to pre BCG days, especially in a league as tough as the sec

With buzz you know he can make it work with less than ideal pieces so the floor is much higher

This isn't Texas State. We have 100s of millions of dollars coming into this athletic program. Excuse the alumni for having expectations for something better than the round of 32.

There are a lot of opinions. I get both sides of the argument. I really like Buzz. I said that. Let me pose a question. Let's say you want Buzz gone. Who do you realistically go hire? I think that's a legitimate question. Trev won't hire Beard in my opinion. There is baggage there. Aside from him, who?

Buzz Williams has established a great culture for this basketball program. Hopefully, he can eventually get us to at least a Sweet 16 appearance and continue coaching at Texas A&M for the rest of his career.
