What about Drew Valentine? He's a name I've seen a lot of guys think is going to get a shot at a big time program someday.

He's really young at 33 but that just means he's got a lot more untapped potential

Just not sure at that age if he's ready for the big leagues yet

Scheyer was 34. Not saying he's the next Scheyer but guys like Greg Kampe and Izzo have spoken highly of him before. We just talk about wanting a young hungry guy and he's a legit coach.

Age has proven to be a lot less of a factor across professional sports for coaches than once thought. Sean McVay won the Super Bowl at 36.

Yeah, not saying he can't coach, but the sec is currently the toughest league in the land and if you're not really ready for it you'll get swallowed up whole
There's a lot of coaching sharks in this league

Golden wasn't viewed as a shark before he was hired and he was 36 when he got the Florida job. My thought is if you can coach you can coach anywhere and he's got 61% winning percentage in one of the tougher mid major conferences out there in the A10.

I would place more emphasis on winning coaches / cultures he's been involved with than age alone. I felt the same with the football hire, early 30s candidate from Texas that had learned under two guys, Saban and Smart and was the first guy Smart called when he left for UGa. We passed of course and, after getting burned in baseball, Trev will think long and hard about a repeat.

He played for Gregg Kampe back at Oakland, then served as a grad assistant under Izzo while his brother was on the team and went to a Final Four in 15, after that season became the youngest assistant hired by Kampe. In 17 he went to Loyola where he was in charge of their defense and went to the Final Four that year. I understand we don't want Moser but you can't deny that they had good teams when they were at Loyola together and when Moser left for OU Valentine got tapped for the gig. He's won a regular season title, a conference tournament championship, and has finished in the top 3 most of his years as the head coach of both conferences.

He's not my ideal candidate because he hasn't spent much time at high level programs which I think is important but he's in that next tier of guys after that.

Absolutely a fair take! Just have been seeing a lot of love for Huss, warranted for sure, and thought Valentine was a solid name due to being a head coach longer and in a tough league than the Big South.

Yeah at least Huss worked at Creighton, but that's why he's not as high for me as Lutz either.

He's not young but I think he's an up and comer that's paid his dues. He's learned under multiple great coaches, he's had to build three different coaching staffs and rosters in this new free player movement area, one of them at a high-major program.

Those are all things I like in a coach and I think would set him up well here. He likely has a huge network to call on to build a good staff because he's been around too.

Yeah, I'm just saying he has to be ready for it

If you interview him and he comes off as up to the task and create then by all means go for it

But you'd better feel very confident about it

Age ain't nothing but a number.

Impressive list of whose who in bb caoching at a younger age.

But the list doesn't show many young coaches washed out at a young age over the period of time.

You're right. There have been plenty of washout.

But, its pretty impressive that at least half of what most consider the top 25 coaches got their big jobs when they below 45, most in their early to mid 30s.

All im saying is one shouldnt be discounted because of age.

I would take Lutz.

I would take Huss.

Lutz being the more conservative and more proven coach. He has asst coached under some really great HCs and hoops programs.

At this point, go for the up and comer. Do not get in a bidding war for an unproven or mediocre coach from another SEC school.

Does Moser really suck? Like, really?

If OU's situation with NIL and player development facilities is pretty rough (i've got no idea how ours compare), i'd think most anyone would struggle there, no?
Doesn't a guy like Moser perform better when he can attract better players?

Somewhat weak? Is it the final 4 team, the 2 elite 8 teams or the 4 sweet 16 teams that made them somewhat weak?

Wrt to Lutz, that program has been left for dead and Boone isn't around to spend money. They're in a bad way during this current era.

It's his first year? I know everyone thinks now you can conjure a team out of the portal and start ballin right away but you need money, you need staff, etc. and then you're trying to build an entire culture from scratch.

In this era of bringing half your roster and your recruiting class with you it can be easy for some coaches to make that transition, especially going from power job to power job or a really good mid major to a low end power job but if you're making a big jump it can also make it harder because the people that were on that team probably all left and your guys might not be good enough.
