I honestly don't hate that he's at NABC. At this point he has to get the right hire and you can't rush these things. We will still be able to get portal guys because a) the portal has only been open a week and b) it's not like we have a team that was one out away from a natty and the portal is closing in 2 days. If it gets to end of next week and we still haven't made a hire then is the time to start worrying/panicking.

I hope that's where he is because yeah, we need to get this right and hopefully he's engaging people outside of the search just to see what they think we should do. It doesn't matter how long it takes (within reason) or how many people tell us no. Don't just give up and settle for someone you know will say yes because of pride or whatever.

Looch said in his last big update that Albert's is flying to SA in the morning to attend the NABC convention. If I'm Trev, I understand I'm not, I'm figuring out who the best rising stars are. I'm not chasing whales any longer.

Basically said there's a lot of options similar to him and it would take a big push to get him to leave. They don't want this to drag out too long if there are more moveable options.

The next several days are just gonna be Trev in the hallway of a convention center doing man on the street polls of coaches over which one of like five guys we should hire.

I attended the NABC most every year but didn't go last season. Great time and lots of networking for coaches. It seems like there used to be many more head coaching openings during the NABC/final four. Most of those interviews took place in hotel rooms.

There will still be a lot of assistant coaches moving around and getting new opportunities at the NABC. It's kinda like the assistant coaching portal weekend. Of course our AD has a job in his pocket and should get it done this weekend.

How do we feel about Carrawell? Premo board keeps throwing that name out. You have to think he wants a crack at a HC job sooner rather than later and Scheyer isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Something to kick tires on or pass?

He's not young but I think he's an up and comer that's paid his dues. He's learned under multiple great coaches, he's had to build three different coaching staffs and rosters in this new free player movement area, one of them at a high-major program.

Those are all things I like in a coach and I think would set him up well here. He likely has a huge network to call on to build a good staff because he's been around too.

Now that is solid thinking. I do like that he's been in our situation before and thrived.

Does Moser really suck? Like, really?

If OU's situation with NIL and player development facilities is pretty rough (i've got no idea how ours compare), i'd think most anyone would struggle there, no?
Doesn't a guy like Moser perform better when he can attract better players?
idk, but I'd want someone to know that information rather than make an assumption.

Lutz is a good coach.

I would take Lutz.

I would take Huss.

Lutz being the more conservative and more proven coach. He has asst coached under some really great HCs and hoops programs.

At this point, go for the up and comer. Do not get in a bidding war for an unproven or mediocre coach from another SEC school.
Huss has only 2 years HC experience, and had superior talent on their roster that won their lil conference at least this last season. Source: https://apnews.com/article/march-madness-high-point-f2b08d3348a6d7ba90eeb1e443a4bf59#

Lutz has been head coach for 4 seasons and only has 1 in-conference winning record with a couple .500's. I'd need to know a lot more if I were Trev.

I keep going back to Luke Murray.

I might be wrong- but it looks like he was not only part of UCONN success since 2021 (23-10, 31-8,37-3!!!, and 24-11 - along with all their post-season success including two back-to-back National Championships) BUT - I noticed during my Chris Mack research that Murray appears to ALSO have been a part of OTHER notable success - at Louisville (under Mack) from 2018-2021 (20-14, 24-7, 13-7 - with what would've been back-to-back NCAAT had it not been for COVID), at Xavier from 2015-2018 (again, under Mack) with excellent records (28-6, 24-14, 29-6 - not only getting to the NCAAT each of those years, but WINNING - with first round winning years bracketting an Elite Eight run), and learning to win (under Hurley again) at Rhode Island from 2013-2015 (14-18, 23-10).

He's only 44 years old.

Let's take a risk and give him a shot.

I have told y'all for several days its gonna be Lutz. Do I know anything official? no

I knew we were going hard after Beard but that was always going to be a crapshoot. McCasland was the other high profile guy we were going to take a shot at but we pretty much knew it was a longshot at best. By process of elimination, Lutz will wind up being the last guy standing once you roll through all of the supposed "names."

Do I know anything? No, I am Sgt. Schultz so I know nothing. That said, I consider the him to be the most likely hire -- given our situation. Read into that what you want and however you want. Lutz will be the guy.

If I am wrong, username checks out.

He could prove to be excellent but being a HC is an entirely different job than being an assistant, in my opinion, and I feel A&M is a school that should be looking for those that have proven themselves as a HC. Too much of a dice roll to give someone their first ever HC job - in my opinion. We're bigger than that.

I like this thread and the very idea of hiring a younger coach with a lot of potential. But three issues

1. There's as good a chance of them bombing out as in them succeeding. I can live with that.

2. There's a good probability that, if they succeed, they leave in short order for a "basketball" school. But that's no difference than what usually happens to us. I can live with that too.

3. We will almost assuredly overpay for a retread. Trev may feel burnt by the Earley hire. And just because, well, it's what we almost always do.

Just because Mike Earley is in over his head, doesn't mean all assistants will be in over their head. .i don't know that college baseball was raving about assistant coach Michael Earley. He was given a shot because he could keep an elite roster together.

I'd absolutely take Moser over Bucky. Bucky is the kind of name you float to make people feel better about who you end up with. Moser took a mid-major to a Final Four. Bucky has a couple of years at a low-major, a gimmick offense, no postseason experience to speak of, no coaching connections, and doesn't even have college assistant experience.

I don't think it will be either one, for the record, but Bucky is an objectively bad candidate at this stage of his career.

I just don't see how it could be Moser.

What I think IS true is that he's a natural one to the connect to the job, he's been here before, and that his end probably wants it so I'm sure his agent and his people are trying to make some moves.

Yeah, Moser is the standard case of being an easy name for the media to throw out there for speculation without much substance behind it.

He hasn't attained the level of success at OU that makes me think he could help grow our program. If he is the guy, we are moving down, not even sideways. Besides, we beat OU this year. If this is the choice, I'm disappointed.
