Game Preview
Bucky Ball Bucky Ball Bucky Ball. Are you all in on Bucky Ball. Back to back strong wins away from Reed, a 36 point win over Florida State and an 8 point win over Pitt. Now it's time for a 3rd win over an ACC team. Today at 4am, the Aggies take on SMU in a neutral site game in Arlington. Our last big test in non conference play. A strong test.
SMU is coming off its first loss of the season as they were defeated by Vanderbilt by 19. They did beat Oklahoma State in a scrimmage, but before Vanderbilt played a weak non conference leading up to it. They picked up wins against Tarleton, Corpus Christi, Murray State, Butler, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Arkansas State, Radford, then an overtime win over Mississippi State.
SMU was a bubble team last year who just missed the tourney. They returned a few of their stars and added the conference USA player of the year #5 Jaron Pierre Jr and #3 Corey Washington from Wichita State. Pierre is averaging 17 ppg but the key to their offense is a man by the name of Boopie Miller. The 6 foot guard, #2 is averaging over 20 ppg and 7 apg all while shooting 42% from 3 and 91% from the free throw line. They have 3 other players averaging in double digits, #0 BJ Edwards 13.4, Washington 13.4, and 7'2 Greek center #24 Samet Yigitoglu who's also averaging 8.3 rebounds.
This starting 5 averages about 30 or minutes a game. 3 of them played over 40 minutes against State. Their last two games, they've only played 8 players with their 3 bench players seeing limited time. So similarly to Pitt, we're going to need wear them down or get them into foul trouble. We'll have to key on Miller and try to slow him down or force him into bad shots.
As for us, offensively we've all come to know how much more accurate and productive Ruben Dominguez has been. Now every other team is starting to know. Teams are plastering him and not letting him breathe. We'll have to get him open three's in transition or from off ball screens. OR we can have him cut to the basket as well or find a crossed into the paint. Agee is becoming a force in the paint and his offensive rebounding is becoming a huge factor for us. Last game we had Griffen back. Pop and Mgbako played limited minutes but we are getting healthier and healthier. People are starting to find their roles and our court chemistry continues to progress. This offense is fun to see and I'm excited to watch us play against this SMU team. We're gonna need big performances from our big men as we have to shut down their 7'2 big man.
If you're in the DFW area tomorrow, head on over to Arlington to watch our guys in action! It should be a fun matchup of two great teams. We've won two power 4 games in a row, winning this one will be tough, but would put us in a beautiful spot with 3 easy games left in non conference. Let's go get this win and BTHO smu!
