3-0! Our Fightin' Texas A&M Aggies are sitting undefeated in conference play after wins against LSU, @ Auburn, and Oklahoma. Next up is a huge road game in Knoxville against the Tennessee Volunteers at 6pm tonight.
As many have pointed out, this Tennessee team has plenty of size. They are led in the paint by #34 Felix Okpara, at 6'11 he's one of the best rom protectors in the conference and a solid rebounder. Aside from Okpara, they rotate a group of big men throughout the game regularly all with size. Their leading resounded however is 6'10 Nate Arment who's a projected lottery pick averaging 15 points and 6.4 rebounds. Ament started the year off strong but has given up the leading roll to Maryland transfer Ja'kobi Gillespie who runs the offense at the point guard position. He's averaging 18.3 points and 5.5 assists.
Gillespie is quick and loves to run in transition. With the their size they'll quickly push the ball up to him and he's a finisher at the basket who's not afraid of contact. He's also a good 3 point shooter. In the half court, they like to slow the pace and feed their bigs. Two average just under 10 points in Jaylen Carey and Jp Estrella. We'll need to stay strong near the rim or offer quick and effective back side help. A positive sign is their bigs aren't great at shooting free throws.
As for us, we'll need to play fast and take them out of the game in transition. It's a slightly different Tennessee team than we're used to playing the pst few years. They have some great size and aren't going to love or die by the three like they had in previous years. We're going to have to match their physicality down low. I think this is a game Agee lives for and thrives in. We're gonna need some other guys to step up and hold the paint down. We're also going to have to be disciplined with our help defense or be able to run a zone at times.
Offensively, we're going to be up against one of the stingier defenses in the conference. They are quick up too and have size down low. They will double or trap along the baseline to turn people over. Okpara is a big time shot blocker. This is a game you hope our three's are falling at a very high rate. That will help us stay or control the game. We're gonna need quick decisions quick passes. If we can grab some rebounds, we got to run. I want to see us impose our pace and control the game. It will be a game of runs, let's go silence Knoxville.
The Aggies are rolling, the naysayers are quiet, the pace is electric, hope, faith, momentum, is here. How will we respond? How will we carry these expectations? Two quad 1 road games are on deck against ut and tu. We already took one away at Auburn, it's time to take some more. Vegas, fans, and experts have already penciled in a loss. As my man Jamie Morrison would say, why not us? Let's impose our style, let's create chaos, let's drain some 3's, let's turn them over. I wouldn't count us out if we're down by 20, I'm not counting us out before the game begins. I believe. BTHO ut!!!!
