Us vs them. Good vs evil. Beautiful maroon vs hideous burnt orange. Today at 5pm our Fightin Texas Aggie Basketball team will take on those people in that ugly shade of orange. There's a lot on the line here with both teams right on the bracketology bubble. It'll be the first of two meetings this year and a huge opportunity for the Aggies to grab a huge win, it'll be even sweeter because it's over tu.
The Aggies are headed to austin after suffering a heartbreaking double overtime loss in Knoxville Tuesday night. The Aggies led most of the game behind some great defense and solid three point shooting. Rebounds and missed free throws allowed Tennessee to extend the game to overtime and the Aggie offense froze.
On the other hand, tu is coming off back to back big time wins over Alabama in Tuscaloosa and over undefeated Vanderbilt. They didn't have a strong showing in non conference and began conference play with an overtime loss to Miss State and suffered a beat down against Tennessee. Their season needing a miracle to get back on track, they went and took down Bama and Vandy. 1st year longhorn coach Sean Miller has them rolling. It's up to Bucky Ball to take them back down.
They are led by Xavier transfer #3 Dailyn Swain. He's a 6'8 slasher who loves to attack the rim and get to the free throw line. He averages 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds. He also leads them in assists and steals. They also run a lot of their offense through 7 footer #8 Matas Vokietaitas. He averages over 15 points as well and plays physical and uses his size really well in the paint. He is however prone to fouling and getting fouled. They also still have Tramon Mark. Yes he's still somehow in college. They've leaned on him a lot and he's shown out in conference play. They also brought back Jordan Pope who shares ball handling duties, but is known for his 3 point shot. A player that I think is underrated is Chendall Waever, who's their Swiss Army knife and who's always flying all over the court doing the dirty work.
We'll have to be sound defensively against this well balanced team. They love to attack or feed Vokietaitas. They want to get to the free throw line. We also need to attack him in the paint and get him into foul trouble. Alabama and Vandy both shot a lot of three's against tu. If we can find shots early and sink a good average, I like our chances. It's going to come down to how can we slow them down defensively and if we can disrupt their rhythm. I want to see us use our depth and wear them down. They are rolling and on a super high. We need to turn this into an ugly chaotic game.
On the road at Moody, it will be a wild game. We all saw last year what happened when we went cold and let them go on a run. We'll need to consistently score and we'll need to make our free throws. We can't leave anything in the hands of the refs. I actually like that they're rolling with confidence and I like how we have the opportunity to knock them off of their high horse. With our style we are going to need to suffocate their ball movement and force them into 3 point shots. I want to see us make around 14-15 threes. I want to see who steps up this game.
Starting 3-0 was great for us. We went into Knoxville a double digit underdog and left empty handed knowing we could have won that game. Bucky Ball is special. This team plays extremely hard for each other and for Texas A&M. This rivalry is new to many on this team. Once the ball is tipped off, you can feel the rivalry and how much this game means. It's an opportunity for us to get a big quad 1 win and to stay on the right side of the bubble for awhile. This will be a big game, the biggest game in Bucky's first year at the helm. We're gonna get it done! Let's go saw varsity's horns off and BTHO tu!!!!
