Game Preview
A sensational start to conference play has got us to 6-1. The doubters will say we haven't played anybody or that we will lose our next 3. The same people penciled in at Auburn as a loss, or penciled in at Austin as a loss. When things like schedules are looked at in clusters, it's easy to see a group of games and predict a record. There's one game in front of this team and it's a winnable game. Today at noon we play at Georgia for a big time matchup.
The Aggies are coming off a bye with no mid week game. The Aggies last played Saturday where they blew out South Carolina at home. Georgia is coming off an overtime defeat to Tennessee on Wednesday night. For those that didn't tune in, Georgia down 3 with 11 seconds to go dribbled out the clock and went for an uncontested layup with less than a second to go. A head scratcher to end a huge home game.
One thing in the Aggies favor is that SEC teams have mostly lost on Saturday's after playing Wednesday night games rather than on Tuesday. However, Georgia is a team that plays with a lot of depth. 6 guys play over 20 minutes and 11 guys play over 10 minutes. They will rotate a lot because they love to play extremely up tempo. They want to get out in transition and run, simile to us.
Georgia is led offensively with their guards #5 Jeremiah Wilkinson, #0 Blue Cain, and #4 Smurf Milinder. All take a bunch of threes and love to shoot quick into the shot clock. They average 17, 13, and 12 respectively. Their best offense is when they drive and dish it down low to their bigs or to a wide open 3. They want to attract double teams. They have very highly talented bigs. They have one of the best paint defenders and shot blockers in #2 Somto Cyril. Somto scores about 9.6 ppg, but averages 6 rebounds and almost 3 blocks. However, just like Voiketaitas of tu, he's susceptible to foul trouble. He's also a really bad free throw shooter. Their other big is BYU transfer #6 Kanon Catchings. At 6'9 he can extend the floor and shoot the 3 as well. Smurf is their most accurate 3 point shooter at over 40% while #5 Jeremiah Wilkinson makes the most. They make 9 threes a game.
This game is going to be two similar styles. Georgia will press the full court but not as intensely as us, but they can. Rebounding will be huge, they love to kick it out and run as do we. Transition will be key, but transition defense will decide the winner. Who's quicker at getting back on defense, who's quicker at getting into position or picking up a man.
Georgia has size but we know our leader Agee backs down to no one. We need to get Somto in foul trouble. I feel like if we can push the ball quickly we can find great shots. I think Clemence having his historic game from 3 and Agee making one last game will be huge for today. We can get their bigs out of the paint. I think our guards and wings can attack the basket if we can get their bigs out on the perimeter. I'm not sure if Clemence will have another game like such, but if we can get some three's from him and Agee, even a few a game. It opens up the floor for everyone else! 3's in transition are something we are great at, whether it's Dominguez on a quick catch and shoot, Pop or Lane finding a good look, or kicking it out to Griffen in the quarter. I think this game will have chaotic stretches, two teams that love to run, defend hard, and turn each other over. Who can remain calm under the chaos will win. Although a new team we have veteran players throughout this roster.
We'll see how much the bye affects us. Will we have fresher legs or will our shooting be rusty. Quad 1 games come with little consequence but have huge upside. Having some huge games lined up presents us with some great opportunities. Everyone here talks about these next 5 games or is quick to caution their fellow Ags about getting excited. Well the other teams don't want to see us on our schedule. They don't want to have to guard us for 40 minutes, they don't want to be pressed for 40 minutes. Let's keep playing Bucky Ball like we know how. It's time to go pick up some big wins. Georgia's up next, let's go BTHO georgia!!!!
