It's nowhere but up for LSU at QB now that George Jefferson has hung up his cleats for the thug life. It's scary to think how good LSU could have been last year if they were not just totally, completely, unequivocally incompetent at QB.

Mettenberger didn't redshirt last year. He just couldn't crack the two deep. Im not sure why everybody thinks he a savior.

And this Penn St kid has a 1:2 TD to Int ratio in his short career.

LSU was good enough at QB to go 13-0 last year as SEC Champs. It can definitely get worse!

Mett went into camp with JUCO experience and competed against 2 seniors who have been with the program for 4 and 5 years. Mett is easily better than those two but was new to the system.

I'm taking a wait and see approach. He had spring and fall ball to be better than JJ or Lee and wasn't.

Maybe Les was being overly loyal to JJ, or was taking the safer more known choice.

Mett could be good. But he may not. I'll wait a couple games before I anoint him the next coming of Booty

"easily better" players don't sit on the bench as a 3rd stringer.

OK, I'll rephrase everything. Due to the experience gap between Mett and Jefferson/Lee, they were sort of equal. The coaching staff just went with the ones with the most SEC experience under their belt. As far as capability and potential, Mett is easily better than those other two QB's.

Thanks Coach Miles, big fan here. Love your critical thinking skills and eloquent use of the English language.

Wrong. Was a transfer and had to sit out a year. The ags wanted him also, but knew he could only be around after sitting a year due to NCAA rules.

Wrong. He came from a Juco. He was eligible last year to play. He used a year of eligibility last year

He played last year:

I got to watch Mettenberger at LSUs 2011 spring practice. He is a much better passer than Jefferson or Lee. How he plays on Saturdays is yet to be seen, but Japan is right about him being better than Jeff. or Lee as a passer.

Than Les Miles threw away a NC last year if he benched his best QB
CoachLB

Didn't say he was their best QB. He was their best passer. There is a difference. Mettenberger was the least experienced QB of the bunch. You throw Mettenberger out there against Bama the way they were playing you might have ruined him for this season. Plus, I heard Miles say Mettenberger had injuried his hand in practice before the NC game.

Ok. So we're back to agreeing he couldn't beat out Pick 6 Lee or JJ to crack the 2 deep as a RS Soph that had 8 months in the program to compete for playing time.

Sounds like he's the missing link to LSUs QB problem to me
CoachLB
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Tannehill couldn't beat out JJ either. Maybe Miles was as loyal to his starter as Sherman!
Rusty GCS

Well, Jerrod was preseason Big 12 POY that was injured. And Sherm hanging on to him cost us games against Arkansas and Ok St.

In Mile's case he won an SEC title but did he cost LSU a 3rd Natty in 9 years if he left his best QB on the bench?
CoachLB
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Oh, and LSU was undefeated and SEC Champions. Seems like their QB play must have been OK!
CoachLB

I question Les a lot in the NC game. Lee should have played. But he also said Mettenberger was hurt and not available to play the other day in a interview at the SEC media day. So whether Mettenberger should have played can be dropped.

I went to LSU's Spring Game.

Mett is deadly at 25+ yds

He was good but sometimes shakier underneath.
CoachLB

Their QB play was good enough to win the SEC title and play for the NC. Jefferson was bad in the NC and Lee didn't play. Mettenberger was injuried. Lee should have been given a chance in the NC game. But at what point in an undefeated season do you make the switch to a talented but inexperienced Mettenberger?
Rusty GCS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Well, he switched QBs in Game 6 from Lee to JJ.

My point is Mett was a 3rd year college player that had been in Baton Rouge since December 2010. All the way before LSU played in the Cotton Bowl. If he's as good as LSU fans are saying, he would have won the starting job in August.

LSU fans are talking like they have Peyton Manning on the roster when this kid couldn't sniff PT past year.

He might be better than JJ was, but I have a hard time believing it'll be a lot better. And they'll need him to be because I don't see LSUs D being as opportunistic this year as last year. Hard to create that many turnovers again

And I can make a very compelling argument about the comparisons between Texas 2010 and LSU 2012.

Ass whipped by Bama in title game
Out-going Sr QB to be replaced by overhyped unproven QB
Locker room turmoil

I won't be shocked to see a title game hangover season. It's probably good LSU has a joke of a non-conf sched this year and not the tough one they had last year
JapanLSUfan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Jarrett Lee was the starter up to and including the Bama game. He was rattled in the first quarter and was just tossing the ball up for grabs. That was when JJ stepped in and managed the game to a victory against Bama. He kept the starting job from there on out. When Bama got their second opportunity vs LSU, there wasn't anything that they haven't seen. Neither Jefferson or Lee would've done anything against that Bama D.
It would've been hard for the coaching staff to shelve 2 senior QB's with tons of SEC experience for an up-and-coming JUCO player with potential. Jefferson looked decent against mediocre to bad defenses but he was not a good college QB. Make no mistake about it.

Lee and Jefferson were both game experienced QBs, with a lot of playing time. That switch wasn't a tough transition. I can see we have different opinions and that is OK. What is wrong with LSU feeling they have a real deal QB, they are just excited fans. I am just saying as a coach, Miles would have been crushed if he switched to an inexperienced QB in the middle of an undefeated season, one in which his team made it to the NC game. Believe me, as a coach you don't make that switch when you are winning.
Rusty GCS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I agree with everything you say. I would have done the same.

My point is, Mett isn't who LSU fans think he is.

Coach Stud and Coach Krag will get blasted by the bayou faithful when Mett is an average QB. The thing is, he very well could be an average QB and that's not Krag's or Stud's fault.

Or when Miles makes them run the ball every down to cover up his inabilities. They will scream that he's not being properly used.

I for one am eating my popcorn and waiting on the drama

Average SEC starting caliber QB = championship for LSU. Anything more is icing on the cake. LSU JJ makes Texas A&M JJ look like an all-American.

is mettenberger without a doubt the starter this year?
Rusty GCS

Yes. Boldon (PSU QB) will be the #2 but not challenge for starting role.

Phillip Rivers bro is still a project 7 years later it seems and Jeremy Liggins couldn't qualify.

And I think I'm forgetting another QB that also sucks. But you get the picture.

Never know what this kid can do. He can be a totally different player, with the talent that LSU has.

Arkansas fans are usually very caustic when talking about LSU. This thread gives you a rival's perspective on LSU's QB situation.

http://www.hogville.net/yabbse/index.php?topic=492099.0

Not many outside of LSU fans truly understand how awful our QB situation was for the last 4 years. It sucks to have beasts in every position group except for the one that matters the most where we had two duds taking the snaps.
